On July 20th, Chulabhorn Mahidol is opening the European conference "Marine Natural Products", which is taking place at the University of Porto (Portugal). The Princess has a PhD in Organic Chemistry and her thesis is on natural products from medicinal plants in Thailand. She is now the President of the Chulabhorn Research Institute (CRI), an internationally regarded research institute.

After inaugurating this conference, she visited the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto and then headed to Lisboa, where she's staying till the end of the week.

Here's an article about the visit to IPATIMUD:

The Kamlangjai Project, under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha, has launched a diary featuring the princess' images, her advice on life and selected entrants of a logo design contest in a bid to raise funds for the needy.

The designer of the diary's cover said his logo design featured two hugging hearts - grey and orange coloured. The grey colour symbolised sadness, while the orange colour meant warmth, and it was also the princess' colour, he explained. The Kamlangjai Project was established in 2006 by Princess Bajrakitiyabha with the aim of offering support to the needy, especially female prison inmates, children, youths and others deprived of opportunities.

HRH the Princess Marsi Paribatra (born 1931) is a distant relative of the King of Thailand.
She is the daughter of the late Prince and Princess Chumbhot, who established the old teakwood Suan Pakkad Palace just north of downtown Bangkok.
Marsi spent most of her adult life living in Europe, studying and then teaching art history in both Thailand and Spain. From the Renaissance through the centuries towards modernism, her art evokes many of the great European masters.
The exhibition in the Hall of Mirrors at Siam Paragon includes some 38 paintings from a career that produced 100-plus artworks of the Princess. Organised by the recently set up Marsi Foundation, the paintings span her early career to the early millennium, when the elderly princess was forced to retire from painting due to a debilitating stroke.

Thai minister calls for monarchy reform | Radio Netherlands Worldwide

Thailand's Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya has called for a review of the role of the Thai monarchy. He said that reform should be discussed following the country's worst civil violence in almost 20 years. It would include a smaller role for the royal family and greater involvement in the political arena for the country's rural poor.

Christian training centre for the blind opened in Pattaya with royal patronage

The Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol of Thailand and Queen Sylvia of Sweden attended the inauguration of a Christian vocational training centre Father Ray School, a specialized institution for the blind. The property is located in the district of Pattaya, Cholburi province, and boasts the royal patronage of Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

The Queen of Sweden attended the opening ceremony - held on 8 April - because the northern European royal house has contributed to the construction of the building. Currently it houses 144 students, from nursery to secondary schools. After completing this course, students can make their entrance into any of the institutions of the country, having received a preparation equivalent to that of able-bodied pupils.
The school prepares blind students for the agricultural sector, in manual work and sport. - AsiaNews.it

Dear Purple

Since I have read all the pages in this post. And you seem to be the most likly to answer me, I'm posting this question? I'm not very good at these forum things. WHY?? Is there such a variation in spelling of the Thai names? Namely the King number 9. And the kings-sons-son?? The baby second to the throwns name is TEE. Not DA. I would not bring this up, but, I am married to a Thai and have a son 4 months old. Named after the child. I seached the internet and found his name as Tee. ( My sons name is Gollatee ) Several web pages list his name this way. Then I find almost the same pages with his name starting Da. The Kings name is the same way. My wife and every other Thai will fight you over this spelling thing..!! They say it is wrong. Has anybody got an answer for this? Is it lost in translation or something? ( Also just for you. It is rumored widly among the Thais that there was a video of the Princes' young movie star wife.) I was writing more to you. But I don't know who will see this. I don't want to start rumors. Even tho it is well heard in Thailand.

Thai king's health has improved, queen says (Reuters India)

Quote:
The health of Thailand's hospitalised 82-year-old king, the world's longest-serving monarch, has "substantially improved" but further treatment is required, Queen Sirikit said in a radio address on Wednesday.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Thailand's sole unifying figure through decades of on-off political upheaval, has been receiving physical rehabilitation in a Bangkok hospital, where he has been treated since Sept. 19 for fatigue and lung inflammation.
