Thai king asks courts to intervene

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) -- Thailand's influential king asked the country's top courts to resolve an impending political crisis over elections that have failed to fill a new Parliament, saying Tuesday he would not intervene to appoint an interim government.
He also criticized the recent elections, in which the ruling party ran unopposed in many constituencies because of an opposition boycott, as undemocratic.
"We have to find a way to solve the problem," King Bhumibol Adulyadej said in a rare public address. "Having an election with only one candidate running is impossible. This is not a democracy

Thai king refuses to appoint new PM

BANGKOK (AFP) - Thailand's widely respected king rejected the opposition's calls to appoint a new prime minister to end the country's long-running political crisis while branding recent elections undemocratic.
In his first public remarks on the issue, King Bhumibol Adulyadej rebuffed opposition calls that he intervene after mass protests forced Thaksin Shinawatra to announce he would not take the top post in a new government.

Thai king urges top judges to end political crisis
BANGKOK, April 25 (Reuters) - Thailand's constitutional king urged top judges on Tuesday to help end the country's political crisis after an inconclusive general election left it unlikely to elect a new prime minister and form a government.
In a rare intervention, King Bhumibol Adulyadej told senior judges he summoned to his seaside palace in Hua Hin he could not produce a solution to a crisis he said would put the country in jeopardy.
"It is a mess," the 78-year-old king, who is due to celebrate his 60th anniversary on throne on June, told Supreme Court judges after an opposition boycott of a snap election and by-elections left some parliamentary seats empty.
"You'd better discuss with others what solutions are available, otherwise the country will be in jeopardy," the world's longest living monarch told them in meetings broadcast on television.

Queen bestows quality emblem for Thai silk

The Agriculture Ministry will use a peacock emblem bestowed by Her Majesty the Queen to authenticate Thai silk and protect the reputation of the fine cloth from imitation fabrics. The Queen has spent years trying to preserve traditional methods of weaving silk that are considered part of the national heritage, caretaker Agriculture Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan said.

The quality of Thai silk had not previously been certified officially. This lack of standardisation had made it hard to maintain quality. The peacock emblem would be a guarantee of quality, make Thai silk more competitive globally and protect silk farmers from exploitation.

The national silkworm commission will scrutinise new criteria dividing Thai silk into four grades based on specific silk types and production processes, including weaving and dying, she said.
The oval peacock emblem will be in four colours indicating quality _ gold (premium, traditional methods), silver (classic Thai, specific silkworm breeds), blue (Thai silk, allows chemical dyes) and green (blends with other fabrics).

King to get rain patents

The National Research Council will present local and international rain-making patents to the King now that registration has been completed. The Royal Household Bureau earlier asked the council to seek registration of the patents.
The Intellectual Property Department issued the local patent on June 2, 2003.
The National Research Council sought international registration with the European Patent Office, which issued patent 1491088 for the King's ''Weather Modification by Royal Rainmaking Technology'' on Oct 12, 2005, council secretary-general Anont Boonyaratavej said. The council is seeking an audience with the King to give him the patents.

King to undergo spine operation

His Majesty the King will undergo an operation at Siriraj Hospital on Thursday to treat lumbar spinal stenosis, the Royal Household Bureau said yesterday.
Lumbar spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back that can cause pressure on nerves to the legs. This year, on May 3, a team of doctors from Siriraj Hospital and several other hospitals held a meeting and concluded that a stenosis enlargement operation was needed.
The King suffered a fall while he was walking inside the Chitrlada Palace on June 24. Doctors found His Majesty had skin abrasions, bruises on the right side of his back and shoulder and a minor fracture to a rib.
