Does anyone know why is the Queen involving in a lot of visits which are regarded as "State Visits" while the King is staying away in Thailand? Is she paying the visits on behalf of him?I don't think i have seen him on State Visits for a long time.

For the Rassia visit, Her majesty paid on behalf of HM the King, as well as the visit to China in October 2000.

The last State Visit of HM the King was the visit to Laos in November 1994.

In the early period, HM intentionally don't want to go out of The Kingdom of Thailand. His Majesty once said (as i remember to his foreign friend) that, “My place in this world is in the midst of my people, all the people of Thailand.”. So he did take any state visit any more. But as time pass, I think the reasons are almost about his age and health.

Queen's birthday speech

During an address to high ranking officials and her subjects who sought an audience with her on August 11th to present their birthday wishes, which was also televised live across the nation, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit called for the Thai nation to preserve their natural resources, focusing on forest and water sources.

The Queen especially mentioned His Majesty the King’s determination in preserving mangrove forests saying that they are nurseries for baby aqua animals and sources of food chain for local communities. The Queen encouraged people to plant more trees and take good care of the existing ones citing example of landslides and bad floods caused by deforestation.

The Queen also stressed her concern over fresh water for consumption for the whole nation and encouraged people to realize and preserve their natural resources. Their Majesties the King and Queen of Thailand have been devoting their time working hard for the development of the nation which includes encouraging natural resources conservation.

Queen opens Royal Project Festival in honour of King

Her Majesty the Queen, accompanied by HRH Princess Somsavali, yesterday presided over the opening ceremony of the Royal Project Festival.

They spent more than an hour visiting all the booths and buying produce from farmers.

Held for 19 consecutive years, the festival is larger than ever this year and occupies an area of more than 4,000 square metres at CentralWorld shopping centre in Bangkok.

Its theme is "His Majesty's kindness is like a big tree's branches that provide shelter for Thailand" and celebrates the King's 80th birthday in December.

Hundreds of people involved with the Royal Projects, the Royal Chitralada Project and Projects under the Royal Initiative gathered to welcome the Queen and the Princess.

Among the foods purchased by the pair were radicchio and sweet corn - the latter was sold out as the Princess took all of them.

Coastal patrol boats launched by royals

The Royal Thai Navy is preparing to present three brand-new coastal patrol boats to His Majesty the King in honour of his 80th birthday and in recognition of his considerable shipbuilding talent.

Her Majesty the Queen and HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn yesterday (Sep 7,2007) attended a ceremony to launch two of the new patrol boats at Marsun Co's dockyard in Samut Prakan's Muang district.

Also attending were Privy Council President Prem Tinsulanonda, Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont, Navy chief Admiral Sathiraphan Keyanont and Army chief General Sonthi Boonyaratglin.

The ceremony combined both Thai and Western elements.

It began with a blessing by monks, and then the Princess anointed the Tor 992 and Tor 993 boats. After that, Her Majesty cut a rope so champagne bottles could swing onto the bows of the boats and send them floating down the Chao Phya River.

Many captains from France, the United Kingdom and the United States witnessed the launch.

Her Majesty told Sathiraphan that His Majesty liked the three boats very much. "They have done better than what have been required. Thailand's shipbuilding industry can advance further".

Sathiraphan said the boats would be adorned with decorative lights when they sail to Klaikangwon Palace in Prachuap Khiri Khan on His Majesty's birthday.

Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej, left, and Queen Sirikit look at giant swing from a pavilion as they preside over the ceremony celebrating the renovation of the swing Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2007 in Bangkok, Thailand. Giant swing is a one of the Bangkok's tourists spots, the poles of an iconic structure was refurbished after standing there for over two centuries. The swing was built during the reign of King Rama I in 1784 in order to observe the Brahmin New Year Ceremony but King Rama VII discontinued the ceremony in 1931 due to economic problems

Sea of yellow for King at Giant Swing

His Majesty the King yesterday presided over the official inauguration of the refurbished Giant Swing.

The iconic structure has stood in the capital since 1784.

