ACCREDITATION TO THE CROWN PRINCE COUPLE'S OFFICIAL VISIT TO POLAND

kongehuset.dk

Muhler 05-11-2014 09:37 AM

I think it's time to unlock the Poland thread.

Here is a BT article about M&F going to Poland tomorrow: Kronprinsparret og tre ministre skal sælge Danmark til Polen - Politik | www.bt.dk

M&F will accompany a trade delagtion representing some 60 DK businesses. And no less than three ministers will also go there.

The reason is simple: Poland is now the tenth biggest export market for DK, and goods for some 15 billion DKK are exported to Poland. On top of that Poland's economy has been steadily growing. The export is expected to double by 2020.
Poland is also interested in attracting investments and also to change the reputation Poland has. (I.e. being a source of cheap labour, which cost jobs among the locals in both DK and other countries).

Kronprins Frederik og kronprinsesse Mary rejser til Polen | Billed Bladet

BB article telling that F+M will travel tomorrow morning. It only takes about one hour to fly to Poland from Copenhagen.

They will visit both Warsaw and Szczecin where they among other places will visit a hospital and a kindergarten.

On Wednesday Frederik and Mary are, as we know, celebrating their 10 year anniversary. It's their last day on the tour and the couple will at the end of the day fly back to Denmark. Given that it only takes one hour to fly home there's a good chance they can reach home in time to celebrate thei last part of their day in peace.

Reception onboard the frigate Niels Juel??

That's a museum ship. I didn't even think she was capable of sailing anymore.

Will do some background and return...

Ah, I see.

The modern frigate Niels Juel: http://forsvaret.dk/FKO/Nyt%20og%20P...s/600_iver.JPG (here her sister ship, - in case someone nerdy enough should check the number).

The old Niels Juel from the 1960's is now a museum ship in Copenhagen: http://www.navalhistory.dk/images/Forsiden/Niju9800.jpg Classified as a frigate, she was really a heavy destroyer and designed to fight Polish, Russian and East German warships, which is why I thought it was a little bit odd to send her to Poland...

M&F have arrived in Poland. The show has started: Kronprinsparret er ankommet i Polen | Billed Bladet
Here a pic from BB.
I see it's Marianne Singer who is accompanying them. That means we can expect a 50-50 mix of hard facts and sentimental dose.

During the Cold War Polish marines were expected to land at Køge Bay just south of Copenhagen.

Stand-by I may write some comments.

Notice the Polish officer. Many countries have a peculiar way of saluting and the Polish is very distinct.

Se billederne: Mary og Frederik på polsk | www.bt.dk
The best picture yet of the legendary Polish uhlans.
They are, as you can tell, lancers. When Napoloen first encountered them, he became so excited he recruited a number of regiments (back then known as Polish Lancers), and they distinguished themselves during the Napoleonic Wars.
Being light to medium cavalry issued with lances that outreached any other cavalry weapon, except firearms (and they were hopelessly inaccurate when used form the saddle) they became an extremely feared anti-cavalry weapon.
They were also very useful against infantry squares, once the infantry had fired their muskets and didn't have time to reload. With their lances they could litterally pick off soldiers at the corners of the squares and in that way roll-up an infantry square.

Napoleon made lancers fashionable and soon most major countries in Europe had their own regiments of lancers. In Britain the most famous such regiment, the 17th, "rode into the Valley of Death" at Balaclava. Immortilised by the poem by Tennyson.
Germany or rather Preussia also formed lancer regiments, here known as Uhlans and modelled directly on the Poles, down to the distinctive square headgear.

There had been lancers before the Napoleonic Wars, the most famous being Cossacks, but they were light cavalry and often notorious for poor disclipline, in contrast to the Uhlans.
In countries so far apart as India and Mexico (the Federales) regiments were formed based on Polish Uhlans.

ADDED: Notice the distinctive striped sleeves on three of the uhlans in the picture. They are signalmen and as such wear distictive uniforms, so that their officer can locate them quickly in the confusion of battle.

