Queen Noor of Jordan states in her book Leap of Faith: Memoirs of an Unexpected Life that she is a good friend of Queen Sofia of Spain, Empress Farah of Iran, King Constantine and Queen Anne Marie of the Hellenes.

I've seen Prince Albert and Prince Charles together on several occasions. They probably talk a lot about the environment, which is a good thing. I heard somewhere that Albert and Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden were hanging out at a wedding or something, and they were reported to be love intrests, but she said they were just good friends. Does anybody have anything else about this, I found it a little hard to believe.

This has nothing to do with being good friends. Because Prince Rainier and Queen Elizabeth never attend foreign events, their sons come after the reigning Sovereigns.

That is one. The second reason is that the Prince de Monaco and The Queen are the Doyen and Doyenne of Europe's Sovereigns. The rank of their Heirs is linked to the Reign.

If there were only Crown Princes back then in Madrid, then their ranks would have been:

The Crown Prince of Thailand (1946)
The Hereditary Prince of Monaco (1949)
The Prince of Wales (1952)
The Heir to the Sultanate of Oman - at the moment incumbent (1970)
The Crown Prince of Denmark (1972)
The Crown Princess of Sweden (1973)
The Prince of Asturias (1975)
The Prince of Orange (1980)
The Heir to the King of Swaziland (1986)
The Crown Prince of Japan (1989)
The Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein (1989)
The Crown Prince of Norway (1991)
The Duke of Brabant (1993)
The Heir to the Emirate of Qatar (1995)
Prince Hussein bin al-Abdullah of Jordan (1999)
The Crown Prince of Morocco (1999)
The Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg (2000)
The Crown Prince of Nepal (2001)
The Crown Prince of Cambodia - at the moment incumbent (2004)
The Heir to the United Arab Emirates - at the moment incumbent (2004)
The Heir to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (2005)
The Crown Prince of Kuwait (2006)
The Crown Prince of Bhutan - at the moment incumbent (2006)

The list shows that until the death of Prince Rainier III, the Prince of Wales and the Hereditary Prince of Monaco always were placed next together, conform the traditional preseance at the Court.

Good, close friends are the Dukes of Palma, the Prince and Princess of Preslav and Prince Feisal and Princess Alia of Jordan

They usually spend a lot of time together in the summer

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/b...R_00187761.jpg

And they go to the respective birthday parties as friends and such, just like Prince Feisal's 40th birthday in 2003

It's quite well-known that the Spanish and Jordanian RF's are close, Noor and Sofia were well-known for their friendship.

However, does anyone know how long Alia and Feisal have been close to the Spanish RF for? Moreover didn't Felipe and Letizia spend time in Jordan last year? Were they staying independently or with the Royals?
Thanks!

Alison20 08-16-2007 08:17 PM

Queen Elizabeth often invites Queen Margarethe, Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg and (used to invite) King Hussein to stay at Balmoral. Since this is a private home which she retires to in the summer, I would think she would invite those she likes.

It is also well known that the British Royal Family is very friendly with the Greek Royal Family. They have a lot of family connections, not only through Prince Philip and the late Duchess of Kent, but through the Danish side of both families with Queen Anne-Marie and the late Queen Alexandra.

They are also closely related to the Norwegian RF. When King Olav was alive, he was also often over visiting.

The Queen herself rarely travels abroad except on State and Official visits. I am not sure what the reason is for this. Perhaps it is her own personal decision. But I believe that when she came to the throne, so soon after the War, the Government view was that 'hobnobing' with Continental Royalty was not the right thing, particularly because so many of Prince Philip's close relatives (and some of the Queen's) were German. This just seems to carry on now. Of course, it is easy to forget that the Queen is in her eighties. At her age it is understandable that she asks Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward to attend all the weddings, christenings and birthday parties to represent her.

Weren't there rumours at one time that the Queen had assisted the Greek RF financially? If that were ture then it is certainly the strongest indicator of the closeness of their relationship.

