but what dresses could work on a royal event

and do you think that royal at such gala evenst should wear dresses that are not so long´

Like Uma Thurman at the Oscars 2004

i do not think so royal gala even´ts should be with lomg dresses down to the floor
Being royals limits your range of 'sexiness' the dresses are pretty much conservative half the time...if they try something daring they'll be criticized...

or how about these dreeses
I think any of the dresses you selected from the various official Royal "formal" events would work well at the Oscars, although I myself would detest anyone who shows up in a dress like Caroline's as I can't stand it. Many of the dresses the Royals wear are meant to grab attention as well, so I don't really see much difference in when a Royal dresses and when a Celeb dresses other then the "daring" issue. Royals have to be much more careful in selecting a formal, as they don't want to look dowdy but they can't portray a sexpot image either (case in point: the Madeleine red Nobel Dress) While the dress looked great on her, she caught a lot of slack from Royal followers for showing to much.

I think most people equate looking regal with leaving a little something to the imagination. Maybe that's a problem. Young Royals should be allowed to wear what they like too, should they not? The older Royals tend to go for formals and clothing that are more covering, simply because as you get older that is a more sensible style. But if you look at the fashions popular with todays youth, the younger Royals are in a tough place...many of the fashions they can't immulate or try because they would be blasted by the media and the conservative Royal followers. I'm not saying I want to see Princess Beatrice or Princess Eugenie (etc. etc. etc.) out there wearing barely there tops and little to no skirts, but getting them out of the boxy, boring outfits they tend to wear at official functions (as all young royals do!) would be nice. Madeleine's dress at last year's Nobel was absolutetly gorgeous, but it was so matronly, and in my opinion something much too old for someone of a mere 21 years of age to wear. She looked beautiful, but old. The red dress suited her age and the trends of the year much much more!

Now finally-HATS! I love hats, I wear them whenever I get the chance or find an excuse to...I don't think it's old fashioned, but I do think it's very "elite class." Most people don't wear hats at even Easter, but the "elite" class tends to wear them to many social events. I, personally, hope they don't stop wearing them, as I rather enjoy seeing the different looks and trends. Maybe one day it will be picked up by the legions of others! (I'm talking hats like we see most of the royals wear, not hats like baseball caps etc.)

what about Diana,Princess of Wales, Countess of Wessex, Sarah,Duchess of York and Princess Royal if you would show like examples same Princess Diana did.

Royal vs. Oscar Style

I agree with Britters. Most (though not all) star actresses rely on sex appeal as part (to a greater or lesser degree) of what qualifies them for fame and fortune. Royals don't need to so they can be discrete and go for elegance and taste. If they have the figure or face, they need to show it to some extent. Crown Princess Victoria dresses down a bit too much. She'd be sensational with a whisper more of make up.

Charlize Theron's 2004 Oscar gown is way over the top for royals, even Princess Madeleine. Jennifer Garner's is what I could see royals wearing — and she looks comfortable in it :) . Naomi's and Renee's are a bit too decollete and slinky as are Scarlett's and Nicole's and some of those stars don't look very comfortable in those dresses either. Kelly Lynch's bouffant gown is gorgeous  and a royal would do well in it with a matching wrap for discretion.

Royals do need to look comfortable when dressing up and their dresses need to fit. Many actresses on the red carpets do look awkward and sometimes the dresses look awkward on them. Royals really can't afford to be awkward or look awkward because we're supposed to look up to them as role models in matters of style and taste.

flashy jewelry is not the same as a lot or as grand would you say?
thinkning of Queen Silvia does she break the rule 6

Yes, perhaps. But many royal watchers would be disappointed if they didn´t get a chance to see the Queen all dressed up and without some of the well-admired jewels of the SRF.

do we got any memebrs that feels that royals should wear the style of dresses that Celebrities have. If so why so you think they should and what is it the royal dresses lack?

alright.....i'm blinded by very bright teal/green/shouldnt be on anyone's body/dress...yuk
and the beige dress u know the one with the supppppppppper long neck line. the neck line goes to her bellybutton another yuk..last one and it deals with another beige dress-i just have to write the dress is calling"talk to my chest plz" why do i say that-just look at the neck line

I think Mary would look great in some of the eastern designers that Rania patronises.

Letizia would wear Catherine Walkers classic evening wear well. Some of the outfits she has worn overwhelm her small frame somewhat. The look that CW developed for Diana is classic and would suit any princess.

I would also like to see Queen B patronise some of the designers that QEII wears. Some of QB's clothes are seriously OTT (IMO).

Catherine Walker for Letizia

You know, I think that would go with Mathilde as well, if it didn't have the split down the front. There have been a few outfits of her's with a similar neckline. :)

Australian designer Collete Dinnegan for Mary.

Question

Who are the top names in evening wear today? Pret a porter and couture?

Who are the top names in classic day wear?

So much stuff is way over the top for royalty.

I think Queen Elizabeth might look good in this white dress Julie Andrews wore to the Academy Awards this year.

And Queen Silvia in a dress Oprah Winfrey wore to the awards show. Maybe not this particuar colour, but the cut would be nice.

For Crown Princess Mary, the gold dress worn by Patricia Clarkson or the green and gold dress Sienna Miller wore.

The black, lacy cocktail dress worn by Faith Hill for Princess Martha Louise.

And for Crown Princess Mathilde, the white sheath dress (someone suggested this above), also worn by Faith Hill.

For Princess Letizia, the black thirties-inspired dress worn by Penelope Cruz, but perhaps not so lowly cut in the chest region. Or a similar one worn by Sarah Jessica Parker.

Hardy Amies had been designing dresses for Queen Elizabeth II for the last 50 years. He died on 2003.

are there any royal that you think has worn something to Hollywood
and if so why was it to Hollywood?

HM Queen choses young man who making dressmaker for Queen's wardrobes since Hardy Aimes's death in 2003 but HM Queen still missed him lots! but Queen choses young man to making good clothes!

Meaning of Pret a Porter

"Ready-to-wear."

Gayle King
Giuliana DePandi
Lara Spencer
Frida Hallgren
Drew Barrymore
Virginia Madsen

Emily Deschanel; Zooey Deschanel
Sandra Oh
Oprah Winfrey

Annette Bening dress in a other colour could work on maxima

Frida Hallgren dress could work for a pregnent princess but in aother colour

there are some bare backs do you think that fashion is okay for royals
how much covered do they need to be
would you say Lara Spencer dress is cut to low in the bust line for a royal to wear

Oprah Winfrey dress for grand duches M-T but yet again in a other colour

I like Sophie Okonedo´s dress for several young royals. Maybe Beatrice or Eugenie in a few years. Or Marie-Christine even.

Annette Bening´s dress for Silvia or Caroline. Maxima too. A different color. Good thinking, Josefine.

A higher bustline on Virginia Madsen´s dress and it would be good on Madeleine.

Great photos. So hard to decide on these things. I like Kate Winslet´s dress. Don´t know which royal would look best in it. Maybe Mary.

the dress caroline wears in post 41 is that to much clevage or the dress madeleine wore at nobel 2001 does that show to much?

how is it with bare back
can royal dresses have a bare back and if yes how much does it need to be covered

Well for me personally i like what CP.Mary wore ,the combinaison of the deep blue long skirt and the pink top,but i find that it would be likewise elegant and beautiful if the back was a bit covered like how did mathilde wearing the same style of top.

I don't know, maybe it's only me,but this kind of nude back reminds more a sexy hollywood star than a royal, and a royal should be glamour not sexy;) !
