A fascinating read about Siegfried zu Mecklenburg and his daughter Frieda, the Togolese descendants of the House of Mecklenburg and how Frieda was welcomed into the family by her aunt Princess Woizlawa.

Thanks JR, I have never heard of this story before. Duke Adolf was the godfather of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, though during and after WWII contact was broken of completely.

On 28 August the annual memorial service for deceased members of the House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz took place at the Church of St John in Mirow where the family crypt is located. The service was led by Pastor Ulrike Kloss of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany, and the retired Catholic Pastor, Bernhard Szymanski.

On 15 October the Duke and Duchess of Mecklenburg were invested with the insignia of Bailiff Grand Cross of Justice of the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of St George at the Memory Church (Igreja da Memória) in Lisbon, Portugal.

On 11 March the 100th anniversary of the death of the Grand Duchess Anastasia Michailovna of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Grand Duchess of Russia, was commemorated with a service at her grave in Ludwigslust.
Prince Georg Friedrich of Prussia laid a wreath on his great-grandmother's grave.

:previous: Does anyone have information on Hande Macit?

The House of Mecklenburg has some information on their website:
https://de.mecklenburg-strelitz.org/2020/12/20/verlobung-des-erbprinzen-und-fraulein-hande-macit/

She was born September the 16th 1992 in Tarsus/Turkey, studied there at the American College, moved then 2010 into the Netherlands, city of Rotterdam to study International Business Administration there. She has finished her studies 2014 and became a Dutch citizen.

2018 she founded together with her brother a yoghurt factory - Luwia Yoghurt.

She is taking religious lessons in Catholicism to become a christian - what surprises at least me: I thought, all East German Noble Houses were protestants.

The family has been Catholic since Duke Georg converted in the 1920s.

Michael Duke of Mecklenburg, Princess Sophia Wolkonsky, Alexander Prince of Mecklenburg and fiancee Hande Macit attended the Tulip Ball in Amsterdam yesterday, May 28:

Both the Mecklenburg princes as well Nicholas Medforth-Mills are related to the Dutch royal family but I doubt there has been a meeting.

That has to be a very distant relationship because the 2 Duke's of Mecklenburg are from the Strelitz-line and Queen Wilhelmina's husband was from the Schwerin-line.

There are closer relationships to the Mecklenburg-Strelitzes, for an example:

Julius Ernst Prinz zur Lippe-Biesterfeld (1873-1952) was married to Viktoria Marie von Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Herzogin zu Mecklenburg (1878-1948). Onkel Julius and Tante Marie were very close to their nephew Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, Prinz zur Lippe-Biesterfeld (1911-2004).

But that is also very distant as this line from the Mecklenburg's is descending from a second cousin of Duchess Viktoria Marie.

"The Duke proudly announces, that today the civil marriage of his eldest son HH Duke Georg Alexander with Miss. Hande Macit took place in the Great Hall in the Palace of Mirow at 2 pm.

Duke Alexander of Mecklenburg and King Willem Alexander are very distantly related, they are 5th cousins once removed, as both descended from Emperor Paul I of Russia.

Willem Alexander and Nicholas Medforth-Mills are also distantly related, 5th half-cousins once removed, as both have descended from two marriages of Hereditary Grand Duke Friedrich Ludwig of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1778-1819).

Congratulations to the couple!

I am curious if someone from the Dutch royal family will attend. Princess Beatrix, Princess Irene and Princess Margriet are daughters of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, Princess of Orange-Nassau, Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.

But this is Mecklenburg-Strelitz so that is not the same branch and more distant (although the line Mecklenburg-Schwerin has become extinct). My guess is that the Dutch royal family will - at best- request a Kamerheer (chamberlain), Hofdame (lady-in-waiting) or Consul to represent them.

Very unlikey but it would be fitting as the Couple lives in Rotterdam.
