Bhutan's Crown Prince meets PM Lee

The Crown Prince of Bhutan, who is in Singapore for a six-day visit, met Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana on Thursday.
The Crown Prince started his visit on Monday.

He will also meet Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, and have lunch with President S R Nathan at the Istana.

Honorary Degree for Bhutan Crown Prince

Rangsit University of Thailand has announced that the university council has resolved that HRH the Crown Prince of Bhutan be award the Honorary Doctorate degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics on Oct 26, 2006. On this special occasion, the university has composed a special song called “Precious Prince of Hearts” for HRH and the ceremony.:rolleyes:

Bhutanese king steps down early

King Jigme Singye Wangchuk of Bhutan has abdicated to make way for his son.
The king made his announcement in a royal edict read out late on Thursday at a council of ministers meeting. He had been in power for three decades and announced a year ago that he planned to step down in 2008. He did not say why he was going earlier. It is not clear when Crown Prince Jigme Kesar Namgyal will be crowned.

The state-controlled newspaper Keunsel published the announcement Friday and quoted the royal decree:

"The time has now come for me to hand over my responsibilities to Trongsa Penlop Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, I am confident that a very bright future lies ahead for Bhutan with the leadership of a new king and a democratic system of government that is best suited for our country as enshrined under the Constitution. I have every confidence that there will be unprecedented progress and prosperity for our nation in the reign of our fifth king."

I am curious abt the Bhutan Royal Family and Bhutan on the whole. They seems to be so less-known and 'mysterious' until the CP made his appearance in Bangkok. Bhutan itself is so 'remote' in a sense that it is surrounded by the Himalayan mountains. However think it is this natural environment that is the primary source of happiness for its people, which ranked top among the world.

Although i read that Bhutanese women enjoy equal rights with men in every aspect, it is interesting that the ex-King of Bhutan has 4 wives and that they are sisters. Anyone know is this common in Bhutan?

Anyone Bhutanese here or anyone been to Bhutan care to share more insight into this 'mysterious' country?
 
I've read somewhere that it's not common there to have many wifes. But the King married the 4 sisters because of a early conflict? with the family and when he married the sisters, this was the sign for peace between the families.
Correct me if i'm wrong.

June 19: His Majesty the King granted an audience to Her Royal Highness the Princess of Thailand Chulabhorn Mahidol at the Dechencholing palace on Tuesday. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol of Thailand and Her Royal Consort were escorted in traditional chipdrel ceremony to the Dechencholing palace. Upon arrival at the palace Her Royal Highness was received by their royal highnesses the princesses Ashi Chimi Yangzom Wangchuck, Ashi Dechen Yangzom Wangchuck and Ashi Kesang Choden Wangchuck.

Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol of Thailand will also attend an executive seminar on Environmental Toxicology for Safe and Sustainable Development, Pollution Control and Management at the Royal Institute of Management in Semtokha.

After seeing the King of Bhutan during the Visit from Willem-Alexander and Maxima, I must say, the King is a very, very handsome man. He looks very friendly and kind. Hopefully we will see more from him in the future.

I met the Crown Prince in 2004 during a trip I did in Nepal and Bhutan, he is very well educated and has modern concept how to rule his country. Bhutan is a quite poor Nation with strong traditions, he will need some years to change things there...
An example: at that time all people should wear the national dress, so on the plane (the only one of the country!) from Thailand to Bhutan, you saw, some minutes before the landing, all people changing the dress, from the normal jacket to the national one...
The Country itself is a jewel from the point of view of nature.
 
I was wondering when the new king will be crown how I found out thanks to Ephram.
The king is very handsome and I think he will be a great king and his people will continue to adore him now and in the future as well.

You're welcome, Next Star. I believe Royal-watchers around the world can't wait to see the Bhutan coronation in Bhutan. This year 2008 Royals in the world are blessed with two coronations. I assume the Coronation would not be similar to what we saw in Tonga last August in terms of foreign delegations because it says that this is largely local state occassion as Bhutan couldn't afford huge Royal gatherings:

I see from the article that you posted Ephram the king does not want a big cornation.Being his country is not rich he just wants it to be small yet grand which is very nice as well.Thanks again for posting information on the king.

He is the eldest son of the previous King, and has 4 brothers and 5 sisters!

For the financial situation of the Kingdom I can not help you...

Bhutan is not a rich country but the people are humble and they embrace their culture and heritage which I think is wonderful.

Her Royal Highness Ashi Kezang Choden Wangchuck and Dasho Palden Yoeser Thinley were married on November 11. The younger princess of Her Majesty Ashi Tshering Pem Wangchuck, Ashi Kezang Choden Wangchuck is a graduate of Stanford University in the United States and currently the representative of His Majesty in Bumthang, looking after the welfare of the people. Dasho Palden, the son of Lyonchhoen Jigmi Y Thinley and Aum Rinsy Dem, is a graduate of Mahidol University in Thailand.

The sacred ceremony, at Dechenchholing Palace, was followed by a relaxed garden luncheon for the royal family, members of the groom’s family, friends and well-wishers.