Prince Hassan and Princess Sarvath are quite close to members of the Danish and Dutch Royal Families. When their daughter Princess Badiya got married Princess Benedikte attended the wedding, possibly in a private capacity as there was no Jordanian Royal present at Fred and Mary's wedding. Additionally there was a large turnout from the Netherlands including, Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien, Prince Maurits, Prince Bernhard Jr. and Princess Annette, Prince Pieter Christiaan and his then-fiancee Anita van Eyck, Prince Floris and his then-fiancee Aimee Sohngen. Other foreign attendees came from Luxembourg and Bulgaria.

The Badens seems to be very well represented, markgrave Max, his wife Valerie, trhe brother and sister in law of the markgrave (Ludwig and Aglae) and his son Bernhard with wife Stephanie. And I might be forgetting one or two sons. It is safe to assume they befriended Prince Hassan too.

Alia and Feisal have been good friends with the Dukes of Palma since the late ones went to their honeymoon in Jordan in 1997, the Princes of Preslav have always been close to the Palmas so they befriended Alia and Feisal as well

The whole group is: The Dukes of Palma (and sometimes Elena joins as well), Princess Alexia and Carlos Morales, Cristina de Borbon Dos Sicilias and Pedro Lopez-Quesada, Prince Feisal and Princess Alia of Jordan, Prince Kyril and Princess Rosario of Bulgaria, sometimes they are joined by Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, they aren't many royals who spend as much time together as these ones do;)

The Princes of Asturias began their honeymoon in Jordan after the wedding of the prince Hamzah. Later I believe that it was in the vacations of Holy Week of 2006 the Princes returned to travel to Jordan, and according to the Spanish press they were present at some type of celebration deprived on the occasion of the wedding of the Prince Hashem. When they travel to Jordania they are guests of the Royal Family.

I have never seen this whole group hanging out all together even once. Except for Haakon and MM, the rest are Cristina's cousins (Alexia and Cristina BS) or friends. Haakon and MM are good friends of Kyril and Rosaria and were staying at their house in Mallorca a few times. Since Cristina and Inaki befriends with Kyril and Rosaria, they were hanging out together a little, Haakon and MM are neither good friends of Cristina or Inaki, or the rest of the group.

I think they are close indeed tough I am never too generous wit the term ´friend´. Albert consulted only two people (apart from his immidiate family) when he wondered if he should accept the throne or pass it on to Phillipe: Juan-Carlos and Beatrix.

The hostility between the House Van Oranje-Nassau and the House Van België / De Belgique / Von Belgien has indeed gone since the interbellum, when finally the two Sovereigns from the neighbouring states did visit each other.

Before that there was a frosty cold between the King of the Netherlands, Grand Duke of Luxembourg, whose two European Realms bordered the new state (result of a break up with the Netherlands). There was genuine respect between Queen Juliana/Queen Beatrix and King Baudouin. Between Queen Beatrix and King Albert II there seems to be mutual feelings of friendship indeed. So the relationship has come to this point, from far.

Since Donna has said, I do not believe that they are friends, they coincide because they have a few friends jointly, the Dukes of Palma, but I do not believe that they have a great friendship. They coincide in Palma de Mallorca, only that. The Dukes of Palma are friends of the Princes of Preslav and the Princess Alia spends the vacations with the Spanish Royal Family and they coincide. Of the same way Hakoon and Mette Marit they are friends of the princes of Preslav and can coincide with the Dukes of Palma. I believe that the link it is more the common friendship than a strong friendship between all.

crisiñaki 08-17-2007 12:26 PM

Haakon and Mette-Marit are friends with the Preslav and are usually guests of the Dukes of Palma when they come to Mallorca (I have never seen the CPs of Norway in Mallorca with either Lugos or Asturias), obviously Alexia and Cristina are cousins of Infanta Cristina, but for example Iñaki is good friends with both their husbands and you see them hanging around a lot and with Kyril as well; so at least Cristina+Cristina BDS+Alexia+Kyril+Feisal are friends with each other (the friend of my friend is my friend )