- That must nerd-fodder enough for now. Time for dinner.

Thanks, Polyesco.

WWII was full of attrocities, but the uprising in Warsaw 1944 must count among the more serious.

In early autumn 1944 Germany was retreating on all fronts and with the Red Army closing in on Warsaw, the Polish Home Army decided it was time to do a Paris. That is liberating their own capital. Thus ensuring that a Polish government would be in place.
So the Resistance came out, armed with all sort of ad hoc weapons, often under the command of Polish officers who had gone underground. (As you know 30.000 Polish officers were liquidated by Stalin in Katyn). And they formed regular military units, complete with markings. (That means they were protected as combattants under the Geneva Convention). They expected to fight a few days until the Red Army reached Warsaw.
The fighting started and initially the Home Army had a considerable success.
But,... but the Red Army stopped. Just short of Warsaw and stayed there.

Sensing the political aim of Stalin, the German forces, spurred on not least by Hitler and Himmler, set about to crush the uprising. Troops poured into Warsaw, also frontline troops who would otherwise face the Red Army.
Even Though the Poles fought desperately they simply didn't have the resources, ammunition, weapons and organisation to hold back the Germans.
The Western Allies pleaded to Stalin to intervene. He refused. It wasn't possible he said. The Red Army needed time to reorganise... and many excuses. Not even fighter cover was provided, so Luftwaffe was free to bomb Warsaw with impunity.
The Western Allies wanted to supply the Home Army from the air, but the bombers were refused permission to land at Soviet controlled airfields, so the bombers could only carry a very limited load, at great risk, and most of what was dropped ended up in German hands.

In the meantime the uprising was being crushed. Now, fighting in cities takes time and cost a lot of resources and the worst of the worst of German units were send in. Penal battalions, the Kaminsky Brigade, the Dirlewanger Battalion, - people who were too psycopatic even for service in concentration camps. The atrocities they commited are too horrible to write about here. It was so bad that senior Waffen SS generals demanded of Himmler that these units being withdrawn. And they were.
By now, the remnants of the Home Army surrended, being promised to be treated as combattants and they were actually to a large degree. Some managed to slip away - but many of those were later rounded up by Stalin's NKVD. Because Stalin was not the least bit interested in an independent Polish government, let alone a Polish army. His own Communist controlled Polish units within the Red Army were destined to take over that role.
With the uprising crushed it was decided by the Nazis to remove Warsaw from the map. Already reduced to rubble, large parts of the capital was blown up.
And now the red Army started to move again.

- This is the story M&F will have heard today at the museum.

Does your day look grey and dark?

Dispair no more, here is a story to cheer you up. From BB: Lille pige vild med kronprinsesse Mary i Polen | Billed Bladet

Today Mary visited a kindergarten for children with autism, The Synapsys Fundation Therapeutic Kindergarten to be exact.
And here Aniela stole the show, she was visibly over-delighted by the visit by Mary.
She jumped around, clapping and giggled: "Ksiezna danii! = Danish Princess".
And when Mary was there, she was laughing and jumping with delight.

Aniela were among those who presented Mary with a wood carving depicting a porcupine complete with flowers made from felt.

So many pictures and great coverage yesterday and today with such a packed program for both F&M there isn't that many pictures?!

Our evening news had coverage from Poland, but their second day is somehow drowned a bit by the media focusing on the couple's 10 year anniversary tomorrow.

Great HQ Pictures from Daily Mail

Day two of royal tour in Poland and the crowd goes wild for Denmark's Crown Princess Mary | Mail Online

tommy100 05-13-2014 08:20 PM

I keep wondering why the sudden interest from the Daily Mail in Mary (and Frederik). I wonder if its been encouraged by the DRF or just that the DM has realized there's more royals out there than just the BRF.

MARG 05-13-2014 08:58 PM

:previous: Well, William and Catherine have not been high profile in UK since before the Australasian tour and Harry is keeping his head down, so they are looking for fillers.

