I don't think so; it's just that the Prince will be performing some of his duties in his absence. I assume this has happened before when the Emperor was out of the country.

Crown Prince Naruhito waits for the arrival of the visiting British Prince Andrew at the Togu Palace in Tokyo Thursday, May 31, 2007. Imperial Palace official announced that Naruhito will undergo a surgery on June 6 to remove polyp in the duodenum.

Don't worry. This surgery is not so dangerous. The Crownprice will be allright in no time. Nowadays, polyp surgery it's easy. I don't know what kind of surgery must he exactly has, but some of them could cauterized.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Crown Prince Naruhito of Japan to serve as honorary president of his Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation.
