Do you know the hat which Queen Sofia and Princess Elena wear at Prince Felippe wed in May?What do they call it?I mean the name of it.Is it the Spanish tradional Royal Wedding hat?It looks like one of the crown of Egypt Queen.

It's a mantilla, very old spanish tradition.
Women wear it at special occasions, like a wedding and also (i think) at funerals.

I love the mantilla, very elegant & traditional.

Princess Letizia has worn the mantilla on 3 occasions so far:

I really adore this accessorie
i find it so glamourous, so noble, very stylish
Infanta Elena wore one at her borther Wedding with an unforgotable gown ...

Is it more religious thing or traditional thing?? coz it's remind me of Muslim's veil. Queen Rania and Moroccan royal lady will wear veil on religious ceremony..

the day we'll first see letizia wearing a hat i'll throw a party and invite all of you

I wonder why the Spanish Royals do not wear hats. Is there a correct reason for this as they seem to be the only ones. All the other Royal Ladies have wonderful hats but the Spanish Queen plus her two daughters and daughter-in-law don't bother. Many of their outfits would look really "finished" with a matching head piece.

I once heard that Queen Sofia hates wearing hats. That's why she doesn't wear hats for official engagements and that's also why the other Spanish Ladies don't wear hats.
Maybe one day Letizia will be invited to a wedding/other event where hats belong to the dresscode. That would be great. :D

Sofia doesn't do the classical hats that we see on the Dutch or British royals but she has done headwear in the past, eg on the occasion of Royal Weddings.

Looks like she doesn't like it but if protocol forces her to find a solution she'll come up with one ;)

Well the solutions that she finds are great in my book. Just wish it happened more often... ;)

I love the Mantilla , Queen Sophia and Infanta Elena always look so elegant an beautiful. :flowers:

I also love the pics of Letizia wearing mantillas. It was so regal and elegant. Infanta Cristina wore a hat during Felipe and Letizia's wedding if I'm not mistaken.

Thank you so much for this thread. I am amayzed at these beautiful Spanish Mantillas. My very American mother wore one for her wedding, and I have always been partial to them. It is wonderful to see the roayls wearing some of the most beautiful matillas in world, I think.

Beautiful and elegant as they are why are they always in black (except when attending an audience with the Pope)?

:previous:

The colour of the Mantilla demonstrates the marital status of a woman. Black stands for married, white for virgin.

In one of these threads (sorry I could not find it), I saw a very beautiful Spanish Lady attending a Royal wedding in a PurpleMantilla and Purple lace gown. What would that signify? (for the record, my mother wore white to her wedding! :)

Still amazes me how beautiful Sofia looks in the Mantilla. She wears it well. :flowers:
