The couple are indeed second cousins.

HM Queen Salote Tupou III (1900-1965) ->
HM Sia'osi Taufa'ahau Tupou IV (1918-2006) -> HM King Tupou VI (b.1959) -> HRH Crown Prince Siaosi Tuku’aho (b.1985)

HM Queen Salote Tupou III (1900-1965) -> HRH Prince Sione Ngu Manumata'ongo Tupou (1922-1999) -> HRH Princess Sinaitakala Fakafanua (b.1953) -> Hon Sinaitakala Tu’imatamoana’i Fanakavakilangi (b.1987)

[QUOTE=Biri;1441014]Tonga is probably the only Christian monarchy when mariages are arranged.

The marriage of Prince Charles and Diana was widely believed to have been arranged mainly to stop Charles marrying Camilla.

This is the wrong thread to get into a debate about this, so if you'd like to continue it, we can probably find a better place to do it, but I just wanted to point out this is factually inaccurate. Camilla was already married before Charles began courting Diana.

I'm not trying to get into a debate, all I'm pointing out is that Tonga isn't the only Christian monarchy that has arranged marriage. The queen mother and Diana's grandmother, lady Fermoy, were friends and it's widely believed that they were instrumental in the two being brought together. Camilla's marriage was over in all but name by that time.

Even the Bishop that married Charles and Diana said the marriage was arranged. Now, who did the arranging, was not stated.

They're "double" second cousins, each sharing two sets of great-grandparents. The bride's parents are both first cousins of the King.

Is there any information as to when the coronation of the new King of Tonga will take place?

One of the foremost experts on Tongan history, Dr Elizabeth Wood-Ellem, has died in Melbourne, two days before her 82nd birthday.
Bessie, as she was known, wrote the definitive biography of Queen Salote, and maintained her close links with Tonga all her life.

The 18th of March will mark the first anniversary of the passing of King George Tupou V. Maybe the coronation of King Tupou VI will be announced after that?

That could be the reason although I would bet economics also has something to do with it. The last coronation was quite lavish and expensive for such a poor country.

Good call. I think I have read somewhere that the coronation in 2008 cost 2.5 million!

The King of Tonga is in the UK, the Court Circular says. He arrived on Saturday afternoon & was greeted by Baroness Northover.