Cries of "Long Live Their Majesties and Her Royal Highness" resounded around the vicinity of the Giant Swing as
His Majesty, HM Queen Sirikit and HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn arrived for the ceremony at around 5pm.

Arriving at the Giant Swing, His Majesty proceeded to a pavilion to pay respects to a Buddha statue. He then lit candles and incense sticks before assigning the chief Brahmin priest of Devasatan Temple, Phra Raja Gura Vamadevamuni, to pay homage to sacred statues at the temple with lit offerings. The Devasatan Temple is located close to the Giant Swing.

According to Phra Raja Gura Vamadevamuni, HM King Phraphutthayotfa Chulalok the Great (King Rama I) had the Giant Swing erected to remind his people about being cautious.

In Brahmin belief, after the god Brahma created the earth, he invited the god Shiva to test its strength. The test involved two big mountains, which are represented by the two poles of the Giant Swing.

His Majesty sprinkled holy water on the refurbished Swing and pink rayon bands were tied around it. He then presented offerings to monks and poured ceremonial water.

Apirak, on behalf of the BMA, presented a scale 1:25 model of the Giant Swing. The model is made of gold teakwood from the same trees that were used in the renovation of the Swing.

Later, His Majesty visited a nearby exhibition about the Giant Swing. At around 6pm, Their Majesties the King and the Queen and the princess returned to the palace.

Apirak later quoted His Majesty as saying, "So many people showed up … The weather is nice. There is no rain".

Apirak said His Majesty also recounted that he had witnessed the Swing ritual before and had asked when it was discontinued.

Asked by reporters whether the Swing ritual would be resumed, Apirak said, "We will leave this to the chief Brahmin priest to decide".

Reuters - Hundreds of people flocked to a Bangkok hospital on Sunday to wish revered Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest-reigning monarch, a speedy recovery after he was treated for a blood clot in his leg.
The palace set out books for people to write their wishes for the King, who will be 80 in December, as Queen Sirikit went to the hospital to see her husband. Queen Sirikit thanked the crowd for its support as she entered the hospital to visit the king.

"His majesty is fine, and getting better,'' she told the crowd.

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest reigning monarch, was sitting up and eating on Monday, two days after being treated for "slightly" inadequate blood flow to his brain, the palace said on Monday.
"The cerebral cortex which was slightly lacking in blood supply and the neurological system which was found to be irregular has returned to normal," the palace quoted doctors treating the 79-year-old monarch as saying.
"The muscles in his leg and right arm have more energy and have almost returned to normal," it said in a statement.

I see there's no mention of Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn & Proincess Srirasmi if the kings health problems were really serious I would have expected them to be visiting.
Perhaps it's the media distorting the seriousness of the problem

Emperor Akihito of Japan has sent his best wishes to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and expressed concern about the Thai monarch's health, Foreign Minister Nitya Pibulsonggram said yesterday.

Published on November 2, 2007

Nitya, who was in Tokyo for a meeting on the Japan-Thailand Economic Partnership Agreement, said Emperor Akihito had sent him the message for His Majesty, who has been receiving treatment at Bangok's Siriraj Hospital since October 13.

"The emperor and people of Japan are concerned about His Majesty's illness," he said.

Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura also delivered a speech praising His Majesty and wishing HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana a swift recovery.

The Princess is being treated for cancer at Siriraj Hospital.

The Royal Household Bureau yesterday said His Majesty was performing exercises to gain strength and that his general condition was good.

In another statement, it said the Princess's condition was stable and she was able to eat some food. "Additional nourishment is still given intravenously. Medications and physical therapy are continuing," the statement said.

Italian Ambassador Ignazio Di Pace and Sayed Golam Zahid, a representative of the Bangladesh Embassy, came to express their good wishes.

Four famous Maiko - traditional Japanese female performers who practice classical Japanese arts such as music, dancing, flower arrangement, tea-making and calligraphy - also came to sign get-well messages too.
They are in Bangkok for the first ever Maiko performance to be held outside Japan to mark the 120th anniversary of Thai-Japanese relations.
