Prinsjesdag 2011

* *

The annual Prinsjesdag will take place on September 20 this year.

The parliamentary session is opened on the third Tuesday of September each year and Queen Beatrix
delivers the throne speech in which the government announces its targets for the coming year.

Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and Crown Princess Máxima, Prince Constantijn, Princess Laurentien,
Princess Margriet and Prof. Pieter van Vollenhoven will attend as well.

Here's the information from the royal website and the official site:

The whole thing has become a farce as for the umptieth time the government plans were leaked to the press.

And to make it more idiotic: two MP's have problems with the golden state carriage. One of the scenes painted in the interior depicts the colonies & shows black people receiving 'civilization'. The carriage was painted in 1898 (long after slavery was abolished) but well... The MP's themselves are a former communist and a woman who was accused of unethical behavior during her years as diplomat (hiring the company of her boyfriend) and none have apologized for that yet... So perhaps they can start with themselves before they get some paint and redo the ceiling of the golden carriage.

Quote:

AMSTERDAM -- Critics urged the Dutch royal family Friday to get rid of a painting they say is an offensive reminder of wrongs from the Netherlands' colonial past, but the Royal House defended the 19th-century work as an important part of the country's history.
"Homage of the Colonies" decorates one side of Queen Beatrix's iconic gold-trimmed carriage, and depicts half-naked, brown-skinned women and men in servile poses bearing gifts to an enthroned white woman.

Good reaction by the RVD (for a change):

Scheveningen Cavalerie Ere-Escorte oefenen met paarden dmv munitie en rookbommen op het strand van Scheveningen voor Prinsjesdag.

I translated the caption with Google translate "Scheveningen Honorary Escort Cavalry horses through practice ammunition and smoke bombs on the beach of Scheveningen on Budget Day".

Maybe our Dutch friends could help us to translate the caption correctly

This is the annual practie at the beach in Scheveningen. The horses are 'trainied' with noic, smoke bombs etc. in the hope that tomorrow they will stay calm.

NOS.nl is streaming coverage of Prinsjesdag live at the following link:

NOS Nieuws - Live - Politiek 24

--

Everyone is on their way to Ridderzaal. Princess Máxima is wearing what appears to be a long-sleeved gold/beige sparkly gown, with a brownish floppy hat. Haven't seen any of the other ladies yet.

Princess Laurentien in silver. Queen Beatrix - usual cake hat, curtain material dress, feathers. Princess Margriet in red. Seeing Máxima's gown clearer inside, it's an olive-green sparkly gown, with a slightly darker floppy hat, which looks like felt.

Group shot inside the Ridderzaal.

ANP gallery - will be updated with more pictures.

Thanks for posting the links - it's so interesting to see!

BTW, I think NOS has described Maxima's dress as being "seagreen" by the looks of it (een zeegroene japon van crepe georgette)

HM's hat also has glitter thread through it - sparkly ;)

Not a very flattering hat at all. Just far too large for her. The dress looks okay but because she is sitting down, one cannot see the proper picture.

Wearing this particular hat with such a dress - what was Maxima thinking???

While I like the dress I dont like it being worn with a sash that is partly covered.

All in all a very strange look.

detective on duty maybe?! :big grin:
Well, its either Maxima's hat or Queen Bee's feathered jacket which looks quite odd as well.
Im liking Maxima's earrings and dress color.

The last person I remember wearing such a hat was Harrison Ford on Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade ;)

I just added some photos on my website:

Is it only me that finds the practice of wearing gorgeous(ish) outfits with hats, a bit odd?

agami.pearl 09-20-2011 12:02 PM

I think it's quite unusual these days. But in the past it was more popular, BRF's weddings in the beginning of 20th century or wedding of M-T and GD Henri.

Princejohnny25 09-20-2011 12:31 PM

I love that the Dutch still hold on to this dress code. I think they are the only royal house that still does. Even for the wedding of Carl and Silvia, this was the dress code. I find when the look is done right, it can come of super elegant. Love Queen Bee and her uniform, I am a big fan of Maxima's choice(even the Indiana Jones hat!)

:previous:

Me too, other royal families have their traditional costumes for certain celebrations and
they have their special dress code, that's also a nice tradition.
