Wasn't it Birgit Hallstein who made Mary's wedding dress? I mean the sewing, not the design.

ashelen 01-05-2012 05:37 PM

yes, she is
Frederik & Mary

Birgit Hallstein - Hallstein Haute Couture - Magnoliavej 32 - 2000 Frederiksberg - 40 35 55 02

i wonder how much she charge for alterations??? or making a dress? she probably made the other dress the green one that it had been alterated!

Well Mary looks boring, for a celebration I thought she'd wear something new.

Danish girl 01-14-2012 02:37 PM

I like the dress.
But she certainly has been wearing some sad colors today.

Baroness of Books 01-14-2012 02:43 PM

I can understand if Mary didn't want to take the limelight away from the Queen, but she could have dressed in a brighter color that I'm sure wouldn't have detracted from anything. Even a tone similar to the beautiful plum velvet gown she wore recently. It is a celebration, after all.

Terri Terri 01-14-2012 02:49 PM

She's not the only woman wearing black...and her top is very glittery!

Baroness of Books 01-14-2012 02:53 PM

Well, I'm basing my opinion on post #5's picture, and all I can see is one solid wall of black. I can barely see the top in that. Other royal ladies are certainly wearing bright colors.

IloveCP 01-14-2012 02:56 PM

This dress is boring.I wish she wore a brighter color. At least a nice repeat like that pink dress she wore at the Monaco wedding ball.

Terri Terri 01-14-2012 03:02 PM

She's wearing this recycled dress....it's the first time that she wears a tiara with the dress.

Archduchess Zelia 01-14-2012 03:02 PM

I think the dress is gorgeous, especially with the fur/cape/robe/thing she wore when she arrived.

Tarlita 01-14-2012 03:05 PM

I wouldn't say this is a good look for her. Her previous outings in this ensemble were better. The tiara looks at odds with this outfit.

That dress would have been lovely.
And I don't think there should be any talk of upstaging, everybody attending this event and reading about it knows why it's going on. Mary wearing bright clothes won't change Margrethe celebrating 40 years on the throne.

Danish girl 01-14-2012 03:09 PM

I really like the cape thingy.

Maybe not to you, but there are many who would criticize Crown Princess Mary for doing just that!:whistling:

Archduchess Zelia 01-14-2012 03:19 PM

The reporters (and especially fashion designer Jesper HÝvring) on DR commenting the evening seems to be certain that tomorrow will be a lot more exciting (and bright) dress wise.

Interesting....I wonder if he has designed a dress for Crown Princess Mary to wear tomorrow! He did design the orange dress from the 2010 New Year's Court and the dress from Crown Princess Victoria's wedding (modified for the November 2011 Australia visit) didn't he?

Then whoever those people are, would go down as ridiculously petty and childish in my book. Looking like you're attending an upmarket funeral is better than wearing a bright dress? I think not. If other Queens manage to wear bright colours and not be criticised, I don't see why Mary would. Even Alexandra wore red.

If he has, he's keeping it a secret ;) But earlier he said that he has designed a few of the dresses tonight (but not any royal dresses, sadly).

asma 01-14-2012 03:32 PM

I don't like this look at all.Although this cape or robe is one of my favorite pieces Mary owns,It doesn't look good with this black dress which itself isn't suitable for a tiara event.I don't like the difference in black shades between the top and the bottom of the dress also navy and black colours are not good combination here.

Terri Terri 01-14-2012 03:40 PM

The dress isn't navy and black...the top is in a glittering black material while the skirt appears to be black tulle or chiffon? It looks good with the tiara IMO. The cape is purple velvet and she was wearing diamond and amethyst (purple) earrings.

Additional photos!

I mean the navy cape as it appears on my computer and the black dress colour combination is not good But I changed my mind about the dress with the tiara after seeing better pics, the dress is looking good with the tiara.

Perhaps Alexandra wants to be noticed. ;)

Exactly! Crown Princess Mary for some reason or other, attracts a great deal of negative comment from some royal watchers. And this is the first time in 5 years that Alexandra has been invited to a royal event where she can wear her tiara! It is not as if she gets invited to royal gala events that often.
Crown Princess Mary...on the other hand...attends many Danish and foreign royal events where she can wear tiaras and dress glamorously!:flowers: So if she had decided to be more subdued and allow her mother-in-law to have the 'fashion' limelight for a couple days...then so be it!

Daria_S 01-14-2012 04:46 PM

I have no issues with the dress. It's simple enough to allow some nice jewelry, and the pieces Mary chose complete the look well. I like the contrast between the top and the bottom of this gown; provides balance and prevents the dress from looking too boring or too sparkly.

Madame Royale 01-14-2012 04:47 PM

I adore Mary in black (rather, charcoal this evening) and thankfully, she does too! ;)

MARG 01-14-2012 04:54 PM

Well put, Terri Terri. When it comes to Gala's it is usually all about Mary, but to be honest, Queen Margrethe can and does more than hold her own. That being said, if Mary has decided to hold back a little and let her Mother-in-Law stand alone in the spotlight for a celebration in her honour, I can only applaud her.

