Just saw it on their Instagram account. So lovely!!! Ugyen is often used in the royal family, so there's nothing too surprising about it. But, it's indeed lovely.

:previous: Ugyen is the name of the first dragon king of Bhutan. He was the great-great grandfather of the current king.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ugyen_Wangchuck

He shares the name with his father's half brother (son of Queen Tshering). It also happens to be the name of his mother's paternal grandfather.

Fitting choice. His brother was named after the unifier of Bhutan and now he is named for the first king.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ngawang_Namgyal

The photos are beautiful. So glad I logged in on my coffee break. Have been waiting to hear his name. And I always love seeing photos of this country and this family as well. Its stunning.

The little prince has a cousin with exactly the same name and an uncle with the same name in a different order; so very traditional. Jigme (meaning: fearless) is the name of all but the first Druk Gyalpo - whose name was Ugyen (meaning: crown).

By announcing that their son will be known as 'Ugyen Wangchuck' he will be known by exactly the same name is the first Druk Gyalpo; while their eldest son has the same name as the first Druk Gyalpo's father...

King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the current king, of course descents from these men but Jetsun Pema also descends from the first Druk Gyalpo's father; as she is a descendent of Ugyen Wangchuck's younger sister.

Jigme Namgyal (1825-1881) - Ugyen Wangchuck (1st king/Druk Gyalpo) (1862-1926) - Jigme Wangchuck* (1905-1952) - Jigme Dorji Wangchuck (1929-1972) - Jigme Singye Wangchuck (1955) - Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck (1980)

Jigme Namgyal (1825-1881) - Yeshay Choden - Desho Dorji - Thinley Namgyal* - Sonam Choki - Jetsun Pema (1990)

* Jigme Wangchuck's wives (Phuntso Choden (great-grandmother of the current king) and Pema Dechen) were half-sisters of Thingley Namgyal (Jetsun Pema's maternal grandfather)

The King granted Dashain Tika to representatives of the Hindu Community of Bhutan at the Devi Panchayan Mandir in Thimphu. Tika imbued with Royal blessings have been sent to other dzongkhags for the people across the country. The King offered prayers to the goddess Durga at the Mandir.
Dashain is the most important festival for the Hindu community in Bhutan. On this day, families come together to receive Tika from the head of the family, as a symbol of their blessings and protection. It celebrates the Dharma King Rama’s victory over evil, by invoking the blessings of goddess Durga. Hindus believe that His Majesty, as the Dharma King, is an embodiment of Vishnu, as was King Rama.

Interesting, I didn't realize the King had a connection to the Hindu religion.

Princess Euphelma Choden got married!

Princess Euphelma Choden Wangchuck (b.6 June 1993) [daughter of the previous King of Bhutan Jigme Singye Wangchuck (b.1955) & his fourth wife Queen Mother Sangay Choden (b.1963)] married Dasho Thinlay Norbu (b.24 January 1991) [son of Dhondup Gyaltshen & his wife Sonam Choki] reportedly on 29 October.

The groom is the younger brother of Princess Yeatso Lhamo [wife of Prince Jigme Dorji Wangchuk (b.1986) full brother of the King] and of Queen Jetsum Pema.

The bride is former King's youngest of five daughters and last one who marries.

Well, their father married 4 out of 5 sisters. This generation is doing it a little more modern by having siblings marrying siblings... How many siblings does the queen have left that might marry into the royal family?

Edit: Found the answer to my own question. She is the second oldest of five siblings. Her elder sister already married into the family and now the third sibling (given that Jetsun was born in 1990 and this brother in 1991 that seems a safe assumption) married into the family; so, I would expect the youngest two siblings, if sisters, to also marry one of the king's brothers (as there are no more princesses to marry).

Wait: how can her brother be born on January 24 of 1991 while the queen was born on June 4 of 1990? That's only 7 1/2 months in-between.

King's brothers who are still unmarried are:

Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck (b.16 July 1984) [son of Queen Mother Dorji Wangmo]
Prince Khamsum Singye Wangchuck (b.6 October 1985) [son of Queen Mother Sangay Choden, only full brother of the bride]
& Prince Ugyen Jigme Wangchuck (b.11 November 1994) [son of Queen Mother Tshering Pem]

Thanks! That makes much more sense. I still wonder whether the youngest two siblings are male or female. Is there any information or will we have to wait and see whether another marriage announcement is forthcoming.

This announcement says that both of the are active 'DeSuups'; what does that refer to?

Translates to guardians of the peace. Here is a little bit of information.

The queen has two brothers and two sisters. Her brother Thinlay Norbu and sister Serchen Doma remain unmarried (well at least to members of the royal family).

It was Thinlay Norbu who married a princess today. So, it seems that the other brother might be the only one not married into the royal family. Serchen Doma is likely considered for one of the remaining princes...

Do you know the name of the other brother and the ages of both brother 2 and Serchen Doma?

Edit: found his name: Jigme Namgyel (so the future king shares his name also with his maternal uncle)

Sorry wrong brother. I could only find a list of names, not their ages. The other brother is Jigme Namgyal.

This article suggests Serchen was in 9th form in 2011. Which would have made her 14-15 I believe in India. So she would be about 23-24 years old.

https://www.telegraphindia.com/indi...war-kalimpong-to-marry-bhutan-king/cid/392166

If they decide to make it 4/5 again, she is of a similar age to Prince Ugyen who is 25, Queen Mother Tshering's youngest. Khamsum and Jigyel are both in their mid 30s.

Given that the queen is 10 years younger than the king, I would guess all three half-brothers would be eligible candidates; but Ugyen Jigme might indeed be a good candidate. After all, today's bride and groom are only 1 1/2 years apart in age.

Does anyone know the literal meaning of the following words:

Druk = Dragon
Gyalpo = king
Gyaltsuen = queen - probably more literally king's wife?)
Gyalsey = crown prince??? More likely seems king's son? As apparently both sons of the king are 'Gyalsey' although sometimes 'Dasho' is used for the youngest
Gyaltshab = king's brother? Given that only his full brother has this title and all half-brothers (including the one who was the heir presumptive) are only 'Dasho'.

Edit: I just read that Gyaltshab means 'king's representative'; he is the king's representative in the 6 eastern districts.
