It's a mantilla, very old spanish tradition.
Women wear it at special occasions, like a wedding and also (i think) at funerals.
I wonder why the Spanish Royals do not wear hats. Is there a correct reason for this as they seem to be the only ones. All the other Royal Ladies have wonderful hats but the Spanish Queen plus her two daughters and daughter-in-law don't bother. Many of their outfits would look really "finished" with a matching head piece.the day we'll first see letizia wearing a hat i'll throw a party and invite all of you
I once heard that Queen Sofia hates wearing hats. That's why she doesn't wear hats for official engagements and that's also why the other Spanish Ladies don't wear hats.
Sofia doesn't do the classical hats that we see on the Dutch or British royals but she has done headwear in the past, eg on the occasion of Royal Weddings.
Looks like she doesn't like it but if protocol forces her to find a solution she'll come up with one