Nevertheless, it is not as if she wore cinders! I think the diamond tiara and the diamonds on the drop earrings complimented the bodice of the dress perfectly . The the flowing softness of the chiffon skirt gave the dress an elegant femininity. But the cape? Oh how I adore the lush richness of the purple velvet and how it's colour enhanced the Amethyst? drops on the earrings making them seem even more lustrous.

Tilla 01-14-2012 04:55 PM

What I find sympathetic is, that CP Mary dares recycling dresses.

Calenei 01-14-2012 04:56 PM

At first I didn't care for it but with more pictures from the event coming out I have to say she looks really lovely. Her earrings I love. :flowers:

Danish girl 01-14-2012 05:28 PM

Awesome back on that dress.

(don't have a picture, sorry)

rubies 01-14-2012 05:32 PM

Nice dress, I wish Mary would jewel up a bit more. Maybe a bracelet or something.

Frelinghighness 01-14-2012 05:52 PM

Thanks for all the great images, Terri.
That bejewled, sparkling top and flowing and ruched charcoal bottom is hardly holding back or funereal!
On the other hand, I like that she has worn a neutral palette today, I do think it shows respect.
I would also love a big amythest bracelet or diamonds

Crown Princess Mary first wore this dress on January 15th, 2005!!!! 7 years ago to the day!!! Before she had 4 children!

Gorgeous dress, or two piece attire, her hair is lovely but tonight for me its her makeup that is the real star! Very flattering colours and flawless complexion. Am so in love.

Frelinghighness 01-15-2012 12:16 AM

Thank you Terri for the images! What trap muscles w/back view of dress! M has certainly learned tiara hair in 6 years

Duke of Marmalade 01-15-2012 05:49 AM

Not liking this look at all, it gives me the snow white / evil queen vibe. Too dark and the cape doesnt help.

The more I look at this dress the more I like it!

Patra 01-15-2012 10:43 AM

I favor the top of the black evening gown, but would have like to see the bottom in a different color, and without all the strange random pleating.

bertie5252003 01-15-2012 11:34 AM

I am not sure about the gown .. I am thinking it is a bit boring it's nice and I love black I don't know that she could have worn a colour I love her eye shadow though.

There really seems to be an unspoken "requirement" to wear recycled fashion an adapt jewelry in various ways.

Fits well and is an ok outfit but I think it's a bit boring to be owen with a tiara and it's not a tiara dress at all.

udyusa 01-15-2012 12:11 PM

Mary looks stunning and very regal, imho. I just wish that she had anther tiara to wear, one that had more sparkle. She cannot wear the ruby and diamond one with everything!

kathia_sophia 01-15-2012 12:19 PM

^yes i agree, although i love this outift and tiara, a more glamourous and sparkly one would fit better. she could do a Maxima and wear lots of tiaras, but it seems Queen Margrethe doesnt allow her to more choices;_;

UserDane 01-15-2012 01:35 PM

It would be nice if we could see Marie and Mary lend QMII's small turquoise tiara once in a while in the future - now that we have seen princess Theodora wear it.
Wouldn't mind if QMII would share the Baden Palmette tiara as well with both her D-I-Ls - it would look amazing with their dark hair.

Baroness of Books 01-15-2012 04:14 PM

Too dark again but I like the neckline, and the ruby parure elevates tonight's look. Her hair is absolutely lovely.

Wow! I would like to look that boring! She looks elegant and very regal!
She is wearing a dress that was first seen in 2004 - 7-8 years ago! I noticed that Queen Margrethe's dress is of the same fabric and color!

Danish girl 01-15-2012 04:23 PM

Dark again. But absolutely lovely.
I like that the fabric is similar to the Queen's.

And rubies. Yay!

Lumutqueen 01-15-2012 04:31 PM

I love the rubies and the dress is beautiful. But black just looks depressing at such a fantastic event. Colour please Mary!

Terri Terri 01-15-2012 04:36 PM

The dress is navy...not black!
Here's the dress during a visit to Hamburg, Germany on February 17, 2006

Lumutqueen 01-15-2012 04:38 PM

Wow okay then. Still looks depressing that dark a dress. Mary's stunning velvet red dress would have been lovely or perhaps the one shoulder green dress worn for King CGs 60th. Or perhaps even something new.

Al_bina 01-15-2012 04:46 PM

The gala dress is a safe choice. Crown Princess Mary's complexion is amazing.

almee 01-15-2012 04:52 PM

Today's outfit is nice, velvet really suits her.

Daria_S 01-15-2012 05:31 PM

Another 'wow' for me. I liove the shade, texture and style of the dress. Perfect to wear with the fancy jewelry pieces. The up-do is gorgeous.

