MAfan , it was the war , the Belgian men were or soldiers or prisonners , they were away from home and the King has a mistress, the governess of his children and she was pregnant. The 3 children of Queen Astrid were Grand Duchesse of Luxembourg and Baudouin and Albert Kings of the Belgians.

Albert Ier chose to stay with his Army and it was the good choice. His son Leopold III did the same choice for WWII and it was a bad choice.. that's history. Queen Elisabeth was a nurse during WWI and later started the Famous Concours de musique Reine Elisabeth , she played violon . She was the best Queen of the Belgians we ever had and have.

MAfan , your avatar represents King Albert Ier and I choose Queen Elisabeth because of her Cartier tiara the RF lost because it was sold after King's Léopold death.
