Ater much anticipation, the engagement of Frederik and Mary was publically announced on October 8, 2003.


The announcemnt was followed by a gala dinner at the Royal Palace of Fredensborg. Both sets of parents and Danish dignataries attended the occasion.

Less than two weeks after their engagement, the couple attended a gala dinner at Fredensborg Palace given by Queen Margrethe in honour of the Luxembourg Grand Ducal Couple who was on a State Visit to Denmark.

A few days later, Frederik and Mary were in attendance at the concert for the Grand Ducal couple and their guests.

In January 2004, Frederik and Mary travelled to Australia and Tasmania for a short vacation and to attend the wedding of Patricia Woods, Mary's sister, but they were followed everywhere by reporters and cameras...

On March 16th 2004, Frederik and Mary attended a gala dinner for Romanian President Ion Iliescu who was on a State Visit to Denmark.

On April 16th 2004, Frederik and Mary waved from the balcony with members of the Royal Family on the occasion of Queen Margrethe’s 64th birthday.

April 29th 2004, Frederik and Mary celebrated Princess Benedikte’s 60th birthday with members of the Royal Family.

On May 5th 2004, the Danish Defence paid tribute to Frederik and Mary on the occasion of their May 14th wedding.

Frederik and Mary attended a series of events preceeding their wedding.

On May 7th, they attended a Rock 'n Royal concert with Joachim and Alexandra.

Mary and Frederik participated in a regatta in Copenhagen harbour May 9th with Mary winning the Royal Match Race.

The same evening, the Australian Governor General gave a gala dinner for the engaged couple at Fredensborg Store kro.

Mary wore a tiara and sash for the first time at a gala dinner at Christiansborg on May 11th.

On May 12th, Frederik and Mary, accepted a gift from the city at the Town Hall and later that evening, they attended the Youth Party at Vega.

The following day as the couple arrived at Parliament to accept another gift, the wind blew Mary's hat away and her reaction charmed everyone.

The last evening at the Royal Theatre...

Frederik and Mary returned from their honeymoon fresh and ready to resume their official duties.

They attended the 70th birthday celebrations for Prince Henrik, a concert at Tivoli Gardens and a Gala dinner at Fredensborg Palace given by HM Queen Margrethe.

Just under a month as Crown Princess, Mary performed her first solo engagement when she presented the awards to the winners at the Danish Championships in Pony Riding at Silkeborg on June 13th.

From June 20th to July 5th, Frederik and Mary visited various cities in Greenland with Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik.

On July 6th, the Crown Prince presented scholarships from the Crown Prince Frederik Fund at Christian VIII's Palace, Amalienborg.

From July 27 to July 29, the Crown Prince Couple went on a journey aboard the Royal yacht, Dannebrog, to visit four major Danish cities of Aarhus, Aalborg, Odense and Sønderborg. Frederik and Mary were well received everywhere they went.

On August 4th, the Royal Couple attended the premiere of Alexander Kølpin’s summer ballet at Bellevue Teatret.

Crown Princess Mary was a guest at the Copenhagen International Fashion Fair in Copenhagen at the beginning of August. She attended a fashion show by Malene Birger during the event. (Mary’s 2nd solo engagement)

Frederik and Mary travelled to Athens for 2004 Summer Olympic Games to support the members of Danish National Team.

Mary attended the official opening of the Health-Week at the square in Fredensborg held by the council of Fredensborg, the home-town of the crown prince and crown princess September 9th. (Mary's 3rd solo engagement)

On September 14th & 15th, Frederik and Mary undertook their first official foreign visit which was London, England since their marriage. The two-day visit was packed with activities such,
They attended the opening of a new exhibition with works from the NY Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, called Ancient Art to Post-Impressionism at the Royal Academy of Arts, London.
They visited the British National Library in King's Cross to witness the British launch of the H.C. Andersen Bicentennial year, and official investiture of seven H.C. Andersen ambassadors.