Faisal and Alia come to Mallorca every year, you see her with Cristina all the time in there (well, not now since the Infantas are both in Montenegro) and as I shown in pics before, they spend a lot of time together (I don't think they would spend every summer together for an obligation;)) and if you noticed the birthday pics carefully, all you see is good friends having a good time, there weren't much foreign guests, only the closest ones

The Dukes of Palma are the ones who have more interaction with the other royal houses since they go to a lot of events, but I won't say for example that Iñaki is best friends with him just for this pic:
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...NA%204/2-1.jpg

Or that Cristina & Madeleine are REALLY close just for this:
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...istinaback.jpg

I'm just naming the ones that are actually close with the Dukes of Palma away from protocol and obligations; and as for family, you don't see for example Bruno & Felipe or Frederik & Pavlos hanging out with their wives like Alexia and Cristina do with their husbands, we aren't necessarily friendly with all our relatives or even with our in-laws:cool:

One more thing, about the group being all together: are you always with ALL your friends? I don't think so and in terms of agenda and such, it's almost impossible for them to be all together unless is in a royal celebration or so, doesn't mean they are not friends;)

I don't think it's enough to claim that two royals are friends because they conversed at a royal gathering. Haakon and Mette-Marit were never the guests of Cristina and Inaki in Mallorca. They were always the guests of Kyril and Rosario and stayed at the house of Kyril and Rosario. It was the courtesy of the SRF to invite other royals to sail on Yacht Fortune for a day or so when they vacationed in Mallorca. Frederick of Denmark (and Mary) had also been invited to sail on Fortune in 2002 when they vacationed in Mallorca.

I agree with you completely, I gave two examples above of the situation;)

And as for the Frederik/Mary thing, are you sure it was on 2002? since they haven't gotten married then, maybe they went as friends? and who was their host that time? Felipe? The Queen? I would like to know so I can search for pics:smile:

There were no pictures of them with any member of the SRF. billedbladet had a picture of them standing next to their car and closing the car door. The press said the King invited Frederick, he brought his then girlfriend Mary with him. I believe Frederick had also been invited the previous years with his exes (Maria and Betina).
Felipe was not there (not sure about the other members). My observation over the years, except for the period of regatta competitions, Felipe never spent much time in Mallorca. He was usually on trips with his friends.

wow crisiñaki, you gave us a lot of photos to notice the friendship.
It's well known that Cristina and Alexia are very closed friends...they spent a flat in Barcelona and also Alexia is the godmother of Pablo.
With Hakoon and MM maybe it's not so close, but also between the Preslav couple and Palma couple there is a long time friendship...you can see in vacations or not vacations, even Rosario is the godmother of Irene.

And also I am with you that even if you are in some ocassion with somebody it doesn't mean that you have a good friendship, it can only be the photo ;)

An article about Princess Alia of Jordan that gives a glimpse of her close friendship with Infanta Cristina:flowers:

ABC.es: gente - gente - La princesa que se enamoró de España
Quote:

"The Princess who fell in love with Spain"

One of the closest friends of Infanta Cristina of Spain, Princess Alia of Jordan is a discreet person, almost invisible, always present in the most relaxed pics of the Spanish Royal Family. The young princess, sister-in-law of Abdullah and Rania of Jordan, is already a member of the inner circle of the Kings of Spain. Alia can easily pass as spanish and she almost makes us believe she's a regular spanish girl, confident of the youngest daughter of the Kings of Spain...

...A lot of people remember the overwhelming embrace between Princess Alia and Infanta Cristina during the State Funeral for the 11M victims. The Almudena Cathedral was the scenario of Alia's tears, she became just like another spaniard side by side with her close friend; the scene took place just outside the church and didn't go unnoticed, even thought a lot of people wondered who was that young lady who was so touched by the drama of nearly 200 families and the sadness of the Kings and their children...

