Apparantly, Mrs Blair was in the Vatican giving a speech to seminarians when she got a message saying that the Pope could see her for 10 minutes but she'd have to go there and then so really, she didn't have time to change. It was just unfortunate that she happened to be wearing white on that day. I loathe the woman but she was in the right on this occassion.

Polfoto 18-05-2006 Workers prepare Poland's holiest shrine and pilgrimage place of Jasna Gora for the following week's visit of Pope Benedict XVI, in Czestochowa, Poland on Thursday, May 18, 2006. Dozens of thousands are expected for the May 26 prayer that the Pope is to lead at the 14th century Pauline monks cloister that house the holy icon of the Black Madonna. Benedict will be in Poland, the homeland of the late Pope John Paul II, from between May 25 and 28

OTOH Joseph Ratzinger has never been one to be too keen on protocoll and formalities, so I don't think he minded much, especially as he knew that Mrs. Blair had no time to change. But maybe officials should have a black mantilla and some sort of overdress ready for a case like that, because it is not pleasant for the guest to be confronted with the pictures of such a faux pas. |

The thing is, Cherie would have had a black outfit with her just in case something happened in the UK and she had to come back in black.
