Unfortunately, it isn't the only case of a polynesian royal dying on the US west coast. In 1891, King Kalakaua of Hawai'i also died while visiting San Francisco, although of slightly less tragic causes.

Thank you for your interesting photos, Weinyer. They are truly sad...

Do you know if some Royal from the Pacific Islands attended the Funeral? I think I saw a woman with a little crown of flowers with the word "Samoa" written in it. I also noticed (or I least I suppose I noticed her), the Maori Queen among the people who followed the coffins. She is just behind the woman with the "Samoan" flower crown...

Vanesa
The article from Matangi Tonga said that there are foreign dignitaries, but do not mention names, but am sure there are representatives from Samoa and Fiji since
there are royal and noble houses from there…here are some more photos from

I would imagine that there were members of the royal families of Uvea, Sigave and Alo, the three kingdoms that make up the Wallis and Futuna islands.

Default King "gravely ill"

The Sydney Daily Telegraph reported today that King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV "is gravely ill in a New Zealand hospital".

The King has been in Auckland for treatment for poor health since April, returning to Tonga to celebrate his 88th birthday on July 4.
