That's unexpected, to say the least ...
Wonder how it will turn out, as the State visits in France are pretty low key these days ...

Lumutqueen 02-03-2014 09:11 AM

It was unexpected really, it was announced with the press shuffle that Charles would accompany them and it was "likely" be her last trip to France.

Royal_Royal 02-03-2014 09:31 AM

Will The Duchess of Cornwall join them? The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh going to France with The Prince of Wales - and, possibly, The Duchess of Conrwall - remembers me of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands going to state visits accompanied by The Prince of Orange and Princess Máxima.

As far as i understand, the POW will be only at the D DAY events, not for the full State visit in Paris.

The D Day event was known about, but the additional 2 day state visit is new. great news

Iluvbertie 02-03-2014 02:38 PM

When we were told that Charles was to accompany her to the D-Day landings - was that by BP or CH or just the press?

I ask because this announcement from BP has no mention of him so now I am wondering whether he is actually going at all as I would have expected the official announcement from BP to include his name if he was accompanying his parents for any part of the trip - as has happened in the past.

Lumutqueen 02-03-2014 04:37 PM

It was announced to the press, I believe CH had a tweet about it. I'll go have a look. The press release is just for the State Visit of which Charles is not taking part in so I imagine it would solely be in the list of engagements for June.

BP have issued a full press release for the State Visit to France which also includes details of the D-Day Commemorations. I have also put this press release on the thread dedicated to the D-Day Commemorations

5th State visit to France for HM since 1957 and the most important visit of the year for the Hollande administration.

Full program here :

Visite d’État de S.M. la Reine Elizabeth II #DDay70 - Présidence de la République

A glimpse of the previous visits. Sadly the French Republican pomp and pageantry has been slowly but surely downgraded year after year. The Queen and the Duke will have a full state welcome at the Arc the Triomphe though.

@RE_DailyMail: The Marché aux Fleurs, just a few steps away from Notre Dame Cathedral, will now be called Marché aux Fleurs – Reine Elizabeth II.

@RE_DailyMail: The Queen also being treated as 'guest of honour' out of 19 heads of state at the D-Day commemorations, over and above even President Obama.

I think that is only fair. How many other current heads of state served, in any capacity, in WW2 as HM did in the ATS?