October 1st, Mary was the lunch guest of Pink Tribute, an organisation, that fights against breast cancer. She talked to women who have suffered or suffer from the disease. (Mary's 5th solo engagement)

Mary and the Minister of Transport, Flemming Hansen opened a new stretch of motorway in Hirtshals, northern Denmark, October 9th. (Mary's 6th solo engagement)

Crown Prince Frederick participated in the Dragon 75th anniversary regatta at Saint Tropez from October 10th to 16th with Prince Henrik and ex-King Constantine.

Frederick attended the Danish Design Awards ceremony in Copenhagen on October 26th.

The October pregnancy rumours in the gossip magazines turned out to be a gall bladder attack for which Mary required surgery to remove gallstones at Gentofte County Hosptial followed by a period of rest.

On the 5th of November, Mary opened "Frimærker i Forum 2004" which is a stamp-exhibition forum held in Copenhagen. (Mary's 7th solo engagement)

Crown Prince Frederik attended the opening of the "Furniture Haute Couture" in Copenhagen on the 6th of November.

On the 9th of the month, Fredrik addressed the audience during the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards 2004 at Cirkusbygningens in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Although they went on a private visit to Berlin November 7th and 8th, Frederik and Mary had a busy schedule filled with public events. After a reception at City Hall, they toured the Alte Nationalgalerie museum. They visited the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum of contemporary arts to see the Friedrich Christian Flick Collection. They unveiled three pieces of art by Danish artist Olafur Eliasson at the Danish Embassy. They attended an event at which six Germans were named Hans Christian Andersen goodwill ambassadors.

On the 29th of November the Crown Prince Couple attended a concert by the Vienna Philharmonics at the Falkoner Center as a conclusion to the campaign day for business and culture of the region of Northern Jutland, Denmark.

During the morning of December 6th, Crown Princess Mary was welcomed by the chairman of the board and Doctor Mr. Niels Bloch Jespersen and the resident Miss Tanja Thulin when she visited the home of blind people Bredegaard in Fredensborg. She was shown around the workshops and she listened to a band called The Playing Moles. (Mary's 10th solo engagement)

During the afternoon, Mary attended the award ceremony of the Philiips Nordic Prize 2004 for Science at Rikshospital in Copenhagen. (Mary's 11th solo engagement)

December 7th, Crown Prince Frederik presented bequests of 20,000 and 40,000 Danish Kroners from the Anders Lassen Foundation to Sergent Ole Gretlund, Det Dansk Internationale Logistik Center, and Overkonstabel Thomas Huusmann, Den Kongelige Livgarde.

That evening, the Crown Prince Couple attended the 80th birthday celebrations of Bent Fabricius-Bjerre.

On December 11th, Crown Princess Mary opened a new home for old people called Ronshave, located in Bov which is in south Denmark. (Mary's 12th solo engagement)

Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary attend church with the Danish Royal Family for the Christmas service at Aarhus Cathedral. The Danish Royal Family was spending Christmas at Marselisborg Castle near Aarhus.

On Sunday January 2nd, the Royal Family attended a memorial service at Vor Frue Kirke in Copenhagen in honour of the victims of the tsunami disaster in south east Asia. When Frederik was overcome with emotions during the service, Mary gently held his hand.

On the 6th, Frederik and Mary met with secretary-general,Mrs. Mimi Jakobsen of Red Barnet, a save-the-children organization to learn more about its help program in South East Asia after the Tsunami-catastrophe.

The same day, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary visited the Danish Red Cross offices in Copenhagen. The Crown Prince couple was informed about the DRC´s work in the Tsunami struck parts of Asia. A guided tour around the offices was included. Crown Prince Frederik is member of the board in the DRC.

Crown Princess Mary was greeted by the chairman of the board of the Foundation of Christmas Stamps, Sigfried Soerensen as she arrived for a meeting as the new patron of the Christmas Seal Foundation in Copenhagen January 11th to learn more about the foundation’s role and function. The Christmas Seal Foundation was founded in 1904, and is specially known for the first Christmas seal in the world. The Christmas seals are used to raise money to help children. The foundation owns 4 Christmas Seal Homes, where children aged 6-14 are offered a 10 weeks stay. Every year, the foundation helps 700 children to get a better and happier life.

