On December 14th, Princess Nobuko gave a special lecture on health and volunteer activities in Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture. She spoke about her experiences suffering from menopause, women's health issues, children's dietary needs, social contribution activities, and the importance of communication.

Singer and director of NPO Japan International Children's Society, Teruko Ohba, helped setup the lecture. Ms. Ohba participated in the same youth international exchange program as the late Prince Tomohito and is also Princess Nobuko's friend. 140 people attended the lecture; proceeds will be donated to a service organization connected with Princess Nobuko.

On November 4th, Princess Akiko attended the 100th anniversary celebration of Kokushikan University at the Hotel New Otani in Chiyoda, Tokyo. More than 1,000 people attended the ceremony including faculty, student representatives, graduates, affiliated schools, and stakeholders.

On December 11th, Princess Akiko conducted a participatory lecture with 20 students at Kanazawa University on the theme of “Expanding values” before an audience of 180 students. Princess Akiko met with President Koetsu Yamazaki about the necessity of globalization of Japanese youth before the lecture.

On January 12th, IHA announced Princess Akiko is president of Mikasa Memorial Foundation since March 7 of last year. The foundation supports Middle Eastern culture research.

Makiko Sen, daughter of ex-Mikasa princess Masako and Soshitsu Sen, married in 2017.

The engagement ceremony of Makiko Sen and Munehiro Sakata was celebrated on February 19, 2017. Mr. Sakata is 35 years old, born in Kyoto, and works as an orthopedic surgeon and clinical researcher at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, University Hospital. Former Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda served as nakōdo (仲人 matchmaker) for the two families.

The couple married on October 7th at Heian Shrine in Kyoto with the reception at the Westin Miyako Kyoto Hotel. Guests included her grandmother Princess Yuriko, aunt Princess Hisako, and cousins Princesses Akiko, Tsuguko, Ayako, and Noriko Senge.

On March 3rd, Princess Nobuko attended a "Women's Health and Work-Life Balance" forum and awards ceremony, sponsored by Women's Health and Menopause Association. She discussed her health issues began in 2004 with gastric ulcers and menopausal disorder. Later, she was repeatedly hospitalized for asthma. The princess' poor health kept her from official duties for many years and she lived apart from her husband. Princess Nobuko visited victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2013 and afterwards gradually increased her duties. She learned much about the association, especially to support those affected by disaster, and has been a women's health counselor herself for 7 years. She volunteers, taking phone calls and became honorary president of the association 5 years ago.

Princesses Nobuko and Akiko travelled to Hokkaido Prefecture for the 89th International Miyasma Ski Games in Sapporo last week. Nobuko visited March 8-13th; Akiko visited March 8-12th.

Princess Nobuko returned to Tokyo briefly on the 10th to attend the Nursing School of the Jikei's Heisei 29 graduation ceremony. [Asahi's Imperial schedule]

On February 25th, Princess Akiko attended a cultural workshop at Konpira Shrine (aka Kotohira-gū) in Kotohira, Kagawa Prefecture. About 30 children enjoyed making traditional confectionery.

On April 1st, the IHA announced Princess Akiko was appointed a visiting professor at Kokushikan University’s Graduate School of Humanities. She will give lectures on Japanese culture and art history several times a year. Kokushikan University had academic exchanges with Prince Mikasa; Princess Akiko attended Kokushikan University’s 100th anniversary ceremony last November.

She was in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture April 27-28th for this lecture on the Imperial family's lifestyle, New Year activities, food culture, etc. Princess Akiko is honorary executive chairman of the exhibition which features about 170 pieces of art, clothing, and furnishings from the Meiji era court.

The IHA announced Princess Yuriko will be admitted to St. Luke's International Hospital May 8-9 to exchange her pacemaker. The approximately 1 hour operation is scheduled for the 8th. She was diagnosed with bradyarrhythmia in May 1999 and has exchanged pacemakers in 2005 and 2011.

Princess Akiko will visit the United States privately June 11-21. Most of the trip is work as Gakushuin University researcher. However, she'll attend a US-Japan arts and culture symposium at the Detroit Institute of Arts in Detroit, Michigan on June 12th.

On May 20th, Princess Akiko participated in a rice workshop in Niigata Prefecture with 30 students from Tokyo's Kokugakuin University. Her cultural organization Shinyusha hosted the workshop where students planted rice for 2 hours, spoke to farmers, and test drove the agricultural machines. Cutting and harvesting are scheduled for September to October; some of the rice will be dedicated to a shrine.

Princess Nobuko visits Gifu Prefecture May 28-29th. On the 28th, she visited Ena city's Iwamura-cho where its Edo period main street is preserved and is the location for TV drama series "Half Blue." She also toured an Edo period dye shop, now a museum, for details on indigo dyeing.

Tomorrow, Princess Nobuko will visit the Flower Festival Commemorative Park in Kani and Aerospace Museum in Kakamigahara.

Princess Mako has Japan Art Crafts Association. Prince Akishino has Japan Forestry Association and Agricultural Society of Japan. Prince Katsura's other patronages should be vacant.
