Summary of an article

According to an article in Svenska Dagbladet, many Thai people appreciate that the King and Queen will not only visit the tourist cities – but have also arranged visits to ordinary Thai villages that were severely struck by the catastrophe – something that hasn’t been given as much “media” abroad as the tourists affected.

The King will donate 100 fishing boats to families in the Nam Kaem area, who lost their fishing boats and thereby their income from fishing. Some of the King’s private friends will donate another 100 fishing boats.

The Thai authorities are putting a lot of weight to this visit, perhaps because Thailand was the biggest attraction for Swedish tourists before the tsunami, but also because it’s the King’s own initiative to give of himself by getting involved in both the official relations between the countries and restoring the trust for Thailand as a tourist destination for Swedes – and also taking interest and commitment together with the Queen for the Thai people. The King of Thailand, Bhumibol, has made his private plane and a Rolls Royce at the disposal of the King and Queen during their visit.

Sweden's King and Queen toured Thailand's tsunami-battered coastline Friday, thanking residents for helping Scandinavian vacationers who survived the Dec. 26 disaster and offering assistance with rehabilitation efforts. Sweden suffered some 113 fatalities in the killer waves _ more than any other nation outside the Indian Ocean region. Some 439 others are still missing. They were among thousands of Swedes who had flocked to the area's tropical beach resorts to escape the cold northern European winter. Charter flights carrying Swedish tourists, suspended after the tsunami, resumed only recently. King Carl XVI Gustaf and his wife Queen Silvia, toured beaches on Phuket island, Thailand's main Andaman Sea resort area, on the second day of their visit.

"They're here to say thank you for what you did," said Swedish Ambassador Jonas Hafstrom, referring to the much-praised efforts by Thais to rescue and treat foreign visitors caught up in the tragedy. He said he was the first foreign ambassador on the scene after the Dec. 26 tragedy, arriving by evening that day, and that "everyone really reached out, even if they didn't have money or resources, they were there."

The Swedish royal couple visited a camp Friday for displaced Thai tsunami survivors, which hosts a rehabilitation center for children traumatized by the events. The center is supported in part by the World Childhood Foundation, a group founded in 1999 by Queen Silvia to help exploited and abused children worldwide. She and the king were greeted by a marching band and presented with drawings done by children at the camp. The casually dressed couple proceeded next to a center for rebuilding fishing boats, where the king handed over a letter of intent to donate 100 traditional long-tailed boats to help restore the local fishing fleet that was devastated by the tsunami. Swedish companies will purchase 100 more. The king chatted quietly with fisherman, asking what they had lost before he posed for a group photo with them. At the royal couple's next stop, the focus switched to Swedish victims of the disaster at a resort in Khao Lak, one of the worst-hit Thai beach areas. Many Swedes were lost at the Blue Village Pakarang Resort, where a mourning ceremony by the sea was held.

The king, who is honorary chairman of the World Scout Foundation, was welcomed to the ceremony by Boy and Girl Scouts. Earlier he presented the leader of the Thai scouting movement with US$40,000 from Swedish scouting organizations to help local scouts who suffered in the tragedy.

According to people who attended Thursday's ceremony, both Swedish and Thai musicians played traditional music at the ceremony, at which the king presented a wreath and the queen wept. The bodies of 5,395 people have been recovered in Thailand since the tragedy, and 2,991 people are listed as missing. The Swedish couple were also scheduled to visit a disaster victim identification center and bestow royal decorations on the governors of tsunami-battered provinces before dining Friday evening with Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. On Saturday they will meet members of the Swedish expatriate community, before departing for Stockholm early Sunday morning.

From HELLO:

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden visited disaster-affected areas in Thailand's southern provinces of Phuket and Phangnga on Friday. The royal couple have been in Thailand on a four-day visit to show their gratitude for the hospitality shown to Swedes caught in the tsunami that struck Asia late last year.

After touring areas ravaged by the disaster and attending a ceremony of mourning for victims, Carl and Silvia visited Bangkok's Phuket hospital where they met and sympathized with some of the Swedish survivors who are still recovering from their injuries in the Thai hospital. Later, they also spoke with doctors and nurses expressing their gratitude for their indefatigable efforts during the crisis.

The Swedish royals met earlier this week with Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit to personally thank them for the help, support and hospitality extended to Swedish nationals since the tragedy.

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia wrap up their Thai visit on Saturday. They are the highest-level dignitaries to visit the tsunami-affected provinces since the fatal waves struck on December 26.

No, it is not a State Visit - this is just an official visit to thank the Thai people and volunteers etc for their incredible job after the tsunami.