Crown Princess Mary toured Gaia Art museum in Randers, Denmark January 13th. The museum shows art painted by mentally handicapped people.

The Crown Prince Couple attended P3-Prisen Ceremony on January 14th.

They were also present at the opening of the Copenhagen Opera House and the gala performance the following day.

On January 18th, the Crown Princess attended a meeting of the Psychiatry Foundation in Copenhagen to learn more about its role and function.

On January 19th, Crown Princess Mary assumed the patronage of the Danish Heart Society from her father-in-law, Prince Henrik. Her mother, Henrietta Clark Donaldson died of a heart disease in 1997 and the crown princess spoke movingly about how much a family can suffer when one of its members has a heart disease. She also underlined the importance of prevention in connection with heart diseases.

Mary went to the opening of Beauty and The Beast at the New Theatre in Copenhagen on January 20th. After the performance, she met the Beast, played by the actor Christian Boland and the Beauty, played by the actress Maria Lucia.

The Crown Prince Couple undertook a four-day official visit to New York, January 30th to February 2nd 2005. During the first day, they visited a Danish Seaman’s Church in Brooklyn and the Scandinavian House on Park Avenue.

The second day's official activities included a visit to New York's Museum of Modern Art and the opening of the Hans Christian Andersen exhibit at the United Nations Headquarters.

On the third day of their official visit, Frederik and Mary visited PS 144 Hans Christian Andersen Public School in Harlem. During the evening the Crown Prince Couple greeted the guests at the Hans Christian Andersen bicentenial Gala Dinner held at the Public Library.

The Crown Princess (as its patron) attended the yearly Copenhagen International Fashion Fair at the Bella Center in Copenhagen on February 10th to 13th.

February 16th, Princess Mary attended the meeting of the Danish Association for Mental Health, an association that works to promote more intelligence and tolerance for the people with mental diseases.

Frederik's and Mary's Trip to Australia

The Royal couple spent the first day of their official trip to Australia sailing in Sydney Harbour on opposing boats, Frederik sailing for Denmark and Mary on the Australian yacht, racing against each other. Mary defeated Frederik winning 2 of the 3 match races.

On February 28th, the Premier of South Wales State hosted a luncheon in honour of the Couple at Sydney’s Level 41 Restaurant.

On March 2nd, Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Mary attended the 90th Australian Red Cross Ball charity dinner at Sydney’s Westin Hotel.

On March 3rd, Mary attended a luncheon at Sydney’s Four Seasons Hotel, hosted by the Mental Health Foundation. Later that evening, the Couple attended the New South Wales State Dinner at Government House.

On March 4th, Crown Princess Mary toured the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute in Darlinghurst, Sydney. That evening, she attended the Institute’s charity ball at the Wentworth Hotel. Mary addressed the guests in a speech supporting the work of the Institute. Crown Prince Frederik was attending a gala dinner for the Farr-40 world sailing championships.

On March 5th, Crown Princess Mary met with patients during a tour of the Westmead Children's Hospital in Sydney. She read the H.C. Andersen fairy tale The Ugly Duckling to the young listeners. Mary also toured the Australian Cancer Research Foundation at Westmead Hospital in Sydney's western suburbs on the same day. During the evening, both Frederik and Mary attended a dinner hosted by the Cancer Research Foundation at the Elizabeth Bay waterfront mansion, Boomerang.

On March 6th, the Crown Prince Couple attended a service at a Danish church in Pennant Hills, Sydney and talked to the children from Sunday school.

On March 7th, the Crown Prince appointed six Hans Christian Andersen Ambassadors (five from Australia & one from New Zealand) during a ceremony held in Jorn Utzon Room (named in honour of the Danish architect) at the Sydney Opera House. Mary was also appointed an honorary Ambassador during the ceremony and received a kiss from her husband. The Royal Couple later unveiled a Hans Christian Andersen bust at the Observatory Hill in Sydney. They also were guests of honour at the Danish Consul Reception at the Bennelong Restaurant in the Sydney Opera House.

