Anti Monarchist Attacks King's Residence
Monday: July 3, 2006

Pro-democracy tensions are rising in the tiny Pacific island kingdom of Tonga ahead of this week's celebrations for their king's 88th birthday.
And Radio Australia reports that the unrest isn't confined to Tonga. At the weekend, the royal family's Auckland residence was attacked by an anti-monarchy protester.
Anti-monarchist Alani Taione drove a car into the locked gates of the Royal Family's Auckland residence and set it alight. The ailing king and his family were at home at the time, protected by guards and well away from the disturbance at the front gate.
Police arrested Alani Taione, charging him with arson and property damage.
"I call on the prime minister, get out of the Parliament and the people will rule from now on. And I call on the people of Tonga, continue and fight, don't give any chance to them. And what happened in East Timor now is going to happen in Tonga if the king and the prime minister not get out of the government. The people will rule and the truth will set the people of Tonga free," Taione said.

Unfortunately that is the reality of driving on the San Francisco bay area roads and freeways. My condolences to the families and people of Tonga. Sorry that their visit to our part of the world ended so tragic.

Tongan Order of Succession

Hello,

What a tragedy for Tonga and the United States. It is doubly awful when an honoured visitor is killed in your land.

I know next to nothing about the Tongan Royal Family except for the late Queen Salote. Was this prince the heir to the throne?
What is the current order of succession in Tonga?

Thank you. :)

Larry

Prince Tu'ipelehake was the King's nephew and not the direct heir to the throne of Tonga.

Thank you, Benjamin for your quick reply.

Do you know who is next in line? Are there sons and daughters of The King? Grandchildren?
I understand that The King is very old now. Who's next?

Thank you.

Larry

You are very welcome, Larry.

Here is the line of succession (this only encompasses the current king's descendants, but there are more people in line):
  1. HRH Crown Prince Tupouto'a, king's eldest son (b. 1948)
  2. HRH Prince 'Ulukalala Lavaka-Ata, king's youngest son (b. 1959)
  3. HRH Prince Siaosi, #2's eldest son (b. 1985)
  4. HRH Prince 'Uiliame, #2's youngest son (b. 1988)
  5. HRH Princess Angelika, #2's only daughter (b. 1983)
  6. HRH Princess Salote, only daughter of king (b. 1951)

And you're right, His Majesty is very old (88, and believe me, at his weight I think that is absolutely amazing) and in not too good health.

Royals Die In Car Crash

Does anyone know anything about the Tongan royals who died in a car crash in California a couple of days ago?

My Condolences to the people of the Kingdom of Tonga

How sad..I didn't know nothing about it until I came across this info, here at the Royal Forums...It's very tragic, since Tonga's Kingdom is a very nice place in our npwadays troubled world. I heard about Tongan typicalhospitality to foreign people, and about its very creative and tasteful gastronomy.

As Mark Onehi said, "My Condolences to the people of the Kingdom of Tonga". :(

Tongan Princess Siu'ilikutapu talks during a news conference at the Tongan royal estate in Hillsborough, Calif., Friday, July 14, 2006. Unfortunately, it isn't the only case of a polynesian royal dying on the US west coast. In 1891, King Kalakaua of Hawai'i also died while visiting San Francisco, although of slightly less tragic causes.

Thank you for your interesting photos, Weinyer. They are truly sad...

Do you know if some Royal from the Pacific Islands attended the Funeral? I think I saw a woman with a little crown of flowers with the word "Samoa" written in it. I also noticed (or I least I suppose I noticed her), the Maori Queen among the people who followed the coffins. She is just behind the woman with the "Samoan" flower crown...
