Col. Henry Abel Smith and Lady May Cambridge - 1931

On 24 October 1931 Henry Abel Smith married Lady May Cambridge. The bride was know as Princess Mary of Teck until 1916 and was the daughter of prince Alexander of Teck, later known as the Earl of Athlone and HRH Princess Alice of Albany, daughter of Queen Victoria's youngest son Leopold.

Yep, the bridesmaid does indeed look familiar! I wonder how many times the Queen was a bridesmaid in total.

You can understand the huge waiting crowds in this case. In a pre-television age this was a chance to see masses of British and foreign royalty as the bride was the neice of Queen Mary and the granddaughter of prince Leopold of Albany. They would be able to see the Yorks, and little bridesmaid Elizabeth, and other members of the Royal family like the Duke of Kent.

This was the wedding in which Prince Gustav Adolf of Sweden was introduced by his sister Princess Ingrid to her fellow bridesmaid Princess Sybilla of Saxe-Coburg Gotha. The couple got on well and later married. Sybilla was cousin to Lady May.
