Prince Hans-Adam II On August 15th 2004 H.S.H. Prince Hans-Adam II entrusts his son H.S.H. Hereditary Prince Alois as his representative with the exercise of all sovereign rights pertaining to him, in accordance with the Liechtenstein Constitution.
Prince Hans Adam II was born on 14 February 1945 as the eldest son of Prince Hanz Joseph II of Liechtenstein and Princess Gina. The name Hans Adam forms an appropriate link between the past and present. Prince Hans-Adam I, who reigned from 1699 to 1712, was the founder of the Principality Liechtenstein, thanks to his purchases of the Lordship of Schellenberg (1699) and the County of Vaduz (1712). Prince Hans-Adam II and his four brothers and sisters grew up with their parents at Vaduz Castle. He attended primary school in Vaduz and joined the Vaduz scout troop. Like his father before him, Prince Hans Adam II then entered the Schottengymnasium high school in Vienna in 1956. In 1960 he transferred to the Gymnasium (high school) in Zuoz, where he graduated with both the Swiss and German high school diplomas in 1965. Afterwards, Prince Hans Adam II worked as a trainee at a bank in London. In addition to his native tongue, German, the Prince speaks English and French. In the autumn of 1965, Prince Hans Adam II began his business and economics studies at the University of St. Gallen. He completed his studies in 1969 with a Licentiate. On 30 July 1967, Prince Hans Adam II married Countess Marie Kinsky of Wchinitz and Tettau (born 14 April 1940 in Prague). They have four children
In 1984, the 45th year of his reign, Prince Franz Josef II appointed Prince Hans Adam II as his permanent representative and conferred upon him the mandate to administer the business of the State, in accordance with article 13 of the Constitution. On 13 November 1989, upon the death of his father Prince Franz Josef II, Prince Hans Adam II assumed the regency. Already during his time as the Reigning Prince's representative, Prince Hans Adam II was particularly engaged on behalf of an independent Liechtenstein foreign policy. Under his leadership, Liechtenstein succeeded in joining the UN in 1990 and the EEA in 1995. © Government Spokesperson’s Office • 9490 Vaduz • office@liechtenstein.li 1. Prince Hans-Adam II 2. Princess Marie was born on 14 April 1940 in Prague as Countess Kinsky of Wchinitz and Tettau, the fourth of seven children of Count Ferdinand Carl Kinsky of Wchinitz and Tettau and Countess Henriette, born Countess of Ledebur-Wicheln. The family was expelled in 1945 like many others from the former Czechoslovakia and fled to Germany.
After the family's escape from Czechoslovakia, Princess Marie attended primary school in Ering am Inn from 1946 to 1950. She then went to the boarding school of the Lioba Sisters in the Wald Cloister in Württemberg for eight years, graduating from the Realgymnasium (high school). In 1957, she spent an extended period of time in England in order to study the English language. For six semesters, she attended the Academy of Applied Arts, from where she graduated with a diploma. After a short stay in Paris to improve her knowledge of French, she worked as a commercial artist for a printer in Dachau until her engagement in 1965. The interests of the Princess focus mostly on the social institutions of the country. She is President of the Liechtenstein Red Cross and President of the Society for Therapeutic-Pedagogical Aid. She is also interested in arts and culture and is engaged in matters relating to education and upbringing. Through their participation in all sorts of public events, the Prince and the Princess demonstrate their deep bond with Liechtenstein and their interest in the political, economic, cultural and sporting development of the Principality. © Government Spokesperson’s Office • 9490 Vaduz • office@liechtenstein.li

On August 15th 2004 H.S.H. Prince Hans-Adam II entrusts his son H.S.H. Hereditary Prince Alois as his representative with the exercise of all sovereign rights pertaining to him, in accordance with the Liechtenstein Constitution.
Hereditary Prince Alois was born in Zurich on 11 June 1968 as the eldest son of Prince Hans Adam II and Princess Marie of Liechtenstein and was christened Alois Philipp Maria. This name was given to the Prince in memory of his great-grandfather, Prince Alois of Liechtenstein, the father of then reigning Prince Franz Josef II. Prince Alois spent his youth at Vaduz Castle with his parents, siblings, and grandparents. Like his father, he attended primary school in Vaduz-Ebenholz, and he entered the Liechtenstein Gymnasium (high school) in 1979. He graduated in the spring of 1987 (high school diploma type B, with an emphasis on literary history). He subsequently entered the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst (United Kingdom), where he completed his officer's training. On receiving his commission as second lieutenant, he served for six months with the Coldstream Guards in Hong Kong and London. In October 1988, Prince Alois enrolled as a student of law at the University of Salzburg. He completed these studies in the spring of 1993 with a master's degree. From September 1993 to May 1996, he worked at a London auditing company. He then moved back to Vaduz, where he is now responsible for various parts of the Princely assets. As the eldest son of the Reigning Prince, Hereditary Prince Alois is designated successor to the throne by the Law on the Princely House. For this reason, he has undergone preparation since early childhood for his future office as Head of State. He takes part in political discussions and consultations with representatives of the Government and assumes representative duties. On 15 August 1990, on the occasion of the oath of allegiance, Reigning Prince Hans Adam II and Hereditary Prince Alois jointly swore to uphold the Constitution. On 3 July 1993, Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein married Duchess Sophie in Bavaria. On 3 July 1993, Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein married Duchess Sophie in Bavaria. Duchess Sophie was born in Bavaria on 28 October 1967 in Munich, Bavaria, as the eldest of the five daughters of Duke Max and Duchess Elizabeth. She was christened Sophie Elizabeth Marie Gabrielle and is a direct descendant of the last King of Bavaria. Ludwig III (1845-1921) was her great-great-grandfather.
Hereditary Princess Sophie spent her childhood with her parents and sisters in Wildbad Kreuth, where she also attended the first years of primary school. From 1978 to 1980, she attended the Girls' Primary Boarding School of the English Lady in Heiligenstatt and then transferred to the Girls' Secondary Boarding School Hohenburg in Lenggries. In 1984, she entered the Adolf Weber Gymnasium (high school) in Munich and graduated in 1988. After graduating, she stayed in London for a few months, where she attended seminars at the Inchbald School of Interior Design. She was particularly interested in the various styles of interior decorating. Hereditary Princess Sophie studied history and English language and literature at the Catholic University in Eichstätt. She married Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein on 3 July 1993. They have four children

I read in a magazine that Philip Niarchos (Stavros Niarchos's father) is trying to set Princess Maria Anunciata or Princess Marie-Astrid of Liechtenstein up with Stavros. Who are these princesses and does anybody have any photos of them? Thanks!

Thank you Warren. The two girls seem to be very pretty. They don't seem to be media darlings though by the lack of pictures to me. Is it because the Royal Family controls much of the press in Liechtenstein?
Another question (sorry!)...do the two princesses have HRH or HH titles? Or are they merely Princesses? Last edited by Warren; 02-04-2006 at 12:14 AM. Reason: merge |

There is not much coverage of the Liechtensteins in the media because they are an extremely private and low-key family.

Heidi P:My guess is that Liechtenstein doesn't seem to be a very well known country and since it seems that most people aren't as interested in royalty anymore I guess it has become even harder to hear anything about the family.

I wish we could see more pictures of Liechteinstein family. The only time I was able to see all Alois and Sophie's children was National Day last year. Their pics were posted in the thread about Alois' family. Their kids were really adorable.:)
Also P Nicolaus children look very nice. Especially Josef Emanuel. He looks sort of like William. I wonder how old is prince Nikolaus. He looks like he has white hair. |