Ahhhh yes - the good old times when queen Margrethe was sporting plaits with red bows ;)
They had these skiing holidays for several years before Margrethe's knee problems put a stop to it, didn't they?

Orange-Nassau: closest with the Brabants and with (part) of the Jordans

The Orange-Nassaus are happy to be on friendly terms with almost all Houses. (There are also Houses with almost no relationship outside the official contacts, for an example Monaco).

Two of the closest relationships are the one between Prince Willem-Alexander/Princess Máxima and Prince Philippe/Princess Mathilde.
They seem to see each other quite regularly outside all the events we see in public.

Also close are the relationships between Prince Willem-Alexander/Princess Máxima and Princess Rahma bint al Hassan, Princess Sumaya bint al Hassan, Princess Badiya bint al Hassan and Prince Rashid bin al Hassan. Reason for the friendship is the long, long and close relationship of Queen Beatrix and the late Prince Claus with their parents Prince Hassan bin al Talal and Princess Sarvath al Hassan. They hardly come in public but due to their parents' close friendship, the four children of the couple and the three sons of Queen Beatrix know each other like cousins.

From 1965 to 1999 Prince Hassan and Princess Sarvath were the Crown Prince and -Princess of Jordan. Therefore they had many contacts with their 'colleagues', many of them now Sovereigns in the meantime. There is no any major highday (or sad day) in the House of Orange-Nassau without Prince Hassan and Princess Sarvath. During last week's Ball at Het Loo Palace, the couple was present as well, accompanied by the beautiful Princess Sumaya and Princess Badiya (and their spouses).

King Constantine of Greece and Prince Philip seem to be close. I know that they are cousins, but they also seem to be good friends.

Princesses Victoria and Madeline of Sweden seem to have a very close relationship. They are sisters, but they also seem to be very close friends. :flowers:

Monaguese - Belgian - British Royal Family
I read in Prince Amedeo of Belgium thread that he invited Prince Beatrice and Pierre Casiraghi to his birthday party few years ago.

Monaguese - Luxembourg Royal Family
Based on the infos (correct me if I'm wrong), Prince Felix of Luxembourg is currently attending the same university with Tatiana Santo Domingo, a girlfriend of Andrea Casiraghi in New York. Prince Felix is also an extended friend of Valentine Pozzo di Borgo, a friend of Charlotte Casiraghi in facebook. Prince Guillaume did watch a soccer game in Monaco with Prince Albert, Andrea and Peirre in 2005, but that one when he was in Monaco for formal ocassion.

Monaguese - British Royal Family
Prince Albert definitely a friend of Prince Charles. They met up again early 2007 for an environmental event, but that's formal. Princess Grace and Prince Albert was invited as a special guest .. or something during the wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles. We know the story of Princess Grace and Princess Diana and her advice to her. She attended her funeral in 1981. Prince Philips's father used to live in Monaco and there're pics of Prince Philips and Princess Grace in Monaco thread together with other members. However, QEII did not attend the wedding of Prince Ranier and Princess Grace as she mentioned the ocassion would be attending by too many celebrities. Princess Caroline and Prince Ernst did meet up with QEII in 1990 to ask for the approval of their marriage. I think they stop visiting each other since the death of Princess Grace. Prince Harry was attending the same rugby games with Prince Albert and Andrea Casiraghi in Paris (England vs France), so sure they would seat separately .

According to the Grand Ducal family website Felix is not in school but at a Swiss Company specializing in Sports. So he may know Tatiana but I'm not sure. here is the link if you want to go read about him: Cour grand-ducale de Luxembourg - Le Prince Félix

The Orange Royal families has good relations with every other and the moroccan royal family with no other because of Hassan II's discourtesy (especially with Queen Elizabeth).

The last sidi Mohammed now M6 was very close to Prince Laurent when in Brussels, the moroccan RF seems also closed to Albert of Monaco, a few little with the Juan Carlos and that's all !! So they are never invited in European events.

