Bangkok's royal palace and park is lilt up by hundreds of thousands of candles in honour of the Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej's 60 year celebrations to the throne. Hundreds of thousands of Thais gathered at Sanam Luang, or the Royal Grounds to light candles to pray for the longevity of King Bhumibol and honour his reign, the longest in Thai history. He is also the world's longest-serving monarch.

Reception for Foreign Monarchs Hosted by His Majesty the King (13/6/2006) His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej is scheduled to host a reception on June 13 for visiting foreign monarchs and royal representatives participating in the Sixtieth Anniversary Celebrations of His Majesty’s Accession to the Throne. The reception takes place at Borommaratchasathit Maholan Hall, the extended part of Chakri Maha Prasat Throne Hall in the Grand Palace compound. According to the program, distinguished guests begin to arrive at Chakri Maha Prasat Throne Hall at 6:30 p.m. Their Majesties the King and Queen arrive at 7:30 p.m., waiting for welcoming royal guests. The least senior visiting monarch, based on the number of years on the throne, arrives first. The most senior one is the last person to arrive. Their Majesties the King and Queen receive royal visitors until an appropriate time when the Lord Chamberlain invites Their Majesties, together with foreign monarchs and royal family members, to take their places at the dining room. The menu for this historic reception consists of five courses of Western dishes, which also include fresh produce and materials from the Royal Project. The chef and other experienced cooks come from the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok. Grand Chamberlain Khwankeo Vajarodaya , who is also expert in culinary art, has given advice to the chef on the preparation of the banquet. Following the reception, His Majesty the King delivers a speech, expressing his thanks to the foreign monarchs and royal representatives. The royal Thai anthem is played after his speech. His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the sultan and yang di-pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, who is the most senior visiting monarch, represents the gathering of foreign royalty to offer best wishes to His Majesty the King. Following the reception, Their Majesties the King and Queen lead visiting foreign guests to another room for tea service. Then the royal visitors depart for their hotels. The most senior monarch leaves first and the others depart in descending order, by the number of each monarch’s years on the throne.
