On April 23rd, Princess Akiko attended the spring festival at Yasukuni Shrine.

fyi - Emperor Showa (Hirohito) and Emperor Akihito no longer visit Yasukuni Shrine after convicted Class A war criminals were enshrined in 1978. I don't expect soon-to-be Emperor Naruhito or Crown Prince Akishino to visit either. This task seems assigned to the Mikasa or Takamado members.

On May 10th, the IHA announced Princess Akiko has been appointed honorary president of the Japan Rugby Football Union. The position has been vacant since her father Prince Tomohito's passing in June 2012. The organization was founded as the Japan Rugby Football League in 1915.

Princess Akiko's cultural organization Shinyusha redesigned their website!

https://shinyusha.or.jp

Shinyusha also has a mascot, Yukihime-chan and sticker for Japan's texting app LINE

Yuki = snow, Princess Akiko's personal emblem
hime = usually translated as "princess" although another translation is a young lady of higher birth
chan = common honorific for children, girls, and things cute

Very sweet, and a nice medium between traditional and fashionable. I love the reference to Princess Akiko's emblem.

By the way, when did she found Shinyusha and launch its website? I wonder if the redesign indicates that Akiko intends to maintain her role there in the long term, potentially even after marriage.

I wonder why there was a 7-year gap. Is the honorary presidency an acknowledgement of the charitable work she has done over the last few years, perhaps?

Shinyusha was founded on April 1, 2012 (Heisei 24) according to its About page: 平成2 4 年4月1日 (Google got better translating the era format. It's often incorrect.)

I wonder about the 7-year gap too. Maybe the IHA or Mikasa family needed time to figure out who was going to take the patronage of Japan Rugby Football Union.

On February 1st, Princess Yoko visited the city hall of Uki, Kumamoto Prefecture to introduce "Comuoon" a communication support system with NPO Japan Universal Sound Design Association.

On February 2nd, Princess Yoko presented at a Hearing seminar in Kagoshima, Kagoshima Prefecture. She spoke about her own hearing loss and discussed activities to create a society where people with disabilities are accepted. She visited Shinichiro Nakaishi privately to learn about his company's "Comuoon" communication support system.

Princess Yoko's hearing impairment could be the reason she doesn't attend general public greetings. The crowds are noisy despite the royals standing in a glass enclosure.

Thanks, Prisma! I wonder how it will be handled if and when she marries given that it is her own foundation but the nature of the work it does has the appearance of connection to her role as a princess. Do you know whether there is any precedent?

Kudos to her for speaking about her own disability! For public greetings, wouldn't the noise be less disturbing to a person who is hard of hearing than one who has perfect hearing?

Many people with hearing aids turn them off when in noisy settings because the aids can't handle and filter it with the result that it's, as I've been told, like sitting with your ear against a loudspeaker.

I wonder what is contained in those "surprising" perceptions. Are foreigners perhaps only aware of a limited selection of traditional Japanese art forms?

I didn't know Princess Yuriko had a living older sister. One hopes having a close family member to rely on assisted her in coping with the loss of her three sons and more recently her husband.
