I have met a few people who have said that they lived in Paris without learning English. At the same time, I have also heard a few horror stories of people who didn't know French and found themselves a little lost. I would still suggest that anyone moving to a country that they are not familiar with learn the basics of that country. There is really no reason to be completely ignorant.

I don't think that this is the reason of king Constantine learning arabic,if king hussein was speaking english with his own sbillings:king abdallah speaks barly arabic, and he learned it just lastly and still speak it with an interesting accent! so think K.H. would not speak with king C. arabic till making him learning how to speak arabic:) !
I know that there's many royals who learned arabic, like P.alexia of greece and others, learning complex languages like arabic or japenese, is a such as mark and form of prestige and being polyglot is and was a caracter of people of jet-set and "haute société"!:)

Thanks for the info Monalisa!
I don't think Princess Alexia speaks Danish though, laskaris. She might be able to understand some of it, but I've never heard of her or her siblings being able to speak it.

Why is Greek her native language? She's Danish and English. She never lived in Greece.

Obviously King Constantine speaks Greek natively, and Queen Anne Marie adopted the language as her own. It is a widely known fact that all the royal children were brought up speaking Greek. They even went to Greek schools in England. So their native language is very much Greek with English as a very proficient second language.

I find it hard to believe QA adopted Greek as her own when she lived in Greece for what--3 years?

Living or not living in a place doesn't have to mean the difference in knowing or not knowing a language. I haven't lived in my homeland for most of my life, but my family still speaks our native language at home. Besides, all members of the royal familiy have said in interviews that they speak Greek at home.
Also, if you look at the interview I translated on another thread in this forum, you'll see that QAM gave the interview in Greek!

Yes, she is part Danish. That really has nothing to do with what languages she knows. Greek is her native language whether or not you personally consider the Greek Royal Family Greek.

Yeah, and the rest of her is German and English. So my question remains unanswered---why would she speak Greek? She's lived in London most of her life.

Why German. German was almost forbidden at the danish court after 2. world war.
at court they spoke danish and english and when the got married she learned greek.
why is that so hard to understand.