Taking into consideration their royal track record, my somewhat cynical thought is that should Catherine fail to dazzle in the pretty near future, comparisons will be made and it may not be pretty or kind.

The DM recently launched an Australian section of their website. You'll find many reports on Australian celebrities and sports stars known only within Australia because of this. There has been an increase in Mary articles on the DM since then (could be the DM's choice because of the Australian angle, or the DRF PR team chose to utilise the extension into the Australian market).

julliette 05-13-2014 09:31 PM

^^ Interesting information, JessRulz. I was wondering why, from some time now, the DM started to cover pretty much every move of australian model Jessica Hart (everytime she's photographed out and about in NY it's there).

Here's news from today from BB:

Kys og kage til kronprinsparret i Polen | Billed Bladet

There was romance in the air from the morning...

During the reception at the town hall the city government had provided a cake in a wedding-cake style. Frederik and Mary were in high spirits and cut out the cake together after Mary propose: - Shouldn't we cut the cake out as wedding cake? ;)

After the welcome observed the media that Frederik gave his wife a loving kiss.

About the kissing picture - I'll almost bet BB save it to their magazine, but maybe we get it from other media

Well, I don't think the DRF or DK in general has launched a PR offensive in Britain. The readers of Daily Mail will hardly be considered a main target anyway. Weeklies and monthlies like Hello would be much more likely as they are aimed at "Mrs. Consumer".

Unless Daily Mail has begun to cover other Continental royals just as much, it seems much more likely to me that this is an attempt to suck up to the Australian readers.
I notice there are consistent and very clear references to Australia in the articles. Not least the headlines.

But at least those who do the articles do their homework. Spelling is right. They know how many children there are and their names. And the family relations are correct as well.

ADDED: I see Stettin/Szczecin is your hometown Zarat.

Perhaps you can tell us a little bit about the local coverage? And whats the word on the street?
Everything is interesting.

A very sweet story with pics from BT: Kræftsyg pige stjal Marys hjerte - Royale | www.bt.dk

Mary visited a hospital today and that included the cancer ward for children.
One girl she met here was three year old Kaja.
Mary had already been presented with flower upon arrival, but Kaja thought Mary should have one more.
After sniffing to the flower and caressing the girl, who clearly seeked Mary, Mary gave her bouquet to the girl.

Frederik and Mary have just been interviewed by the media and a little, but priceless part was shown in our early evening news

The media: "Have you at all had time to celebrate each other during your busy day today"

Mary: "Sure, busy yes, but we have been together" and smiles to Frederik.

Frederik: And then it's good we are sleeping in the same bed  (Frederik, Mary and media laughs) So we've woken up together, and think: already ten years? But it's lovely to have had ten years in this lovely way."

Think we will get more from the interview in the following tv-news... Or media.

Thanks Muhler, let's see what they're saying.
Quite nice interview .

It has btw been TV2's most read story the last hours - perhaps because of the changing: Crown Prince Frederik: Good, we're sleeping in the same bed. ;)

TV2's Ulla Terkelsen and other media had the opportunity to congratulate F&M and ask them a few questions on their 10th anniversary.

What does it mean to Frederik to having been married to his wife?

- "It's lovely to be two at work. It's one of the best thing that has happened to me. To the official events it's fantastic to be able to walk hand in hand together. But also to have an separately events during the day - so we then can share the exciting things we've experienced. This makes it less hard at the end of the day than it did before I got married."

F&M tell, however, that they haven't had time to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary yet during their very tight schedule in Poland.

- "But then it's good that we're sleeping in the same bed. Then you can wake up and say good morning and congratulate each other and think about how wild it is that 10 years already have passed, but in this delightful way."

Ulla Terkelsen asked Frederik if he could put some words on how Mary has done the first 10 years as the Danish Crown Princess?

