Default Thank You

Thank You for posting the photo of the lilies of France. I noticed the beautiful British Royal Coat of Arms pictured above. Britain was lucky to have held on to such a magnificent heritage!

I know there is a crown worn by the Dauphin in the coronation of his father (Charles X) in existence - I have pictures also.
Any light?
There is Charles V's sword in the Louvre and Charles X's regalia are in the Chancellerie (Minister of Justice palace), place Vendôme. I saw both.

a beautiful design of french royal arms :
Héraldique européenne - European heraldry - Free coats - Free pictures
- on the left list click on "Armoriaux", then "Saint Esprit"
- on the Saint-Esprit page , click on "Armorial" : you will see King Henri the IIIrd arms.

If you like french coat of arms, you may have a look here :

Default nuts and bolts of Versailles

Hello everyone.

I'm trying to do some research for a story I'm writing. I've been looking for specifics about Versailles in the time of Louis XVI. I'm talking things such as: where would courtiers (but not necessarily duchesses and princes/princesses of the blood) live? How many rooms would they occupy? When/where would these people eat? How many servants would someone with lower rank at court be allowed? Et cetera ad infinitum. Maybe there is a good book that can help out with the daily life of Versailles?

And one thing I am having trouble finding is a floorplan of Versailles. I'd just like a general idea of what was where, but I can't find it online! Maybe I'm just inept.

This forum has a lot of information about Versailles and the French Monarchy, I'm not sure if you have to be a member to view the threads, scroll down and you'll see the thread French Royalty, I have seen the floor plans of Versailles there.

Here is another forum, it is mainly about Marie-Antoinette but there is a section about Versailles and the people of Versailles

Thanks, the links are great!

I found a thread discussing apartments of Versailles, but the images on it wouldn't work--I was wondering if they worked for anyone else?

Versailles appartments

If not, I'll see if I can get on that board and ask for them to be updated.

You are welcome for the links.

it has been awhile since I had been to that thread on Versailles. The photos aren't showing up for me either now, just X's.
I'll see if I can find anything else.

I came across this floor plan on a message board about Versailles, it is in French though, when you click on the numbers it tells you the room's name and gives a photo of the room.

If you don't speak French you could go to freetranslation.com to have it translated,

Les appartements du rez de chaussée de Versailles

It is the best I could find for now.

If you are writing a story for professional purposes why haven't you tried the Royal Archives at Versailles? Click here to access the site. Once there scroll down until you see this:

You know have a contact number and so forth to help you advance your research.

If you don't speak French there is an English page. You might want to contact the head archivist. Perhaps he could help you with your research. They do speak English so you won't have a problem.

Second, you might want to check out JSTOR. This is the place for scholars, professional historians, researchers, graduate, and undergraduate students who are looking for specific journals, articles, primary and secondary sources, etc. I've used JSTOR for my thesis and other writings as well.

Finally, try Archive.org for more detailed information.

If you need more help let us know.

I have came across these floorplans of Versailles. I always thought that Marie-Antoinette used the Queen's apartment but another floor plan has her rooms listed on the ground floor the other side of the palace.

the Queen's apartments, first floor:
Les grands appartements du chateau de Versailles

Marie-Antoinette's apartments ground floor (these aren't the Dauphine's rooms)

Does anyone know which rooms she actually used? I always thought the Queen's apartments but the second floor plans has me a little confused.

I have no idea which one's Marie Atoinette used, though it seems odd she'd be allotted only three rooms.

This doesn't seem to be the entire image--is there more of it, Pinkcat?

that is all the image, that I can find anyway. I was just curious to the Queen's apartments, because I always asumed that she used the Queen's apartments on the first floor, then the other floor plans shows a second set of apartments on the ground floor. I'm wondering now if one was the state apartments that she would use for official occasions and the other may be her private apartments.

Before I go to the trouble of doing it, perhaps I should ask and make sure:

I got a book when I went to Versailles in September (woohoo!) and it has very nice images of the entire floorplan. To the mods, is it acceptable to scan it in and share?
