Craigowan Lodge is increasingly becoming The Queen's first residence when she arrives in Scotland. Instead of interrupting the tourist season early, she stays in the lodge for a few days while they close up the gift shops and do their final security check

Delnadamph Lodge is on a remote location on the estate, about 8 miles from the castle, and away from the main highway. Although the Lodge is old, it is in shambles. The Queen offered it to Charles and Diana, but Diana didn't have any interest in the place. Now that Charles is married to Camilla, he is restoring the place into a nice (ultra private) 12 bedroom lodge.

The surrounding woods are all parkland now, and forever protected from development.

I think it was quite interesting to get the historical perspective on Balmoral.

Besides Queen Ena of Spain, does anyone know of other royals born at Balmoral? I believe Princess Beatrice, Queen Victoria's daughter and the mother of Queen Ena, also gave birth to a son at Balmoral.

The TV programme "Balmoral" is now back on BBC iPlayer and will expire at 11.08 am on Saturday 9th January.

When Tsar Nicholas II and his Alexandra visited Balmoral in the 1890's (I wanna say 1896) Queen Victoria ordered special wooden huts or cottages to be built near the castle for the Tsar's staff.
Does anyone know if they are still there?

Wildfires strike Balmoral after record April heat - Yahoo! News

Britain was battling rare wildfire outbreaks on Wednesday following the warmest April on record, with Queen Elizabeth II's Balmoral country estate among the areas hit.

Hopefully they'll be able to get the fires contained. I don't think the Queen wants to see another one of her favorite homes go up in flames. :eek:

I'm sorry to say that I've never really appreciated Balmoral - mainly the architecture.