- "It's hard to put into words. It's fantastic what she has done the past 10 years. Partly for herself personally and also what she has done for her new country. It's hard to summarize it into one word. It's simply so admirable. The fact that Australia also have taken part in the joy only makes one extra proud."

But how will Mary herself describe the last 10 years?

Has it been hard? A reporter asked.

- "It has been a journey. A wonderful and sometimes challenging journey, but I have enjoyed every moment and I am looking forward to all the decades that lie ahead."

It was also shown on the DR1 anniversary special.

There are a couple of charming little details.

Frederik is asked what it means in regards to the job that they are two.
he responds that it's an advantage to share the work, walk hand in hand from time to time but also how it's a good thing to work sperately too because that means that at the end of the day they can share their experiences and that makes it... and he was beginning to say "less dry" but corrected himself and said: "less hard".

Mary says" "It will certainly be an anniversary to remember, celebrating it here in Poland". And Frederik interjects: "You can say my surprise to my wife (formal word) was to invite her on a three day trip to Poland - in the presense of half the Polish population".

Polen | Kronprins Frederik takkede af ombord på Niels Juel

"Crown Prince Frederik and Mary has made a big impression on the trip - not only against the Poles - but also to the Danish participants learn polennu.dk .

Summary of articles in Billed Bladet #21, 2014.
Written by our correspondent in Poland, Marianne Singer.

They focus mainly on two things: Mary at the cancer ward and M&F's anniversary. Plus a little trivia.

There are no more info on the bracelet than what has already been said.

M&F were in Szczecin/Stettin on the day of their anniversary and as you know they were asked about their anniversary and they were in a visibly very good mood.
The TV2 reporter, Ulla Terkelsen, who turned 70 while in Poland (*), asked: "Ten years ago the Crown Princess started working as a professional representative for Denmark at home and abroad - most people think she has done fantastic. What do you think"?
Frederik: "It's difficult to put words on. It is indeed fantastic what the Crown Princess has done for the past ten years - partly in regards to what has happened to herself personally, partly of course also in regards to what she has done for her new country. It's difficult to fathom. It's simply so grand.
That Australia has also taken part in that joy makes one extra proud. That there is another country that feels they get a share of it as well".

Mary: "It's been a journey - a wonderful and at times challenging journey. I've enjoyed every moment and I look forward to the decades that lie ahead".

While in Szczecin Mary visited a hospital for children, the cancer ward to be exact. (Medication and medical treatment is a major Danish export, so it wasn't just for the photos). Here one of the patients, three year old Kaja, was waiting, complete with butterfly wings on her back.
Kaja managed to charm everyone present by walking around and shaking hands with everybody. She showed a serious interest in the BB photographers camera, so that had to be investigated further.

Mary came and while she was recieved Kaja almost stole the show by strolling around curiously looking at what was going on. That included the clutch of the Polish First Lady, Malgorzata Krzystek, which Kaja was allowed to have a peek in.
Then she turned her interest on Mary. That was a mighty fine bouquet Mary carried and Kaja would very much like to hold it, sure.
A momnet later Mary's LiW retrieved the bouquet but gave Kaja a flower from the bouquet. Flower in hand Kaja darted over to Mary and showed the flower to Mary.

But there were other children as well.
One of them was Roksana age seven, who while chatting to Mary, became shy. Hardly surprising! So Mary caressed the girls hand and that helped.
One of the boys was Krystian, age seven. Mary had a chat with him as well and told him: "My son's name is also Christian and is seven years old".

As you may remember Mary was met early on by a local fanclub, in the shape of six Polish teenage girls. Who were pretty delighted at seeing Mary and even more delighted when she came over and had a chat with them.
The one who took the initiative was eighteen year old Martha, who said afterwards: "It was fantastic! A huge experience for us"!
Martha is a royal blogger, so perhaps some here know who she is or have read her blog?

(*) She is an extremely experienced foreign affairs reporter and she also covers royalty. - Her presence doubled the average IQ of the presscorps...
