Historical Royal Portraits (February 2009 Informal Poll)
 

In this month's poll we have some historical portraits of royalty from our Picture of the Month Committees.



The monthly informal polls will highlight the un-official/historical and rarely seen side of royalty as opposed to the formal side of royalty.

The informal polls will consist of pictures that show a royal or some aspect of royal life historical or present that is more candid than our formal polls.




If you have any ideas or suggestions for future polls you can contact LadyK or Empress.


This month, our Picture of the Month representatives had help in selecting their images with a small committee of their choosing. Below, you can see each royal house's representative (in bold) followed by their chosen committee members.

A special thanks goes out to Humera and Warren who also contributed pictures for Bukhara, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, and Turkey.


The poll will be open for three weeks. It will close on 27 March 2009. During these three weeks, we ask that no one state whom they've voted for so as not to influence other members as they make their choices. For the final week of the month, you can discuss as much as you'd like about which image you voted for and why.

A. Sweden

A portrait of Queen Josefina in 1825 – Queen Josefina born as Joséphine of Leuchtenberg in Italy in 1807, was the Queen consort of Oscar I of Sweden and Norway. She was very popular both within the court and with the public and was involved in charity and reforms in Sweden. Her marriage that included the birth of 5 children was happy untill she found out about her husband's unfaithfulness. Josefina died in Stockholm in 1876.




B. Bukhara

Mohammed Alim Khan, the last Emir of the Emirate of Bukhara in Central Asia is pictured in a photograph from 1911. A descendant of Genghis Khan, the Emir reigned from 1911 to 1920.

Her Imperial Highness, Princess Neslişah Osmanoğlu is a granddaugther of the last Ottoman Caliph Abdülmecid II and the last Ottoman Sultan Mehmed VI. The Princess grew up in Nice, France after her family was exiled. She married Prince Muhammad Abdel Moneim of Egypt in 1940.

Queen Soraya, born Soraya Esfandiari-Bakhtiari in a formal portrait. Soraya became the second wife of Shah Muhammad Reza Pahlavi of Iran on February 12, 1951 until the couple's divorce in 1958.

Queen Zein al-Sharaf, wife of King Talal and mother of King Hussein of Jordan. The Queen played an integral part in the political development of her Kingdom, taking part in the writing of the 1952 Constitution which gave full rights to the women of Jordan and creating the first women's union in the country.

The young King Faisal II ca. 1940s. Faisal was the last king of Iraq, reigning from 1939 to 1958 when he was killed along with other members of his family during a coup d'état.

King Haakon VII and his wife Queen Maud of Norway on their official coronation portait in 1905. King Haakon VII reigned from 1905 to 1957.

I can't even choose, there are too many good pictures... Great poll.

This one of Princess Charlotte and her children I've never seen before. Amazing.

I like the picture of LALA Fatima because she is related to the Moroccan Monarchy.

This is a great poll. I don't think I can decide!

Most of the portraits were good, a hard choice between: Sweden, GBritain, Egypt, Iran, Spain and The netherlands.

Iran & Egypt portraits are beautiful, difficult choice between the two.

Well...It's pretty difficult to choice only one of those wonderful pics you posted, people! The "Historical poll" is actually more hard for me than modern polls ones! :biggrin: However, I've already decided. And for the first time, I think that the "Historical February poll" is related to my decission at the "contemporary" February poll. Of course I cannot said why I voted in such a why HERE...cause my choice will be known at once ! :whistling: So, just wait until the end...

Was a difficult choice for me. I remained a long time between three photos.

One photograph stood out head and shoulders for me :)

The pic was/is very special to us in the light of the Juliana Commemoration Year,
as it is the 100th anniversary of her birth on april 30th.

Queen Soraya came in a close second. Iran and the Netherlands were tied for the longest time, I was wondering which one would make it to the top.

I loved the picture of Soraya. She was really beautiful.