Marika86 01-15-2012 05:45 PM

I would have expected a new gown, anyway it's a nice dress. Mary looks pretty

missjane 01-15-2012 10:09 PM

The navy dress in velvet ( such a luxurious fabric) really allows the rubies to shine. Am so happy to see the necklace, haven't seen it for a while. The dress neckline is such a good shape for this. Also love that this dress compliments the queens dress colour wise. Am very impressed with the recycling from years ago. Good for you Mary!

bertie5252003 01-15-2012 11:40 PM

Well IMO who cares what colour this little number is with all that diamond and ruby action TOTAL LOVE OF THE JEWELS

Nahla10 01-15-2012 11:41 PM

a navy-blue dress and pink jewelry? not a good combination. But she looks gorgeous anyways.

udyusa 01-15-2012 11:56 PM

Pink jewels?? I see Red rubies on her tiara and around her neck and she looks Magnificent!! Truly elegant and regal in her navy velvet gown.. Frederik looks wonderful, as well... :)

Agree with you. That recycled navy blue dress surprised me but she still looks elegant and stunning with the ruby parure.

ANNIE_S 01-16-2012 07:38 AM

I think that dress is THE DRESS for the ruby parure. The jewells look amazing against the navy blue velvet.

rubies 01-16-2012 08:35 AM

wow, Mary has worn this dress 4 times. It seems this January she went to the back of her closet and pulled out alot of daytime and evening clothes. I see where her shoes from the church service are from her engagement!! THis is what buying classic does. Good for her. (even though I was hoping for something new) I do know these kind of formal court clothes are very expensive so maybe something new for spring....?

sofajr 01-16-2012 08:39 AM

CP Mary is a Queen of recycle on the whole celebrations!
I never liked the dress, way too simple and not special.
Even her perfect make-up and beautiful set of jewelry can't help.

Dierna23 01-16-2012 11:49 AM

To summarize my opinion: overall I thought she looked good and elegant at all the evening events during the jubilee. I was just surprised that she mainly went for pretty dark and dull colors - would have loved to see her in wine-red for example which suits her very well.

Oh and I'm glad she removed the pearl-string from the tiara. ;)

Terri Terri 01-16-2012 05:50 PM

My summary opinion: Crown Princess Mary went out of her way to not steal any attention from Queen Margrethe by dressing in previously worn outfits and in colors that would not attract huge media attention. She was very successful in accomplishing her goal.:flowers:

That being said....she's done her good deed for the year....and now I say...Bring on the glamor!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Back to the old Mary now!:rofl:

Baroness of Books 01-16-2012 06:48 PM

Well, I don't see how wearing colors would have stopped the presses, but the midnight blue gown of the second evening was definitely elevated by the ruby parure and served as a lovely background for the jewels.

Madame Royale 01-16-2012 10:10 PM

Black, charcoal and dark navy suit the Crown Princess better than any other colour or shade (off white, cream, and ivory permitting).

There is something tastefully seductive about the presence of a woman who adheres to such style, and who at the same time maintains themselves as an admirably demure vision. In that possibly lies the seduction itself and Mary epitomises this in my personal and professional opinion.

Her skin tone is quite lovely and possess a fine porcelain hue. Her hair compliments her complexion and her complexion compliments the colouring of her hair. It's a fortunate marriage and she presents a striking and stately figure.

I am somewhat romanced by the goth inspired purity of fashion seen in the late Renaissance and the influence it had in the 18th and 19th centuries. Black was especially favoured and worn with exceptional aplomb by women of status and wealth in the 17th century; notably the nobility. Particularly in Scandinavia, the Holy Roman Empire and France was it considered ŗ la mode and was not necessarily worn in the event of mourning. Infact, often women would consummate their grief with white out of respect for the flight of a loved ones soul and wear black, or any silhouette shade, as a principal choice.

This of course proceeded to change with time but the influence remained and thankfully, the inspiration of dark dress remains a celebrated aspect of European couture in the most contemporary of ways.

Quote:

Beautiful overall but the dress needed to be bigger for such an event. It looks like this was just another gala with that dress.

I think Mary looked good in both her dresses, I prefer the second one based on the tighter fit at the top and the jewels. But is she wearing two skirts?

It's the Order of the Elephant - the highest order of Denmark, existing since several centuries and
nowadays almost exclusively bestowed on royalty and heads of state

blujean 01-19-2012 04:13 AM

The blue velvet dress is pretty but I like the black dress more minus the blue cape which doesn't look good with it. My she has alotta bling bling going on. Love it!

PrincessApple 01-20-2012 04:18 AM

I have been surprised by Mary's choices, but I do love the navy velvet dress, I always have, and seeing it with the all the rubies...wow!

Daisiesforever 01-20-2012 05:35 AM

Crown Princess Mary does indeed look lovely. Her hair is beautifully done and the tiara looks superb. However, I am not certain that this is the most flattering gown I have seen her in. The velvet fabric almost seems to "cling" to her body and the gown is certainly not bold enough to match her very regal and dashing Prince Frederik. Possibly an organza or tulle lining would have lifted the skirt and given a bit more substance at the base.
