Princess Anne's visit to the Antarctic, January 2007

Anne to perk up a penguin

PRINCESS Anne is going where no Royal has ever set foot — to walk with penguins in Antarctica.
Anne will become the most southerly Royal ever as she visits a British base on the continent — where temperatures are MINUS 30C.

What about Prince Philip's visit in January 1957?

According to my research he visited many islands a long way south but didn't actually go to Antarctica itself.

I have a book which shows the route of his 56-57 three month tour on a map and it indicates a visit to Graham Land in Antarctica. I'm at work and don't have it available right now, though, so I'll look again when I'm home.

I did find this online link:

Queen Sonja of Norway visited the South Pole last year if I am not mistaken.

Princess Anne inspects Robert Scott's hut in Antarctica, during a visit to the South Pole in 2002. The emotional last letter written by Scott to his wife as he lay freezing and starving to death in the Antarctic is to go on display for the first time this month.

Princess Anne (or so says the caption )

Living as a princess must not be easy, but this is something that is definitely a perk.
