20th anniversary dinner of UK Bhutan Society - November 25th, 2011

The Bhutan Society of the United Kingdom celebrated it’s 20th anniversary on 25th November 2011. Their Majesties the King and Queen of Bhutan attended the Societies Annual Dinner at the Inner Temple, London.
Besides members of the UK Society, representatives of EU Bhutan Societies were also represented at the Dinner. Henk de Jong and Erica Sluyters, bhutan+partners and Albert van der Schaaf and his wife Paula represented the friends of Bhutan in the Netherlands.
Their Majesties were introduced to the Bhutanese students and to the Bhutan societies’ representatives prior to the dinner. After the dinner the Royal Couple went round and talked to people attending the dinner.
Henk de Jong had the honour and opportunity to inform HM about the 4000 tulip bulbs sent to Bhutan as a gift to the Royal Couple by the World Horticultural Expo Floriade 2012 and the International Flower Bulb Centre with support of the Dutch Embassy in New Delhi and bhutan+partners. He also informed Her Majesty about the request to name one newly cultivated tulip ‘Queen of Bhutan’.
Their majesties are on a private visit to the United Kingdom.
They have spent their honeymoon working with state visits to India and Japan.

Sorry for the pictures so tiny, I haven't found better ones

Bhutan royals trip masks rights issues | The Japan Times Online
The Nov. 15-20 visit by King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema — which included meetings with the Imperial family, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and schoolchildren in disaster-hit Fukushima Prefecture — received widespread media coverage, and their faces regularly appeared on television and in newspapers.
Following their visit, GNH Travel & Services Co. saw inquiries about tours to Bhutan quadruple and the number of hits on its website jump tenfold, company director Masatoshi Honma said.
"After the royal couple's visit, Japanese have become much more familiar with Bhutan," Honma said.
Kaze-Travel Co., which sells travel packages to destinations off the beaten track, such as Mongolia and Tibet, also received a spike in inquiries about Bhutan after the young royal couple's visit.
Even the country's biggest travel agencies, including industry leader JTB Corp., reported a sharp rise in customers asking about tours to the small nation — population 700,000 — sandwiched between China and India.

Activists in Bhutan are hoping their young king – a man known for his fondness for the occasional cigarette – will enter a controversy that has gripped the country and use royal powers to free a number of people sent to jail after being convicted under tough anti-smoking legislation.

The prettiness is not a virtue.
Her Majesty's inner beauty and wisdom is blessing for her kingdom.

I note that it says a monarch must be born to a natural born Bhutanese, so monarchs cannot marry a foreigner or else their children could not succeed to the throne.

Bhutan: The Royal Wedding And Thereafter - Analysis
[...]
The ceremony was carried out in the traditional manner to the last detail by the spiritual head - His Holiness Je Khenpo at the Punakha Dzhong followed by day long celebrations at Thimpu on the 15th.
The festivities that followed were devoid of extravagance and not many VIPs from outside the country were invited. Infact, it was said that the marriage was a “family affair” and rightly so, as the family referred was about those in Bhutan!
The only break from the tradition was the public display of affection by the King towards the Queen on the 15th at Thimpu and this proved to be immensely appreciated by the huge and enthusiastic crowds in the capital.
What one noticed was the genuine affection of the people during the marriage ceremony with people vying with each other to get a glimpse of the royal couple.
This popularity is not a little due to the members of the royalty who have stayed out of controversies and have been immensely popular. Mention should be made of the present King’s father Druk Gyalpo 4 who seemed to have had a benign influence on the people.
It is almost certain that Druk Gyalpo 4 continues to be the guiding factor in the overall progress of the country towards democracy.
