In Thailand, a Campaign to Purify Internet of Royal Insults
Technicians in the war room have blocked 70,000 Internet pages over the past four years, and the vast majority — about 60,000 — were banned for insults to the monarchy, according to Mr. Surachai. Each blocked page requires a court order, a request that judges have never turned down, Mr. Surachai said.
Because the monarchy remains a taboo subject in Thailand and is often discussed elliptically, the motives of those who attack the royal family remain largely a matter of speculation. After his six decades on the throne, public protests against the king are unheard of in Thailand. And not even the most strident anti-establishment protesters would openly call themselves republicans.

New group of academics to protect Thai monarchy
Assoc Prof Banjerd Singkaneti, dean of the Law School of National Institute of Development Administration (Nida), said that more than 20 academics from five universities have formed a group called "Sayam Prachapiwat" (Siamese People's Great Development).
The group would be officially launched today (Friday) at the institute.
Banjerd said the group's academic were concerned about the ongoing "monopoly of Thai politics" by a group of capitalists and politicians, as well as "the crisis of freedom and ethics".
He said the group would make its views on certain important issues, such as constitutional amendment, reforms for society, laws and politics.

BBC News - Calls for change over Thai 'royal insult' law
A heated debate is under way in Thailand over the application of a law designed to protect the monarchy, reports BBC South East Asia correspondent Rachel Harvey. The lese-majeste law, or article 112 of Thailand's criminal code, protects the most senior members of the royal family from insult or threat.

Thais split by fierce royal insult law debate | My Sinchew
Abused in the street and shunned by her family, a Thai teenager will answer a police summons this week over claims she insulted the revered monarchy amid vehement debate about the kingdom's lese majeste law. Abhinya Sawatvarakorn, 19, who faces possible arrest Saturday after being accused of making critical comments on Facebook two years ago, is the latest symbol of the ferocity of feeling around the issue in the deeply divided nation.
Known by her internet alias Kanthoop, the teenager says she has been the victim of a witch hunt that has seen her barred from several universities and publicly vilified.
[...]Lese majeste, or article 112 of the Thai criminal code, is designed to protect senior royals from insult, but academics say it has been politicised in recent years.
Many of those charged have been linked to the "Red Shirt" movement, supporters of ousted former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, and other critics of the previous establishment-backed government.
The number of people charged with the offence has surged since Thaksin was deposed in a 2006 coup, making the law itself increasingly the subject of debate -- even though powerful figures such as the army chief have suggested dissenters should leave the country.
David Streckfuss, an independent academic and expert on lese majeste, said the current public attention to the issue would have been "absolutely unimaginable" last year.
[...]
The royal family is an extremely sensitive subject in Thailand, with 84-year-old King Bhumibol Adulyadej revered as a demi-god by many.
There were 122 lese majeste cases sent for prosecution from January to October 2011, which Streckfuss said was in line with the level seen in 2009.
But in 2010, when the country was rocked by deadly anti-government protests by the Red Shirts, there was a spike of 478 cases.
Thai academic Thitinan Pongsudhirak said the measure had left the country gripped by a "climate of fear" and warned reformists can become "radicalised" when debate is shut down.

Thailand: Courts Denying Bail in Lese Majeste Cases | Human Rights Watch
Thai courts are refusing bail for people charged with the crime of lese majeste for apparently political reasons, Human Rights Watch said today. Thai law criminalizes the expression of peaceful opinions deemed offensive to the institution of the monarchy.

84-year-old Thai king recovers from bleed on brain | Fox News
BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand's 84-year-old king has recovered from minor bleeding around the brain, the royal palace said Friday, but still canceled a day trip to western Thailand. It would have been his fourth such recent excursion outside the hospital where he has stayed for more than two-and-a-half years.
