Railways: the Presidential Train from the House of Savoy to the Heads of State

The dining room, the car with the bunks and the President's quarters.

Period furnishings and interiors and equipment that the FS Italiane Foundation preserves and enhances for historical and cultural purposes, keeping them in perfect working order and preserving their decorum.

The presidential train on which the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella traveled for the celebrations of the 180 years of the Naples-Portici line, the first Italian railway infrastructure, transported the rulers of the House of Savoy and then the Heads of State to his carriages. In fact, the convoy was built as a royal train between 1928 and 1933 and then transformed into a presidential train between 1947 and 1948.

The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella had traveled on board the presidential train in 2017 on the occasion of the inauguration of the National Railway Museum of Pietrarsa. In 2004 the President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi used the presidential train for an institutional journey between Rome and Livorno. The train is always available for the needs and institutional movements of the highest state offices.

The FS Italiane Foundation has in fact carried out various restoration operations on the carriages of the presidential train, both aesthetic and operational.

Four carriages have been restored and made fully functional for institutional and celebratory services. One of the first restoration works concerned the interior of the Sz10 carriage exhibited in the National Railway Museum of Pietrarsa.
All the furnishings and decorations have been cleaned and, if necessary, restored. Particular care has been taken in bringing back to the original splendor the details, such as the handles and the appliques made of bronze, finished in pure gold.
Wooden walls and floors have been restored and new wiring has been installed in the interiors for lighting and total video surveillance of the environment. Fabrics, leather and velvets have been cleaned and subjected to specific treatment.

The Sz6 carriage, which is kept in the Rome Termini Remittance Garage, has also been restored and revised. The FS Italiane Foundation has planned to restore other cars in the coming years.

The royal train was built for the needs of the House of Savoy, consisting of 12 cars of the 1921 type with a metal casing.
The first three carriages were built in 1929 by FIAT who won the National Competition for the construction of a royal train to be set up for the wedding of the Crown Prince Umberto II of Savoy with Princess Maria Josè.

The train was enriched with fittings made by the best artisans of the time. The whole construction, installation, choice of materials and colors was followed by the Architect Giulio Casanova of the Royal Albertina Academy of Turin. Between 1947 and 1948, the Officine FS of Porta al Prato and Voghera returned the nine cars that formed the presidential train to the Railways.
Several improvements were made and the train was transformed into "Presidential Republic's mobile operating unit". In 1955 the train was equipped with a communication system managed by a telephone exchange installed on board.

Over the years, the cars of the presidential train have become 13, but the average composition varied, depending on the occasion, between 7 and 10 units. The train is listed in the train traffic regulations as belonging to the category with "privileged gear" and in the ranking of importance it is in first place under "trains preceded by relay and relay trains".

Carlo Emanuele I of Savoy returns to Savigliano

The Great and ... the Granda

It seems that Nostradamus had predicted the death of Carlo Emanuele I "on the road to Jerusalem". Lived between 1562 and 1630 "the Great" perhaps willingly renounced pilgrimages to the Holy Land but met his death in "his" Savigliano, at Palazzo Cravetta, which still faces - look at case - on Via Jerusalem.
The beautiful loggia decorated with the marble busts of 12 princes and princesses of the Savoy dynasty and enriched by the frescoes of Francesco and Costanzo Arbaudi (around 1624) is the ideal starting point to immerse yourself in the "Ars Regia. La Granda alchemica" exhibition organized by Le Terre dei Savoia association and curated by Enzo Biffi Gentili.

In fact, before entering the mystery of the death of Carlo Emanuele I (struck by the plague), in the hall that housed his remains, Loredana De Robertis, on behalf of the Múses, curated a historical introduction that helps the visitor to retrace the salient stages of the special relationship between the Duke called "the Great" and nicknamed "Testa di Fuoco" for the fighting spirit.

Famous for having challenged the Spanish giant but also for its attention to the arts, we find it in some portraits as well as in the projects for the Arc de Triomphe that in 1585 was created by Giovan Battista Ripa precisely for his passage to Savigliano together with the neo bride: the Infanta of Spain, Caterina Michela of Habsburg. Whoever visits the Ars Regia exhibition starting from the open gallery participates in this ideal wedding procession through a scenic reproduction. In the background an evocation of Carlo Emanuele I with the three most significant female figures of his life: his mother, Margherita di Valois; his wife Caterina Michela of Habsburg; the daughter-in-law, Maria Cristina of France: first "Madama Reale".

A tribute to the women of the House of Savoy who certainly attended the beautiful buildings in which the 8 sections of the exhibition unfold and which perhaps played a not secondary role in the frequentation of the Savoy princes with the Ars Regia.

Conference on the Corte dei Savoia at the "G. Pariani" nursing home in Oleggio Eventi in Novara

Pariani Rest Home of Oleggio
Via Dante Alighieri, 93
From 10/26/2019 to 10/26/2019

Mary Rose
19 October 2019 15:36

Because the culture belongs to everyone, but above all it can be used by those who cannot leave the health resort due to illness or motor impediments:
the "G. Pariani" Retirement Home of Oleggio, under the patronage of the Municipality of Oleggio, in collaboration with the Civic Museum, organizes a conference, open to the whole population, by Maria Rosa Marsilio, historian, author and television presenter :
"Royal Madame, intrigue, power, passion at the Savoy court of the 1600s"

The public will be accompanied on a real "journey through time" to the discovery of the Ducal Court of the Savoys of the 1600s. Two French Princesses who will become not only a cause for scandals and "licentious" gossip but that they will give to the city of Turin, to Piedmont, those stylistic, cultural, social innovations, capable of transporting the Savoy State from a lazy Renaissance to the opulent splendor of the Baroque. Through the paintings of the time, the photos of wonderful royal residences, the loves, intrigues and regrets of the royal princesses who linked their destiny to the Piedmont of the 1600s will be revealed.

Saturday 26 October at 3 pm at the "Dott. G. Pariani" Foundation, via Dante 93 Oleggio. Free entry.
