Fears for Thai unity over playboy crown prince

THAI leaders harbour grave misgivings about the crown prince's fitness to become king owing to his reputation as a womaniser and links to a fugitive former prime minister, a leaked US diplomatic cable says.

Three senior members of Thailand's powerful privy council, a group of advisers appointed by the king, make clear their preference for an alternative to Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, who is considered a political liability because of his extramarital affairs in several European countries.

The succession is of pressing concern as King Bhumibol Adulyadej, 83, is in poor health. Revered by most Thais, he is one of the few unifying figures in a country deeply divided between an urban elite and a rural poor.

The councillors' fear is that with the divisive figure of the crown prince as king, any future political turbulence could split Thailand in two. The military and the police rely on loyalty to the crown to maintain control and without it their authority would be greatly weakened.

WikiLeaks cables reveal scandal and disease in Thai royal family | The Australian
According to the secret documents -- written over six years by US diplomats, including ambassadors to Bangkok -- Thailand will face a "moment of truth" after the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, whose son, Maha Vajiralongkorn, is regarded as his most likely successor. "It is hard to underestimate the political impact of the uncertainty surrounding the inevitable succession crisis which will be touched off once King Bhumibol passes," reads one cable from 2009, by James Entwistle, the US charge d'affaires.

Thailand's foreign minister embarked on an urgent mission to Germany on Thursday, accusing authorities there of making a "huge mistake" in impounding an aircraft owned by the Thai crown prince.
A Boeing 737 often flown by Maha Vajiralongkorn himself, the heir to the Thai throne, was sealed and banned from taking off late on Tuesday, Munich airport said, as part of a long-running business dispute.

Four exiled princes claim they were abandoned by their father, the Crown Prince

The Thai royal family has suffered another blow to its prestige with a public appeal by four exiled princes who claim they have been abandoned and barred from their homeland by their father, Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn.
The letter, circulated by email this week, paints a picture of a young family stripped of its name, privileges and right to return home since the breakdown of the marriage between Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn and his second wife.
"Every day we wish to return to Thailand," reads the letter, bearing the names of the four sons of the former Mom Sujarinee Mahidol, a Thai actress who married the prince in 1994 after 15 years as his mistress. Two years later, she fled with their children.
"For 15 years, we have never set foot in our country and we miss it far too much."
The sons lived first in Britain and more recently in the US. [...]
The emotional appeal by his sons will be especially damaging. "It shatters the carefully cultivated image of the royal family as fathers of the nation looking after the people as their children," analyst Andrew Walker said. - Source