Royal Friends

Who else in the world of royals are best friends aside from Haakon, Victoria, and Frederik; and Mathilde and Mette-Marit?

antonieta 01-28-2010 01:53 PM

Mathilde and Maxima

Maura724 01-28-2010 06:47 PM

I didn't know Mathilde and Mette-Marit were friends - they seem so different.

Queens Sonja and Margrethe have been very close for decades.

I think there might already be a thread like this somewhere. :flowers:

If you had known anything about the subject you were commenting about you would know that these three are actually on a very friendly footing.
Devoid of emotions Victoria - haughty Frederik LOL I like the unintended humour in your perception:rofl:

Frederik and Haakon are very good friends. Frederik having been Haakon's best man.

Frederik and Victoria, apart from being 1st cousins twice removed, are also very close.

And Haakon and Victoria are also known to be good friends.

I don't see what's so strange about it, myself.

From what I've seen and heard, Mary and Mette-Marit are friendly with one another; the same can be said for Mary and Victoria who seem to enjoy one anothers company aswell. The Scandinavian royals seem to be a relatively close bunch, really.

I also get the impression that there may be somewhat of a friendship between Mary and Mathilde aswell. That Mathilde is Princess Isabella's godmother would indicate to me that there is reason enough to assume as much. Though an assumption, I don't think you'd invite someone to be the godmother of your daughter if a friendship wasn't established.

Kasumi 03-06-2010 05:07 AM

I'd like to add that Crown Princess Mathilde and Princess Lalla Salma seem to be very close. They were enjoying each others company during the Belgian visit to Morocco recently.
Sorry if I had missed someone's previous posting about these charming royal ladies' friendship!

NoorMeansLight 03-06-2010 09:48 AM

And what about Rania and Lalla Salma? They seem pretty close (I'm sorry if this has been discussed before).:flowers:

Mademoiselle Lilo 03-06-2010 12:46 PM

:previous: they seem to get long well together the few times they met,so yes i think they have a good relationship.
i can say the same about Lalla Salma and Sheikha Mozah they also seem very friendly with each other when they met especially during the king of Thailand Throne celebrations.

I think that Mary, Mette-Marit and Maxima get along very well. You could guess this during the wedding festivities in Sweden. The three Ms seemed to have a good time with each other, even posing for private fotos that Frederik took from them. I can imagine that Victoria is also close to them.

nascarlucy 07-05-2010 03:22 PM

A lot of royal families are related to each other. They are close to each other. This is different than being a family friend or a friend.

Not sure about 'good friends' as for the Danish and Dutch.

Belgium, Spain, Denmark and Sweden where all chosen as godmother/godfather for the childern of Frederik & Mary, for me it was remarkable that the dutch where not.

The Royal Family of Belgium and the Grand Ducal Family of Luxembourg are good friends as well. King Albert II of Belgium and his family always attend Grand Duke Jean's birthday parties held every January 5. :D

Aliza 07-06-2011 11:12 PM

The British Royal Family and the Royal Family of Greece are very tight, probably due to the blood ties through both the Duke of Edinburgh, born a Prince of Greece and Denmark and also the late Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent who was also born a Princess of Greece and Denmark. And of course, there was already a tie there due to Edward VII marrying Princess Alexandra of Denmark and it was her younger brother William who became King of Greece and started the current dynasty.

stephanievl 02-09-2012 02:17 PM

After looking at the recent pictures of Frederik and Mary in Brussels and the presency of Philippe and Mathilde at the birthday party of Mary I think they have a close friendship.

Closeness helped of course by the Greeks actually living in London.

I think that so-called rivalry is made up by the tabloids. I don't see why there should be some kind of feud between Mary and Marie, they seem to get along quite fine. I recall Marie saying in some interview that Mary has been very helpful to her, but that it is hard to keep daily contact due to the fact that Marie and Joachim mainly lives on Schackenborg and Mary and Frederik lives in Copenhagen. We'll never know though.
