I have been living 200 km away from Kobe,
but I awoke to the big shake of the earthquake at the moment of this disaster・・・

Thanks for the photos!
It is a great news. Crown Princess Masako felt well to undertake an official engagement alongside Crown Prince Naruhito.

Japanese crown Prince Naruhito (L) and Crown Princess Masako offer flower bouquets for earthquake victims during a memorial service for the 15th anniversary of the Great Hanshin Earthquake on January 17, 2010 in Kobe city in Hyogo prefecture, western Japan. Approximately 6,400 people lost their lives in the Great Hanshin Earthquake, or Kobe earthquake as it is more commonly known outside of Japan, that occurred on January 17, 1995. Is this kind of tiresome commentary still doing the rounds!? Masako is not locked in the palace, never has been. A few years back the major criticism that surfaced in the Japanese media was that since Masako was seen socialising in various restaurants in Tokyo, then she should have been carrying a full load of engagements. Japan has no paparazzi, the royals can move around Tokyo and their various country villas without photos of them surfacing.
Masako had a nervous breakdown, the fact that Japanese don't acknowledge mental illness at all, it's rather ground breaking that medical information on Masako is forthcoming. She's on medication and receives counselling, she's also in the past few years increased her official engagements. Over the past 3 years she's done all the balcony appearances for the Emperor's birthday and New Years, during the height of her illness she only did one or 2. She's now greeting State Visit guests, which she had stopped doing for several years. She doesn't have a full load of engagements but then she hasn't completely recovered either. But she certainly isn't and has never been a prisoner in the palace! That might make for great tabloid headlines, but it's not the truth, but I suppose tabloids aren't big on truthful statements.

Namiey, Turkish Delight,
Thank you for the photos! My distant relative was hurt seriously during the Great Hanshin earthquake in Kobe. I am so sorry for all the victims of the natural disasters...
Charlotte1,
You are absolutely right in your comment about the tabloids and the CPss. Thank you so much!

I thought that she looked rather strained in the picture of her and Naruhito carrying the flowers toward the monument. But otherwise, I think that she looks well.

I must say that as of today I have a new and sudden fascination with this royal family!

I've been a royal watcher for quite some time, but some how this family went from being in my peripheral vision to becoming one of my passionate interests! :)

I love the way the Prince and Princess look at each other. The love really shows in their faces, their eyes cannot hide the affection I imagine they share for each other. The Prince really does seem to be a compassionate and loving husband, very supportive of his wife, and she seems to have true adoration for him as well.

There is just something about the way they look at each other that captures me. Whatever she may have experienced from the expectations and scrutiny from marrying a royal, I don't think the marriage itself has suffered. I see them sharing a secret, knowing that they are strong in their love for each other, no matter what has happened. Ahhh, I guess that's the romantic in me, lol. :) This couple has captivated me! :)

(ps-- this is my first post here, but I've been a reader/lurker for about a month. I am honored to be among such intelligent, thoughtful, and insightful women & men. Can't wait to meet you all!)

I think that the Crown Prince and Crown Princess are a close couple, and I agree that he's been enormously supportive of her.

At the press conference on February 5th the doctors' treating the CPss Masako said the CPrince and their daughter, Pss Aiko, had played a major role in her recovery. However the CPss's health stays "still fluctuating".
The report revealed that doctors see official overseas visits as being too demanding for CPrincess Masako, and that it would be ideal to consider private foreign visits of short durations.

I have a feeling we won't truly know for many years, if ever.

I dun really believe the seriousness of CP Masako's illness been released so far. It's a bit fishy.

Is anything known about the mental health of members of her family? That can sometimes be a clue. Whatever has been her problem, it must be a very serious one--something that can't quickly be remedied with medication and/or therapy.

CPss Masako's maternal uncle once removed (her mother's cousin) was a famous Japanese writer and critic Jun Etou (1932-1999).
He had the same mental problems during his lifetime. He had committed suicide in 1999.
