Painted Royal Portraits (June 2009 Informal Poll)
Welcome to the
June 2009 Informal Picture of the Month Poll!

This month's pictures showcase Painted Royal Portraits.

The pictures in this poll show the informal side of royalty. It will close on 30 July 2009. During this time, we ask that NO ONE STATE WHOM THEY'VE VOTED FOR so as not to influence other members as they make their choices. After the poll closes, you can discuss as much as you'd like about which image you voted for and why.

This month, our Picture of the Month representatives had help in selecting their images with a small committee of their choosing. Below, you can see each royal house's representative (in bold) followed by their chosen committee members.

What a wonderful idea. I've never seen half of those pictures. It was a hard decision. :flowers:

oh so many nice pictures!

i have to admit that i absolutely love historical portraits. They were so graceful; so truly royal. something i miss in more modern portraits.

thank you so much for all of the pictures!

I am absolutely delighted that pictures from non-reigning houses (France, Austria and Hungary, Egypt, Iran and Greece) are included in this poll. :flowers:
May I just ask why pictures from Russia and Romania weren't included?
I understand the committees must have had hard work as it is, however both Russian and Romanian Royal Families could have offered some truly spectacular choices.

Once again, you couldn’t make the selection any harder. I simply didn’t seem to be able to choose between two pictures in particular – just kept clicking from one to the other. The picture I chose in the end (after more than 20 minutes of painful selection process) appealed to me because it was original and not like any Royal Portrait I have seen. It just mesmerized me the moment I opened the link.

LadyK 07-13-2009 05:54 PM

Russia and Romania are not included because we don't have committees to select pictures for them. The only non-reigning house that currently has a committee is Greece. Her_Majesty, Anna_S, Humera, and Warren were generous to select pictures for the non-reigning houses.

We'd love to have pictures included for all the royal families. If you (or anybody else) would like to volunteer to select pictures from the non-reigning houses, please contact me, Dazzling, or Empress.

Thank you for answering my question about Russia and Romania, LadyK. :flowers:

I see your point!

I prefer old school portraits of royals from the 18th century. I do not like recent ones from this century.

The one I voted for better win or else I am going to have to go postal on everyone! :skull:

Humera 07-15-2009 03:08 PM

The Monaco and Jordan portraits are by the same artist, Ralph Wolfe Cowan.
He has also painted many portraits of the Royal Family of Brunei.
I like his style, it has a unique storybook feel to it.

ANNIE_S 07-20-2009 03:24 PM

what a wonderful poll!!:flowers:
Great portraits everyone!the old ones and the news.
But it isn't so hard to choose when your favourite royal ever is in the poll :whistling::whistling:

Are you sure that "M'" is a portrait of Queen Astrid of the Belgians, and not of her daughter Josephine-Charlotte?

For the sake of comparison, here are two photos: the first is of Astrid, the second of Josephine-Charlotte (at an older age).

To my eye, the shape of the face and the features in portrait "M" are much more similar to Josephine-Charlotte's than to Astrid's. The two of them had a certain "air de famille," but they really looked quite distinct from each other -- especially in the shape of the face and the nose.

Marengo 07-23-2009 10:54 PM

I am 100% sure that the painting is of Queen Astrid: it hangs in the royal palace of Brussels. And Josephine Charlotte never wore the diademe that queen Astrid received from her in-laws. The earrings that she wears in this portrait were however inherited by her daughter, and were up for sale a while back (at the auction of the late Grand Duchess' jewels that never happened). Furthermore, the style of dress was very popular in the 30-ties.

IMO Josephine-Charlotte and Astrid resembled each other a lot. It is a very nice portrait IMO, one of the nicest ones I know. The queen has simple clothes, the setting is simple but it has a very regal air.
