Auckland is unofficially known as the City of Sails.

---------

Article in one of the bigger newspapers in NZ: King with the democratic touch - World - NZ Herald News
Doesn't really talk about the visit to NZ until the bottom of the 2nd page, but that it why it is on the website.

The article says that they want to help Spanish businesses expand into NZ, then in return NZ gains access to the Latin American market.
They will meet with some Maori with some Spanish ancestry.

--------

I google translated the articles above, one says they arrived (note: past tense) at 2300 local time - interesting given that its 2305 now!!! ;)

Juanita 06-21-2009 11:52 AM

It wasn't supposed to be arriving on tuesday?

lula 06-21-2009 12:47 PM

The King and the Queen left Madrid on Thursday, the plane did a technical stop in Aman´s airport, where Prince Ali received them, and they arived on Friday to Singapore. In Singapore they had a dinner with the president. Later they directed New Zealand where they arrived on Saturday. The official activity begins on Monday, the 22nd.

The King and the Queen are 70 years old, they are not young and these trips are very tired, for the hours of trip and the change of hour. Their official plane does not have autonomy to do this trip without stops, and in occasions in these long trips they take advantage of the opportunity to stop and to meet with presidents of little countries .

marmi 06-21-2009 05:00 PM

I think that it is Tuesday that they fly from Auckland (NZ) to Wellington (NZ)

Was there no state dinner hosted by the Governor General?

marmi 06-23-2009 01:03 AM

No I dont think so. Its odd, but there's been no mention of one, and he's now listed as being in Auckland, not Wellington.
There was never any mention of anything for last night, but I did read something about tonight. Think that is maybe the PM (John Key) though.

There are pictures of the PM and his wife with the king and Queen during the day today, so they are about (meaning they've flown her down from Auckland specially, which I think means something tonight is more likely).

--------------

It was announced today at parliament in TM presence that New Zealanders aged 18-30 are now able to work in Spain for 6 months, and remain in the country for up to a year. It's a reciprocal agreement so it works the other way too.
The Spanish Secretary of State signed the document, he is travelling with TM.

The traditional greeting of the Māori is, in my view, one of the loveliest the world over. Such a warm and beautiful gesture of acceptance.

As for Queen Sofia, HM has always seemed to me, a lovely lady...and so elegantly presented.

Even in her maturing age, Dona Sofia is an attractive lady and her hairstyle, though having remained consistent, does not look in the slightest, dated. She has a smile that would light up a room, imo.

I hope their passge to Australia is a safe one, even though not very long (four to five fours), and that they leave our little neighbour with a renewed and lasting impression of it's beauty and the hospitality of it's people.

I agree completely with your words. Queen Sofía is beautiful and charming.
