this is the grandeur of Royal Family of Thailand... i remembered Queen Beatrix was a bit flustered to receive this kind of welcome, where people actually went on their knee to greet you.

btw, is it explained why the royal ladies didn't wear any tiara on their gala dinner?

Spanish king, queen wrap state visit to Thailand

BANGKOK (AFP) - Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia wrapped up a three-day state visit to Thailand with accompanying business leaders pressing for contracts with a major Thai public works project.
The royal visit was to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the coronation of revered Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who at 78 is the world's longest-reigning monarch. The couple will leave the kingdom for Spain late Thursday.
Earlier in the day, the king attended a Thai-Spanish business forum and called on business leaders of both countries to expand bilateral trade.
"The level of bilateral trade is not what it should be," the king told the seminar.

Visit Kings reactivated Spanish presence in Vietnam and Thailand

The Kings of Spain today concluded a visit from State to Vietnam and Thailand that has laid the the foundations to intensify the political dialogue and the insufficient economic presence and cultural Spanish in these two countries. On the base of a ' excellent atmosphere políticá - in words of the Spanish minister of Outer Subjects, Miguel Moratinos Angel -, this trip from the Kings to Southeast Asia has revitalized a cooperation with Vietnam practically suspended and has opened to the door to essential agreements with Thailand for the Spanish investment and the collaboration as opposed to the organized crime. The importance of the economic component of both visits marked the agenda of the Kings, to those who it accompanied so much in Hanoi as in Bangkok an outstanding Spanish enterprise delegation.

King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia have been getting a taste for life in the orient as they visit two of Southeast Asia's most beautiful countries. The Spanish royals brought their three-day tour, which has taken in both Vietnam and Thailand, to an end on Thursday when they congratulated the world's longest reigning monarch on the 60th anniversary of his coronation.

Their trip began on Monday afternoon when the couple was greeted by President Tran Duc Luong in Hanoi. After a spectacular welcome at the presidential palace, the pair moved on to the Martyrs' Monument, where they made a floral offering, before visiting the Van Mieu "Temple Of Literature" University, which was built in the year 1070 in honour of Confuscius.

Don Juan Carlos and his wife were also treated to a state banquet in the Hanoi Opera House, before moving on to Thailand where they met up with King Bhumibol, who came to power in 1946, and his wife Queen Sikrit. A troupe of dancers in traditional dress threw flower petals at the VIP visitors' feet as they made their way through the airport with their hosts.

Spain's head of state is unlikely to forget the lavish hospitality he has been treated to during his time in Southeast Asia. Indeed the only regret the statuesque royal might be left with is that he didn't have more time to enjoy the many sights and sounds that surrounded him. With its numerous beaches, breath-taking jungles and rich cultural life, Thailand has become one of the world's hottest tourist destinations, while Vietnam, which likewise caters to both history buffs and sun-worshippers, has also earned a reputation as one of the Pacific's most fascinating countries.

Is this time really the second time they visit Thailand? The queens seem very close to each others.

I believe tiaras were not worn in the gala dinner because they are a tradition in the European monarchies, but they are not really an Asian thing.

If there was a gala dinner in the royal palace in Madrid offered to the king and queen of Thailand, I am absolutely sure that both queens would be wearing tiaras.

As I said, tiaras were intorduced in the court of Siam by the Europeans, but they are not itself a Thai tradition.
