Father hopes Crown Prince's Cambodia visit will put spotlight on son's murder
Quote:
Japanese Crown Prince Naruhito left on June 25 for Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. During his first trip to Cambodia, he will visit memorial monuments for Japanese volunteer Atsuhito Nakata and police officer Haruyuki Takada who were killed there in 1993.

Nakata, 25, was a member of the U.N. Volunteer Program (UNP) for elections in Cambodia, while the 33-year-old Takada from the Okayama Prefectural Police force was participating in a U.N. peacekeeping mission there. Nakata was shot to death along with a 19-year-old Cambodian interpreter on April 8, 1993, when he and his interpreter were heading for a conference on safety measures in preparation for Cambodian elections after more than 20 years of hostilities.

In an interview with the Mainichi Shimbun, Nakata's 74-year-old father Takehito said in Kobe that the Crown Prince's visit to Cambodia will help today's young people know that there was a young man who risked his life for other people. [...]

In 2010, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko invited him to the Imperial Palace for dinner to cheer him up. He says the Crown Prince's visit to Cambodia will put the spotlight on his son's volunteer work once again.

Crown prince honors policeman killed in PKO
Quote:
Crown Prince Naruhito laid flowers Wednesday at a memorial in Phnom Penh to a Japanese police officer who was killed in 1993 during U.N. peacekeeping operations in the Southeast Asian country. The president of the Xunta of Galicia (Spain), Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has invited Crown Prince Naruhito to visit Galicia. The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia is the destination of the Way of St. James, a major Christian pilgrimage route since the Middle Ages that is inscribed on the World Heritage List. Feijoo and the governor of Wakayama Prefecture (southern Japan), Yoshinobu Nisaka, agreed to strengthen the links between Galicia and Wakayama through a joint promotion of the routes to Santiago and Kumano. The three Kumano Sanzan shrines are the Sōhonsha ("head shrines") of all Kumano shrines, lie at between 20 to 40 km of distance one from the other and are connected by the pilgrimage route known as "Kumano Sankeimichi". They belong to the “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range“ which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, too.

The crown prince is presently visiting Fukuoka city. Today he talked to students at the Fukuoka International Student Support Center. (The Fukuoka International Student Support Center helps international students to find part-time jobs and assists in their everyday lives. It also supports them in finding employment at Japanese companies, and in creating networks among them after graduation.) The prince will also attend the opening ceremony of the General Assembly of the International Urological Association and will visit the Ito campus of Kyushu University. Kyushu University is the largest public university on the island of Kyushu.

Here is an article covering the event:

Lagarde warns of 'wartime level' debt
Quote:
Cutting public debt while encouraging economic growth will be vital in stabilizing the global economy, which is showing a slower than expected recovery, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde said Friday. Speaking at the annual plenary meeting of the IMF and World Bank Group in Tokyo, Lagarde stressed that "reducing public debt is very difficult without economic growth." [...]

Lagarde's speech was preceded by an address by Crown Prince Naruhito, who thanked the participants from 188 countries at the plenary meeting for their support toward Japan following the Great East Japan Earthquake. "I am glad I can show you a nation that is recovering steadily from the damage, thanks to the support of the international community," he said.

The Crown Prince also touched on some global issues, saying the world faces "various challenges," including stabilizing finances and reducing poverty. Mutual assistance and acting in solidarity will be key in overcoming such difficulties, he said.

I have seen a pic in "Bowing and Curtseying" thread in which Princess Akishino and Princess Kiko were bowing to CP Naruhito while seeing himoff at airport on an official visit. Do they always see himoff at airport while he goes on official visits?

Well, there seems, in fact, to be a general rule of junior members seeing off senior members. (And, of course, the crown prince is a senior member in relation to Prince and Princess Akishino as this is not so much about age but about rank.)

Whenever the emperor and empress leave the country, the whole family is there to see them off. On the other hand, when twenty-year-old Princess Mako recently left for Edinburgh, there was nobody from her family with her at the airport. At least, there were no pics of her family, but there were pics of her alone. (Which seems to indicate that this is a matter of rank because, if it were a decision based on emotions, I think it would be normal for parents to accompany their young daughter to the airport when she is leaving to pass, for the very first time, several months in a foreign country, all on her own.)

But while I have seen lots of pictures of the imperial family seeing off the emperor and empress, I have seen but a few pictures of Prince and Princess Akishino seeing off the crown prince. I do not know if they are just there "on special occasions" (maybe if the crown prince is leaving for a trip that will take longer than a week or something like that) or if they are always there but we are just not shown the pictures. (Pictures that show "but" the crown prince and Prince and Princess Akishino have, of course, always less news value than pictures that show the emperor and empress along with the whole imperial family.)

It seems to be a custom in the Japenese Imperial Family and also was a tradition in their European counterparts. I can recall seeing pictures of the British royals seeing of the Queen and Duke of Edinburg as well as Hereditary Prince Knud and his family, including little Ingolf and Elisabeth, waving goodbye to King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid departing for a long royal tour.

Here is a picture I have found two days ago in a Japanese forum. I have no further info concerning it but it obviously shows Prince and Princess Akishino at the airport, presumably seeing off Crown Prince Naruhito.