On March 8th, Frederik and Mary arrived in Canberra to be greeted by Governor-General Michael Jeffery. They visited the Australian National University for the signing of agreements between ANU and the University of Copenhagen. They laid a wreath at the Australian War Memorial and attended a state dinner at Government House hosted by the governor-general.

On March 9th, the Couple toured Parliament House, had afternoon tea with Prime Minister John Howard, visited the National Museum of Australia and watched the kangaroos living on the grounds of Government House.

On March 10th, Frederik and Mary met privately with Governor John Landy and his wife before going to Melbourne's Federation Square where several thousand people gathered to watch them arrive. The royal couple along with Premier Steve Bracks inaugurated a live video link from Federation Square to Copenhagen's Radhusspladsen (City Hall Square). Crown Princess Mary delivered a speech to launch the Square to Square Project. After their duties at Federation Square, the Royal Couple took a boat cruise on the Yarra River before attending a midday state reception hosted by Premier Steve Bracks.

Later that afternoon, the Crown Prince Couple made their official visit to the Princess' home state of Tasmania. They were greeted by Premier Paul Lennon and Governor William Cox. That evening, they attended a gala dinner at Government House in Hobart.

On March 11th, Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Mary were escorted by Tasmanian Premier Paul Lennon on a tour of the historic penal colony of Port Arthur and then they walked through the ruins of the Broad Arrow Café. The Couple held their first and only press conference at Government House in Hobart on the last day of their official tour of Australia. That evening they attended the Chocolate Lover's Ball sponsored by Save The Children Australia.

The Royal Couple spent another week in Tasmania enjoying a holiday.

March 23rd, Prince Frederik opened the 8th Indoor Archery World Championships in Aalborg.

March 31st, Crown Prince Frederik attended the opening ceremony of a Round table meeting for European Ombudsmen at Christiansborg to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Danish Ombudsman Institution. Prince Frederik attended a second engagement the same day.

Crown Princess Mary awarded four Danish companies the MIA-prize for their efforts to promote diversity and equal treatment on the workplace in Copenhagen, Denmark, March 31st.

During the evening, the Crown Princess and Princess Laurentien attended a Gala dinner at Kronborg Castle in Elsinore, north of Copenhagen, to mark 400 years of diplomatic relationships between the kingdoms of Denmark and The Netherlands. Mary received a flower named after herself.

The Crown Prince Couple attended the gala performance at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen for Hans Christian Andersen's 200th birthday celebrations on Friday April 1st. Celebrities from around the world convened in Denmark to honour the famous author.

April 6th, Princess Mary along with Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik took part in her first torch procession by the citizens of Fredensborg. The citizens greet the monarch with the torchlight procession when the couple moves into the Fredensborg Castle.

April 15-16, 2005, the Crown Prince Couple and Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen visited a temporary shelters for tsunami-affected displaced people in Thailand. A Memorial Service was held for the Danish relatives of victims who died or disappeared in the tsunami catastrophy which hit Thailand at Christmas. Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark joined the families for the service.

Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Mary traveled to Japan to attend the Danish National Day event at Aichi Expo 2005 on Wednesday, April 20th. But during their their two-day visit, they participated in several other events including: a welcome banquet hosted by the Danish Chamber of Commerce and the Danish Embassy in Japan at Tokyo; the opening of the new Japanese headquarters of the Danish pharmaceuticals company Novo Nordisk Pharma Ltd. in Tokyo; a reception party at the Royal Danish Embassy; the opening by Crown Princess Mary of the Andersen Studio that offers visitors the world of the Andersen fairy tales at the Funabashi Andersen Park; and a visit by Mary to the diabetic center of Tokyo Women's Medical University in Tokyo, Japan.

The Crown Prince and The Crown Princess are expecting a child

Their Royal Highnesses The Crown Prince and The Crown Princess are happy to announce that The Crown Princess is expecting to give birth to a child by the end of October this year.

The childbirth is expected to take place at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen (Copenhagen University Hospital).
