From the videos it seems that they are having a great time together.

In the video the king refers to the past and to family ties, but he says it is more important to look ahead to the future. The reporter asked the Queen if this visit was a special occassion which meant that the house diamonds were used. To which the Queen replied: "No, not really" after which she started talking immidiately about the content of the visit, obviously not wanting to discuss such a flimsy/private topic for the camera.

Queen Maxima took her most trusted lady-in-waiting along: Ottoline Antoinette (Lieke) Gaarlandt-van Voorst van Beest. She was attached to Maxima from 2001 onwards and is the only one that stayed after the king's enthronement. She was a teacher French in the past, which comes in handy during this visit perhaps.

Thanks for the info on the LIW, Marengo! it's particularly interesting to learn about the royals' entourage - where would they be without them, a whole team to make them shine and feed them with information and tips... It would come in handy for all of us.

The Dutch nobles have such curious names, often with negative sounding parts in it, like Schimmel or Beest...

Ottoline Antoinette Gaarlandt - Van Voorst van Beest herself is no noble but a patrician: her father Paul van Voorst van Beest was a patrician (enlisted in Nederland's Patriciaat, the "Blue Book").

Her mother jonkvrouw Alexandrine Antoinette van Heurn was a noble (enlisted in Nederland's Adelsboek, the "Red Book"). Van Heurn (Van Huerne) is an ennobled illegitimate branch of the Counts Van Horne.

Queen Máxima has "only" 3 Hofdames, under supervision of the Grootmeesteres as she is no reigning Queen, which requires less assistance from these ladies. (Queen Beatrix had 7 Hofdames).

It has been a very relaxed State Visit and the hosts looked like they were welcoming close friends ,the weather also looked gorgeous!

From the intonation I suspect he is either quoting something or joking. The lady is Lydie Polfert, Luxembourg's foreign minister. Apart from the odd paparazzi the King is not known for 'having a go' at anybody.

Friday evening the Dutch TV showed a program on the State Visit to Luxembourg (as is the custom with every outgoing State Visit). In the Castle of Vianden (one of the King's titles is Count of Vianden) the Dutch Royal House showed some items from their collection.

"Ah, there it is: how it al started, in 1255" the King said. There was a display with the original Act of division between the brothers Walram and Otto of Nassau, dividing the House in two branches.

And indeed, a perchment with two seals. Almost 800 years old. The Grand-Duke wondered where his part of the document was. "Your copy went lost" said the King "so we take all yours back because we do have the document!" he joked, to hilarity of the Grand-Duke.

Queen Máxima did not want to answer on questions about the diadem with the House Diamonds. Did she choose these because of the two Houses of the same dynasty? I am not sure id she refused because the question was impertinent or that she was not aware of that Luxembourg has another branch of the same House. Her spouse, a historian, probably will have whispered to her: use the diadem with the House diamonds.

But it is interesting that the diadem was never used before at a dutch luxemburgian State Visit. Also not by Queen Julian who used it quiet often.

According to Blauw Bloed the scions of Otto (Willem-Alexander) and Walram (Henri) used the exhibition at Burg Vianden for a flash-course "History of the House Nassau" to their interested spouses.

The fact that the Orange-Nassaus got the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg after the Congress of Vienna in 1815 was mainly based on their widespread territories as Counts of Vianden.

The Orange-Nassaus were Counts of Vianden. But when King/Grand-Duke Willem III died in 1890, not his daughter Princess Wilhelmina but the head of the other Nassau branch became Grand-Duke of Luxembourg and Count of Vianden.

It seems that it is agreed that bot the Grand-Duke as well the King keep using the title Count of Vianden in the so-called intitulé (the Etc. Etc. Etc. in the titulature).
