The Comtesse de Paris was born Princess Isabel of Orleans-Braganza. Her father was the Crown Prince of Brazil, but renounced his claim in order to marry her mother, an Hungarian countess of unequal birth; thus their children and descendants are styled Princes/Princesses of Orleans-Braganza rather than of Brazil. Her grandfather, Gaston d'Orleans, Comte d'Eu, was a prince of the House of Orleans who himself renounced his rights to the French succession in order to marry Crown Princess Isabel of Brazil, then tried to get his rights back after the Brazilian monarchy fell in 1889. He and his descendants were not restored to their place in the line of succession, but were accorded precedence after all other lines of the House of Orleans at functions. They are Brazilian dynasts, however, and not French nor Portuguese.

HRH Princess Isabelle Comtesse De Paris. If the Royal Family of France still reigned Princess Isabelle would have been Queen Consort and then Queen Mother of France.

From www.imperialereal.com:
MADAME THE COUNTESS OF PARIS MADAME The Countess of Paris (de jure Queen Consort of France - Most Christian Majesty), 1931 to 1999. The August Lady Isabelle became a widow in 1999. She is now the Queen Mother of France. In fact, she is knnown and signs COMTESSE DE PARIS. In the French Royal system, the style of Madame is above all the others. Dona Isabel Maria Amélia Luiza Victoria Teresa Joana (Michaela Gabriela Raphaela Gonzaga) de Orleans e Bragança e Dobrzensky-von-Dobrzenicz, Princess of Orleans-and-Braganza, was born in the Castle of Eu, Normandy, on 13 august 1911. She married in the Palace Orleans in Palermo, Italy - a property of the House of France inherited from Queen Marie-Amélie, Louis-Phlippe´s wife -, the 8th april, 1931, H.R.H. Lord Henri Robert Ferdinand Marie (Louis Philippe) d'Orléans et Orléans, Prince of Bourbon-Orleans, then the Dauphin of Viennois, afterwards The Count of Paris and Head of the Royal Rouse of France. He was born at Nouvion-en-Thierache house, on 5 july 1908 and died in Paris, on 19 june 1999 and was the son of H.R.H. Lord Jean (*1874 †1940), Prince of Orleans and afterwards The Duke of Guise and Head of the Royal House of France and of H.R.H. Lady Isabelle (*1878 †1961), née Princess and Dughter of France, Princess of (Bourbon-)Orleans. The Count of Paris died after he commemorated comme il faut his 90th birthday. Prince Lord Henri ascended to the Headship of the House of France in 1940, with his father´s death and became de jure His Most Christian Majesty the Lord Henri VI, by the Grace of God King of France and of Navarre, Elder Son of the Church. The Princess speaks French, Portuguese and German and is a great writer. In 1978, she wrote "Tout m'est bonheur", a detailed self-biography concerning herself and her origins, as well as that of her children, the eleven Princes and Princesses of France. In 1981, she published "Les Chemins Creux"; in 1989, she published in Brazil "Contos de minhas terras", which relates the old legends from Brazil, France and Bohemia. In 1991, she gave to the public "Blanche de Castille, mon Aïeule", a biography of the venerable Queen of France who was born an Infanta of Castile (King Saint Louis IX´s mother). And she finally published in 1993 the biography of the unhappy French Queen: "Moi, Marie Antoinette". The Countess of Paris commemorated her 90th birthday in 2001 with almost all of her relatives at her beloved Castle of Eu. The Mayor of Eu rended homage to MADAME, denominating ISABELLE D´ORLÉANS ET BRAGANCE the place around the Castle. |

She was a great lady, very stylish and elegant at the same time. She would have made a wonderful Queen of France.

It probably is way off topic on this thread but I wonder if our friends in Paris know more about the auction of the personal effects of the late Mme La Contesse de Paris. Her children and grandson Robert are putting up for auction what items she left. I believe the auction is for the 15th of August at Christie's.
Thank you. |
