I just watched the funeral on tv, it was very very emotional. Everyone looked devastated. Especially grand duke Jean (of course), so sad to seem him walking alone behind the coffin of his wife. Prince Guillaume (son of Jean and JC) was crying, so were Marie-Astrid and her daughter Marie Christine. King Albert and queen Paola were also very affected. Just like their daughter (and JC's godchild) Astrid of Belgium. I saw prince Filip passing a handkerchief to his wife, princess Mathilde.

Queen Silvia and king Carl Gustav of sweden, behind them: queen Sofia of Spain

It was very emotional indeed! Especially the "Ave Maria" and as they showed a picture of Grand Duchess Josephine Charlotte in the background!:( :(

Here are the first pictures of the funeral procession:

1. Beside the coffin and the ten officers you see the president of parliament, Lucien Weiler and Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker and behind the Minister of Exterior, Jean Asselborn
2. another picture
3. from left to right, Queen Fabiola and King Albert II of Belgium, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, Grand Duke Jean and Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg
4. several royal members in the funeral procession
5. all the grandchildren of J-C, the children of Henri (Felix, Louis, Sebastien and Alexandra; Guillaume was accompanying his parents in the procession), Margaretha (Maria Anunciata, Marie Astrid and Joseph-Emanuel), Jean (Marie Gabrielle, Constantin, Wenceslas, Carl) and Marie Astrid (Marie-Christine, Imre, Christophe, Alexander and Gabriella)
6. first row; Queen Paola and King Albert II of Belgium, GD Henri, GD Maria Teresa and Herd. GD Guillaume; second row Archduchess Marie Astrid and Archduke Carl Christian of Austria, Prince Jean; third row Princess Margaretha and Prince Nikolaus of Liechtenstein, Sibilla and Prince Guillaume of Luxembourg
7. the government members on the left side of the coffin
8. first row; Queen Silvia and King Carl Gustav of Sweden, Queen Margaretha of Denmark; second row, Queen Sofia of Spain, son of Emperor Akihito of Japan and his wife and I see Prince Albert of Monaco behind
9. same persons as in pic 8. but you can see the Queen of the Netherlands behind Carl Gustav of Sweden and the person in white is the Prince of Morroco
10. beside the Prince Moulay Rachid of Morocco is Prince Albert of Monaco and before the son of Emperor Akihito and his wife (the Emperor Akihito and Empress Michito of Japan were very good friends of Josephine-Charlotte and Jean!)

Yes, and he had a very close relationship to his sister Josephine-Charlotte because after the death of their mother Astrid of Sweden in 1935, he was only 1, Baudouin (who died in 1993 was only 5) and Josephine-Charlotte only 7. Josephine-Charlotte felt a little bit like a mother for them.

thanks for the guest list, Hannelore!:)

Hannelore, did you just remove a close-up photo of Queen Margrethe?

I couldn't enlarge the thumbnail, and than when I refreshed the page, the thumbnail were suddenly gone?

It was a beautiful funeral. I thought I had missed it, because the guards were carrying her coffin when I turned on my computer. I noticed how tight Henri was holding M-T's hand. Perhaps, M-T and and J-C were able to grow close after they cleared the air. Jean had tears in his eyes. I don't expect that since most royals don't show emotions in public.

The funeral reminded me of my mother who died in 2001. It's hard to watch one's parents grow old.

Note: The eldest grandchildren of GD Josephine-Charlotte's children, Prince Guillaume (Henri), Princess Marie-Christine (Marie Astrid), Princess Maria Anunciata (Margaretha) and Princess Marie-Gabrielle (Jean) have read in Luxembourgish, German, French and English, a very nice sign to show the cosmopolitan side of the family!

Prince Jean, the twin brother of Princess Margaretha was reading (a little bit a surprise as the TV speaker said, because he was in a certain distance to his family for years, so he had for example given up his rights!)

There were some frictions at the time of his marriage, but they didn't last very long. Jean was on good terms with his parents, sisters and brothers.

His daughter, Marie Gabrielle Nassau also read something.
