PRINCE CHARMING
Bhutan's visiting crown prince won hearts with grace, good manners
He comes from a small, remote country in the Himalayas. His name is long and difficult to pronounce, not to mention remember. But HRH Crown Prince Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan, who is to return to his country this morning, has a place in the hearts of many Thais _ particularly women _ who shorten his name to ''Prince Wangchuck''.
The Crown Prince has become the talk of the town after appearing among the royal guests in the live television broadcasts of the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King's accession to the throne.
His admirers say they like him because he is smart, good-looking, polite and gentle. And that's not all.
At the age of 26, the Crown Prince has completed his studies in the foreign service programme at Oxford University, in national defence at the National Defence College in India, and in innovations in governance at the Kennedy School of Governance in the US.
He now has an active role in numerous cultural, educational and economic organisations in Bhutan and is to take over his father's throne in the next two years.
On a three-day private visit to Phuket, the Crown Prince impressed everyone who was granted an audience with him.
''He told us to take things easy, so that his visit would not become a burden on us. He thanked everyone for the warm welcome. He told us this was his first time in Phuket. He admired the province's charm and beauty and said he would come back again,''said Mr Udomsak.

Another royal visitor, HRH Crown Prince Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan, left the island yesterday evening after a three-day stay.
The Prince, a watersports enthusiast, spent his first day in Phuket sailing from the Royal Phuket Marina and then spent two days diving at Koh Maithon.
Ten deaf students from Phuket Special School turned out to see the Prince off at Phuket International Airport. The students had their photo taken with Prince Jigme and also taught him how to sign “I love you”.

Also according to the BBC on 15 December 2006:
Bhutanese king steps down early
King Jigme Singye Wangchuk of Bhutan has abdicated to make way for his son.
The king made his announcement in a royal edict read out late on Thursday at a council of ministers meeting. He had been in power for three decades and announced a year ago that he planned to step down in 2008. He did not say why he was going earlier. It is not clear when Crown Prince Jigme Kesar Namgyal will be crowned.

The state-controlled newspaper Keunsel published the announcement Friday and quoted the royal decree:
"The time has now come for me to hand over my responsibilities to Trongsa Penlop Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, I am confident that a very bright future lies ahead for Bhutan with the leadership of a new king and a democratic system of government that is best suited for our country as enshrined under the Constitution. I have every confidence that there will be unprecedented progress and prosperity for our nation in the reign of our fifth king."
Keunsel
