List of German-Austrian Royal, Princely and Mediatised Families

Hi there,

I am trying to make a list of royal and noble lines from Germany, with their current heads. This task seems to be pretty hard as there aren't many information about it floating around. Maybe we can do that together! Can somebody add more lines and houses with their heads? Any help would be appreciated! Maybe we can make a great list!

Thanks for your input and thoughts everybody!

Wow, this is an amazing list.. thank you so very much Stefan!!

Indeed a very interesting list, thanks for posting this overview :flowers:

Does anybody know the current head of the house of Wrede?

Thank you magnik!
Does anybody know the current of the family Cramer-Klett? Is Rasso Freiherr von Cramer-Klett? Thanks in advance already!

The current head of the Silesian family of Schoenaich-Carolath is currently Friedrich Prince of Schoenaich-Carolath (*1943).

Thank you magnik!

From what I've read it looks like Rasso is the current head of the Cramer-Klett-family. As he inherits the title Freiherr its more than possible. But I didn't found a listing about the family at Wikipedia, so I'm not absolutely sure. :flowers:

Check here at the bottom of the page where the listings don't have family crests.

Are you sure about the heads of the Houses of Stolberg-Wernigerode and Oettingen-Spielberg? I think their heads are Christian-Heinrich, Prinz zu Stolberg-Wernigerode and
Albrecht-Ernst, 11. Fürst zu Oettingen-Oettingen und Oettingen-Spielberg. Or are they deceased? Any info would be great help for me!

Fürst Christian Henrich zu Stolberg-Wernigerode died in 2001.

Georg Fürst von Waldburg zu Zeil und Trauchburg passed away in December 2015. The new head of the house and 8th Fürst is his son Maria ERICH Wunibald Aloysius Georg Fürst von Waldburg zu Zeil und Trauchburg (b. 1962).

Hello everyone. Hope all is well. I am trying find some information that maybe you might be able to help. I am looking into two families through my mother grandmothers side. My grandmother father was named Otto babet (legally changed name from babetzki, Babetski). His mother was named Henrietta Lowe (according to relatives Henrietta went by the name as Henrietta von Lowe) she had a sister named milchia Von Lowe who married a von Braun. Relatives state that the von Braun’s might be related to Werner von braun but a distant connection. My 2nd great grandfather hen rich babetzki did not like the von brauns because they were too aristocratic. They family are originally from plotzkau, Germany where apparently owned some lands. Henrietta had two brothers who were in the Prussian army but one of them played he violin for kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany. Henrietta was engaged to a Prussian officer but no one did not know what had happened to the relationship. Heinrich babetzki later would go to Argentina to maintain the family lands. Heinrich worked in the family stables in Germany. According to my mother as she was told but not sure if correct that she was told that Henrietta was a baroness but no evidence as of yet. Henrietta was born abt 1879 poltzkau germany. Still am unable to find any information on the von Lowe family, or could be named as von Loewe.
Another family that I have been in research for many years with a constant dead end is my 3rd great grandfather Paul Pauli. I have a written story by my great grandmother Loretta ruppelt stating that Paul Pauli is of royal birth but when he married hedwick Vogt his family disowned him. It further continues that Paul Pauli heard his father was dying named made a trip to see him. He returned I’ll and hedwick found him sitting under a tree and died a short time later. His first child was born in 1869 named Maria. Also had a son named Paul jr. but with no date as of yet. They were born in khant chemmelitz (scholsengan) Prussia. This location is currently now as Katy wrokrauski, Poland. Scholsengan is another version of Silesia, Prussia. Hedwick Vogt remarries to gotlieb rupppelt and had three daughters first named Emma born in 1877. I believe that Pauli has died abt 1875 where gotliebs first wife Christeanna dorn who died in 1875. Dorn was my 3rd great grandmother having my 2nd great grandfather robert Ruppelt. I believe with my research is that Pauli might have been one of the sons to gebhard von Bucher d1875. The von Bluchers resided in Krieblowitz which is 2 miles from the where Pauli has lived. Pauli carries he title as count of Berlin according to my mother, but I believed it was a residence that the Von bluchers has in Berlin which is now the us embassy. The von bluchers were all titled as counts while the first child was rightfully titled as count but also hereditary prinz. Pauli died abt 1878 believe in Katy wrokrawski. Hope anyone can help me discovering some insight on these families. I am also trying to find any photos of the von Lowe’s and Von bluchers. I have seen pics of the famous von bluchers but hopefully there is pics of his descendants. Thank you. Chris fraser

Which is the actual correct name: Saxe-Coburg and Gotha or Saxe-Coburg-Gotha? I have seen the name of the duchy as both.

According to the Heraldica website, when Duke Ernst of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld received Gotha in exchange for Saalfeld in 1826, he assumed the title Herzog von Sachsen-Koburg und Gotha, or Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

https://www.heraldica.org/topics/royalty/HGSachsen-CG.htm

Gawin, Thank you for the information on the House Laws. I was able to learn that Albert Edward, Prince of Wales not only renounced the succession for himself but for his heirs.
Did Prince Arthur of Connaught, son of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught have to separately sign paperwork to renounce royal rights?

Yes, Prince Arthur and his father renounced their rights to the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in favor of Charles Duke of Albany in a letter dated June 24, 1899 and submitted to the United Diet of the Duchies on June 30. They reserved their succession rights should Charles' male line become extinct.

What about the name of the duchies, as distinct from the duke? From your link, the Constitution of 1852 § 1 refers to them as "Die Herzogtümer Coburg und Gotha".

Hi. The more I try and learn about the German nobility the more there seems to be to learn.
The list at the beginning of this thread has been very informative and great launch point.
But I was wondering if there was a way to tell who is Catholic and who is Lutheran? or other christian?
Wikipedia sometimes mentions if a family or family head is Roman Catholic but often others have no religious entry. I'm also becoming aware that through history the status has changed as branches become extinct and things shift around.

If you look up the directory of the International Commission for Orders of Chivalry, which lists the legitimate dynastic orders still awarded by non-reigning royal houses, the most recent religious affiliation of the head of the house is mentioned before the list of respective orders currently awarded. For example, go to

http://www.icocregister.org/2016.ICOCRegister.pdf

EDIT: The list above applies only to sovereign houses at the time of the Congress of Vienna or thereafter. It doesn't include therefore mediatized families.

There are Families who are traditionally catholic and some who are traditionally protestant but then there are also Families specially from the big ones where a branch has another religion then the Main branch. But so far i don#t think there is a list who gives the religions for all the Families.

Thanks. Mbrunos idea is a good start.
But yes it gets more complex the deeper into the house histories I go. and Germanic history, which I am now learning along the way - I thought it was a basic north/south thing, but those principalities/duchies in the center/thuringian area are a tangle. And Hesse seem to be protestant in some way.
Sometimes the info can be teased out of the occasional wedding/funeral story, and quite often those families that are RC are labelled such in Wikipedia, but the others aren't. And I'm not quite across the differences between the protestant groups.
So I'll just keep looking...
