Crown prince's 'happiest time'
The Thames and I by Crown Prince Naruhito Reviewed by J Sean Curtin Beyond the carefully crafted public personas, most Japanese know relatively little about the private lives of their imperial family. While the personal lives and intimate secrets of European royals are regularly splashed across newspapers, their Japanese counterparts remain distant, cocooned. It is this inaccessibility that makes Crown Prince Naruhito's memoir of his time at Oxford University between 1983 and 1985 such a compelling read. http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Japan/HA21Dh01.html |

Japan prince relives student days
A new translation of memoirs written by Japan's crown prince offer a rare insight into the tastes and personality of a man whose life is now cloistered. "The Thames and I" details Prince Naruhito's time at Oxford University, where he studied between 1983 and 1985. The heir to the Japanese throne, known simply as Hiro while at Oxford, seems to have revelled in the freedom there........................ http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asi...ic/4674188.stm Heirs and races The campaign to keep women off the imperial throne has taken a xenophobic turn, writes Justin McCurry Justin McCurry in Tokyo Friday February 3, 2006 Although the original appeared 13 years ago, the release this week of a translation of the memoirs of Crown Prince Naruhito, the heir to the Japanese throne, has given English speakers a rare glimpse of the more human face of one of the imperial family's most visible members. During his days at Oxford University, the prince, now 45, apparently developed a liking for English pubs and fish and chips wrapped in newspaper, and, in his stilted efforts to mix with other students, insisted he be called, simply, Hiro................ http://www.guardian.co.uk/elsewhere/...701669,00.html Last edited by mandyy; 02-03-2006 at 02:39 PM. |

Crown prince turns 46, happy about imperial pregnancy
(Kyodo) _ Crown Prince Naruhito turned 46 Thursday, expressing his hope that all goes well for Princess Kiko, his younger brother's wife, who is expecting her third child in autumn. At a news conference prior to his birthday, the crown prince said he and his wife Crown Princess Masako are happy at the news, while refraining from commenting on a proposal by a government panel to revise the Imperial House Law so that females could ascend Japan's imperial throne as a way to avoid a possible succession crisis. If the law is revised in line with the proposal, the crown prince's only child Princess Aiko, who under the current law is not allowed to ascend the throne because she is female, will be second in line to the throne after her father, and could become the first female monarch since the 18th century. "As her parent I have various thoughts, but I would like to refrain from commenting further," the crown prince said......................... http://asia.news.yahoo.com/060222/kyodo/d8fuc7ko0.html Japan's crown prince welcomes royal pregnancy .....................Naruhito spoke tenderly of Aiko, who starts nursery school this spring, describing how she took a cake to her mother when Masako was in bed with a cold on her birthday last December. He also said Aiko was fascinated with Japan's national sport of sumo, excitedly watching the giant wrestlers on TV and imitating their moves. "She also knows the names of all the top wrestlers," the proud father added.
