February 24,1563 death of Francis, Duke of Guise. Francis was the maternal uncle of Mary Queen of Scots. He and his brother Charles enjoyed political power when Mary was married to Francis II. This ended shortly after she was widowed. He was injured during an attempt to take back Orleans from the Hugenot forces of Conde and died six days later.

The murder of the Duke de Guise caused a life long vendetta between his widow ,Anna d'Este and the Huguenot leader Gaspard de Coligny and Anna also fell out with the Huguenot queen of Navarre,Jeanne d'Albret.

Yeah Anne was not a woman to be crossed and seemed to have nine lives unlike the men in her family. She was actually the granddaughter of Lucretia Borgia as her father Ercole was Lucretias son by her third husband. Anna seemed to have some in common with her grandmother.

She is suspected of ordering the assasination attempt on Coligny that signalled the start of st Bartholomew massacre. Though the queen mother was also a suspect. Coligny was killer during the massacre by a group led by Anna’s son.

Following Francis death she married the Duke of Nemours who she had two sons with. She held a lot of political power during and after. She was a powerful player in the catholic league. It is said she was involved in ordering the assasination of Henry III after he had two of her Guise sons executed. She made peace with Henry IV when he converted back to Catholicism and was part of his wife’s court. She spent her life building the positions of her children from both marriages. She was buried with her second husband.

Anne d'Este is a highly fascinating figure, like her mother she maintained good relationship with Queen Catherine who it seems enjoyed playing them off against their haughty cousin queen of Navarre.

March 18 1555- birth of Francis, Duke of Anjou and Alencon. He was eighth of 10 children of Henry II and Catherine de Medicci. He was their youngest son and only son who reached adulthood who was also not King of France (Louis died in infancy, the other 3 sons were Francis II, Charles IX and Henry III). He died though 5 years before his brother Henry III.

He was born Hercule. But he had a slightly twisted spine and had pocked face from small pox at eight. He chose to change his name to Francis in honor of his older brother Francis II when he was confirmed. He became heir to the throne at the age of 20, in 1575, dying nine years later.

In 1575 he had a falling out with his brother Henry and his mother. They feared he would join the Protestant rebels and he did. He joined the forces of the Prince of Conde. He and the prince of Conde joined the forces of the King of Navarre who has escaped the court as well. Eventually in 1576 the piece of Monsieur was reached and through secret treaties, many protestants were rewarded. Francis was made Duke of Anjou.

He was the only one of Elizabeth I's courters who actually did it in person. He was 24 and the queen was 46. They actually became quite close, and she called him her Frog, likely due to an earring he wore. It was not popular in England as he was a catholic. But due to his support and protection of the Hugenots, it was continued to be pursued for years. Elizabeth was genuinely fond of him and flirted, knowing he was likely her last courter. It ended in 1581. From a poem she wrote him, it seemed she may have wed him.

He went to the Netherlands where he was named the new sovereign. He was not popular as a French papist. He tried to take control of the Flemish cities. He personally led the attack on Antwerp where his forces were destroyed and he narrowly escaped with his life.

His mother actually wrote she wished he died young and had not led so many men to death. He caught malaria and returned to Paris where he was reunited with his brother Henry III. He died three months after his return.

March 26, 1554 birth of Charles of Lorraine , Duke of Mayenne. He was the second son and third child of Francis, Duke of Guise and Anne d'Este. His mother was the daughter of Ercole II D'este and Renee of France making him the great-grandson of Louis XII. His father was the brother of Marie of Guise, and Uncle of Mary Queen of Scots.

his siblings:
-Henry I Duke of Guise: was founder of the Catholic league, trying to stop Henry of Navarre from coming to the throne. He was assassinated by bodyguards of Henry III.He was married to Catherine of Cleves. Catherine was a first cousin of Henry of Navarre, and sister in law to the Prince of Conde. The couple had 14 children and he was succeeded by his son Charles.
-Catherine: married Louis, Duke of Montpensier.
-Louis II, Cardonal of Guise: He was assassinated due to his support of his bother Henry, the day after Henry. His bastard son Louis would be legimtized and make Prince of Lexin. Louis married Henriette de Lorraine daughter of Francis II of Lorraine and Claude of France.
-Antoine died at 3
-Francois died at 14
-Maximillien died at

He also had three half siblings. His mother Anne married Jacques, Duke of Nemours 3 years after Charles' father died, in 1566. He was an ally. They had 2 sons and 1 daughter.
-Charles Emmanuel-he quarrelled over making peace with Henry IV with Charles. He attempted to gain independence for his land from the crown. He was imprisoned by the archbishop of Lyon but escaped. He died unmarried and without any children.
-Marguerite died at age three
-Henry- succeeded his brother as duke in 1595. He married Anne of Lorraine, daughter of Charles de Lorraine, Duke of Aumale. He had three sons, but he was succeeded by all three. His youngest son died without children, and the Duchy reverted to the crown. A niece inherited one of his lower titles.

Charles was off fighting the Turks when the St Bartholomew massacre happened. He was a supporter of it though and he accompanied Henry III when he went to Poland to become king. He had been named a peer of the realm before they left. He returned to France where he was a loyal supporter of his brother Henry. After the murder of his two brothers, he was the new head of the Catholic league in France.

After the death of Henry III there were calls for him to claim to the throne. He instead backed Cardinal Charles de Borbon, son of Charles IV de Bourbon, duke of Vendôme. The argument made was that with the death of Henry IIII, the claim should pass to the Borbon-Vendome line for which Charles was the senior claimant. And as a catholic, unlike Henry IV, his claim was supported by many nobles and foreign catholic rulers. Charles had the backing of the Duke of Parma and King Philip II of Spain but he had his doubts about the intentions of Philip.

When the cardinal died, again there was a push for him to be king. But he lacked the charm and political prowess of his brother Henry. Or the popularity of the people. He would have relied on Philip II to put him on the throne. While claiming to support Philip II's idea to put Infanta Isabella Clara Eugenie on the throne (Isabella was Philip's daughter with Elizabeth Valois) he made peace with Henry IV temporarily. Henry IV converted to catholocism. The peace didn't last and he proceeded to try and take Dijon but was defeated by Henry IV. They made peace in 1595 with Charles being given Chalon-sur-Saône, his son Henry was made governor of Ile-de-France and the king paid an edemnity to him.

He was married to Henriette of Savoy. Henriette was the daughter of Honorat II of Savoy. She was Marquis of Villars following her father.

they had four children:

-Renee- she married Mario Sforza and had children.
-Henri- succeeded his father as Duke of Mayenne. He was married to Henriette daughter of Louis Gonzaga, Duke of Nevers. He died childless and was succeeded by his nephew.
-Charles Emmanuel- count of Sommerive. Died at 28 unmarried.
-Catherine- married Charles I Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua. Charles was the brother of Catherine's sister in law Henriette. The couple had six children. Her second son Charles succeeded his Uncle Henri as Duke of Mayenne.

Henri's wife ,Henriette de Savoie was a Dame d'honneur to Catherine de Médicis who attended the wedding as did Henriette's mother Jeanne de Foix, Vicontesse de Castillon .

Henri and Henriette died a few days within each of other

Henri :October 3, 1611
Henriette :October 14th,1611

Both were buried together at the Cathedral Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais de Soissons.
