It is just customary for members of the Princely family to live outside of Liechtenstein. Until a few generations ago, the sovereign Prince didn't even live in Liechtenstein. Perhaps it's size has something to do with it.

The Princely family does occasionally have "glittering" royal parties (mainly in Vienna) but they are also private family parties...No press.:)

Liechtenstein does not have a royal family. They have a princely family. Also, the family is enourmou. Over 100 people with the title of Prinz/Prinzessin von und zu Liechtenstein.

What's the difference between a Royal family and a Princely family? I thought that they were the same except for a Princely monarchy doesn't not have a King/Queen, but rather a Prince or Grand Duke as the head of (in this case regarding Liechtenstein) state.

If I'm wrong please tell me...

:)

As I know so far Liechtenstein Royal Family is the wealthiest royal family in Europe (refer to: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/360508.stm) but not in the world..the wealthiest royal in the world is Brunei Sultan (royal family) refer to http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/374776.stm. Brunei sultanat also has quiet small size but rich in Oil and gas sources.

Thank you for who ever started this thread.
I always like to know more about this almost anonymous Royal Group.

I hadn't realized there were more than 100 individuals who could call themselves prince/princess. Almost dilutes the situation, wouldn't you think ?

With Prince Nikolaus, at one time he was Ambassador to the EU .... is he still that ? And does he still "reside" in Brussels ?

The wealth that they lost, was in Austria, or points east, and how come ?

Nikolaus and Margaretha live in Belgium. I believe he's the ambassador of Liechtenstein in Belgium.

Europe's only Absolute Monarchy

From the BBC who can explain better than I:

"After a campaign which was at times bitterly divisive the people voted in March 2003 in a constitutional referendum to give Prince Hans-Adam sweeping new political powers. The outcome was decisive with just over 64% in favour of the changes. In effect, the referendum made Liechtenstein Europe's only absolute monarchy. It gave Prince Hans-Adam the power to hire and fire the government, despite publicly-expressed fears that the development could usher in dictatorship. "

I know that Prince Rainier in Monaco has some pretty wide reaching poweres, but I know in the past they have been scaled back (by his own doing). Liechtenstein has taken a most decidedly opposite direction than most.
