His Royal Highness Sultan of Johor Al-Mutawakkil Alallah Tuanku Al-Haj Sultan Iskandar Ibni Almarhum Sultan Ismail officially launched the South Johor Economic Region (SJER) in Johor Baru, the capital of the state of Johor yesterday.
His consort Her Royal Highness Sultanah Zanariah Binti Tengku Ahmad was present as well. http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp...131&sec=nation Since the administrator of the board has prohibited me from posting pictures which are not mine, here's a link to see the Sultan and Sultanah http://fotoweb.bernama.com/ |

The title 'King of Malaysia' is strictly incorrect for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. It is actually 'Paramount Ruler'.
The states' names that are often given is in the Malayan form. The English form for 'Terengganu' is 'Trengganu' & 'Johor' is 'Johore' in English. Aidan. |

Without needlessly labouring the point, your Wikipedia link demonstrates that the term "King" is indeed common usage:
Yang di-Pertuan Agong, a Malay title usually translated as "Supreme Head", "Supreme Ruler" or "Paramount Ruler", is the official title of the constitutional head of state of the federation of Malaysia. The position is often categorized as "King" in English.

I agree with that. If anyone here reads the Star newspaper, a Malaysian local newspaper also uses the term King to refer to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. The purpose of this board is to share information about the Malaysian monarchy with friends outside Malaysia and in Malaysia itself, so that everyone can understand and appreciate this monarchy. Not everyone understands Malay language, so we must make it easier for everyone to know about Malaysian monarchy.
In this news, the word King and Yang di-Pertuan Agong are used interchangeably:- http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp...074&sec=nation So there's no wrong at all to use the term King to refer to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Let's make this board a very nice place for everyone to begin and flourish their understanding of the unique system of monarchy practised in Malaysia. |

On the Berita Harian newspaper today, it was mentioned that Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin and Sultanah Nur Zahirah are still in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.
They are expected to return to the state of Terengganu on 8 November 2006. It is expected that tens of thousands people of Terengganu will be welcoming the Royal Couple as an expression of their joyfulness over the election of Sultan Mizan as the 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong. This report is unfortunately not available online. |

Please be reminded here that the Oath Of Office And Signing Of The Declaration Of Office Ceremony for the 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin and his Deputy, the Sultan of Kedah will take place on 13 December 2006.
From my observation in the ceremonies for the previous Kings, usual practice had it that The Sultan and Sultanah will be welcomed at the Kuala Lumpur airport. (It depends from which state they come from, for example last time Tuanku Jaafar from Negeri Sembilan came by train and the Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin of Selangor arrived only by car as Selangor is very near to Kuala Lumpur). They will be ushered to the Parliament House to be given Welcoming Ceremony at the Parliament Square (Medan Parlimen) with Prime Minister, government officials, diplomats etc attending. The Sultan and Sultanah would be wearing their State Ceremonial Outfits but without the Sultanah wearing her tiara. Then, The Oath of Office And Signing Of The Declaration of Office Ceremony will be held at the Istana Negara (National Palace) in Kuala Lumpur. All the 9 Malay Rulers or their representatives will be present to witness the Swearing In of the King. All would be wearing their respective State Ceremonial Outfits. Details of the Oath of Office Ceremony http://www.malaysianmonarchy.org.my/...bi/rk5/rk5.htm Then, 6 months later or one year later, the most awaited Installation Ceremony (Istiadat Pertabalan Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong) with a lot of pomps and pageantry and the observance of unique Malay customs and traditions will be held. Ephram,do you know who will be the Regent of Trengganu when the Sultan is in Kuala Lumpur serving his 5 year term as Yang di-Pertuan Agong?
Warren, the Malaysian monarchy is unique among British Commonwealth monarchies in electing their monarch, but basing it upon a retational system.I have heard that Western Samoa will elect their Head of State for a 5 year term from the 4 Royal Families of Western Samoa in the same way as in Malaysia after the current Head of State,Malietoa Tanumafili II passes away. HH is 93 years old, so there may be some news from Western Samoa sooner rather than later. In any case, certainly deserving of a thread of its own.
To Ephram: thank you for keeping us informed, and we look forward to the Ceremony on 13 December.

Ephram, have you ever heard of the medal that is referred to here; www.fight4thepjm.org ? What is the name of the medal in English? I am seriously thinking of writing some articles about the various Malaysian Royal Honours Systems on Citizendium, when it is open to the public. The names will be in English, but the Malayan names will also be referred to in the relevant articles.
