Tongan royal cousins' marry plans shock

Tongan royal cousins' marry plans shock | Stuff.co.nz
Two of Tonga's royal cousins have announced they are to marry each other.
The planned wedding of two closely related people has caused shock within Tongan circles but has long been feared as the strict rules around who royals can marry has led to a smaller pool of eligible candidates.
The Royal Palace in courtly language says that the second in line to the throne, 26-year-old Prince Siaosi Tuku'aho - or better known as 'Ulukalala - is "courting" his cousin, 24-year-old Lady Sinaitakala Fakafanua.
They are cousins on both sides of their families and have largely spent their lives together in the small royal world of Nuku'alofa.

Queen Mother of Tonga celebrates with West Valley congregation | Deseret News
The congregation of the Tongan United Methodist Church here accomplished something so impressive recently, the Queen Mother of Tonga herself came all the way to Utah to celebrate with them.
[...]
The 85-year-old queen mother addressed the congregation during a prayer and rededicatory service in the building's chapel. Men and women in traditional dress sang and played instruments during the 90-minute service conducted entirely in Tongan.
After the rededication, the 300-plus member crowd took the festivities outside, where youth danced and sang and the congregation feasted at tables lined with roasted pigs and elaborate fruit displays.
The queen mother received a key to the city on Wednesday from West Valley City Mayor Mike Winder and met with Gov. Gary Herbert on Thursday. She plans to stay in Utah for about two weeks.

King George Tupou V | Tongan Monarch Attends Kings... | Stuff.co.nz
King George Tupou V of Tonga celebrated 50 years since leaving primary school by hosting a luncheon at Cotter House in Remuera where he honoured the only remaining two teachers and one nurse still surviving from that period.
The monarch is in Auckland for the 50th reunion of his class from Kings School.
On Friday he presented honours to two teachers, a school nurse and two former classmates at Cotter House - a Regency style luxury hotel.
[...] Asked today what memories he has of boarding in New Zealand the King replied, "only good ones, many friends. But it is unfair to waffle on about those times".

Tonga marriage raises issues of genes and cost | Stuff.co.nz
Two of Tonga's royal cousins are getting married, prompting debate on whether the gene pool is becoming too narrow.
Two great-grandchildren of the late Queen Salote will wed on May 5.
Second-in-line to the throne, 27-year-old Siaosi Manumataongo 'Alaivahamama'o 'Aho'eitu Konstantin Tuku'aho – and now referred to as Prince 'Ulukalala – will marry 25-year-old Sinaitakala Fakafanua, a lesser member of the royal family.
"They want to keep the royal blood to their own family," veteran pro-democracy politician 'Akilisi Pohiva says.
"They are too close. I do not know about biological effects of two close bloods mixed together, but I think they need new blood from outside."
Tongan royal marriages are always arranged, with love only a part of it, and have to be approved by the monarch, King George Tupou IV.
Successive monarchs have tried to keep marriages within the family, but that has proved difficult, with there being only nine marriageable women and seven single men – now reduced by one on either side.

Mourning for Tongan King officially ends
Quote:
Tongans today can officially get out of their black clothing and stop mourning the late King George Tupou V.
He died in Hong Kong on March 18. While the country would normally mourn a monarch for 100 days, the new King Tupou VI has, without explanation, cut it short. "In accordance with the wishes of His Majesty King Tupou VI regarding the period of State mourning, His Majesty's Cabinet hereby declares that the period of State mourning proclaimed on 19 March, 2012, is hereby revoked, and the new official period of State mourning shall be from Monday, 19 March, 2012, until Saturday, 31 March, 2012, inclusive," chief secretary Busby Kautoke said in a gazette notice.

Tonga is probably the only Christian monarchy when mariages are arranged.

Another Royal Wedding but this time it's marred by controversy as Crown Prince of Tonga marries his cousin
Quote:
Her name is just a little more difficult to pronounce than Kate Middleton. But the new bride of the Crown Prince of Tonga is brushing aside difficulties foreigners have of addressing her, along with questions about whether she should ever have married her cousin. The bride of the Pacific island nation's Crown Prince Tupouto’a Ulukalala is Miss Sinaitakala Tuk’imatamoana ‘I Fanakavakilangi Fakafanua.

I think they are second cousins only. I just read an article that they share the same great-grandparents, not the same grandparents.
